I've always liked stax decks, and I've always felt the compulsion to try to build commanders that way for that reason. Most commanders aren't suited to the archetype, and fall short in effectively controlling the board.

Prosper, Tome-Bound is a commander who is well suited to playing a staxy build. I haven't seen many stax lists for Prosper, so I decided to give it a go. Both of Prosper's effects can help break parity: the first gives you card advantage without having to worry about hand size, and the second gives you both mana advantage and a larger number of permanents.

For the first effect, you can play around cards like Knowledge Pool and Omen Machine, allowing you to have significantly better card advantage and agency over your plays than your opponents. You also don't have to worry about cards like Sire Of Insanity as much, since this effect gets around having to cast cards from your hand.

Treasures are really useful for generating mana, and generating a lot of them means that you don't rely on your land as much as your opponents. This allows for includes like Tainted AEther, Storm Cauldron, and Death Cloud. Having more treasure also equals having more permanents, which helps break parity with Smokestack and Descent into Madness.

I've also put in some easy includes like card:Bloodmoon, Magus of the Moon, Painful Quandary and No Mercy. Dauthi Voidwalker and Draugr Necromancer also provide obligatory graveyard hate.

Beyond the inherent benefit of Prosper's abilities in breaking parity, there are a few other ways in the deck to keep ahead of other players. Academy Manufactor is an incredible include when considering stax effects that make players sacrifice permanents. Etali, Primal Storm can help immensely in maintaining a lead on other players with an Omen Machine or Sire Of Insanity in play. Rise of the Dread Marn is very mana efficient and can win the game after a well timed Death Cloud or Toxic Deluge.

The main wincon in the deck is pretty cheesy: a massive Torment of Hailfire. It's actually especially impactive in this deck, since one of its primary goals is reducing your opponents' number of permanents. Bloodchief Ascension can also be a viable wincon. A lot of permanents will be going to your opponents' graveyards; once it's triggered, Bloodchief Ascension will quickly drain your enemies' life totals, which will make it all the easier to use a Death Cloud or Torment of Hailfire to finish out the game. card:Angrath, the Flamechained can also drain enemies with his +1 and potentially hit for lethal with his ultimate.

This deck still a WIP and needs more testing and work. Any thoughts that the community can provide are greatly appreciated. A few points may be important in understanding my ideas behind making this deck.

  1. I wanted to make a stax deck that wasn't completely oppressive, but will still keep other players in check and win a few games. That being said, there may need to be a few more stax pieces for the deck to be effective. I'm hesitant to add more until I've had more time for testing.

  2. Most of the cards in this deck I already had lying around, except for the new ones, of course. I don't want to spend a ton on this deck, but there are a few things that I'm planning to get to improve the deck: Uba Mask, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Birgi, God of Storytelling  , Chandra, Torch of Defiance and card:Stollen Strategy.
