Jenara, the Sudden Threat

Commander / EDH GWU (Bant)

I bought someone's 25,000-ish card collection for $80 a bunch of years ago and this was the first deck I built from it. It was decidedly average, and as I've recently gotten back into the game after a few years of not playing, I've been making changes to this deck with more recent and better-suited cards to its playstyle. It does still need work.

Jenara is the key wincon here. There are several cards that play with 1/1 counters, and using those to sneak her up to 1-shot kill levels is the main focus. In my experience so far, players tend to ignore Jenara even if she's brought out early, as she doesn't appear to be much of a threat at first. Flying 3/3 with a seemingly underwhelming ability. Build up mana, get some of the 1/1 counter-boosting cards out (Increasing Savagery, Hydra's Growth, the Enchantments that deal with counters, etc), then pump her and 1-shot people with Commander Damage. She can build up scary fast, especially if you get Vorel into play. With the right card combination in hand and the mana to play it, she goes from a non-threat to a big problem before the opponents have a chance to realize what's happening.

Things to watch out for are having her sent back to hand/command zone (losing all of those shiny counters in the process unless The Ozolith is in play), or having someone take control of her. Hopefully you'll keep a counterspell or two handy. Even if not, later game, she builds back up quickly as long as you can get mana. There's an Infinite Mana combo (Deadeye Navigator / Peregrine Drake) to make her infinite power/toughness and one-shot enemies that can't defend flying. Slap some of that protection on her once you're ready for the big pumpage (Gift of Immortality is stellar here) and go big mode.

The largest problems I've found playing this (since it's my only decent deck at the moment, I play it almost every time): -If you play with the same group regularly, once they know what the main goal is, they're not likely to let it happen, and she's likely to be targeted for removal. Board wipes are also basically death. -I have far too many games where I just don't have enough mana. It needs more ramp. -It's often at the mercy of what cards you draw. It needs more ability to go search for specific cards.

I'm updating this deck still as I find new cards for it.
