Moved around, made room for bloodrage brawler. I think i took them out since I didn't like the discard emphasis the original had, but it's really a good creature.

Oregon Changes

rco, 8 years ago

We settled on:

Skull Rend still looks sweet, and the haste on Blazing Specter is nice. But Hypnotic Sphinx doesn't have to deal combat damage, which is huge, and Painful Quandary looks like much more value for 5 mana.

**RESULT : 2-2-0** ------------------------------------------------------------------- **ROUND 1**: UW Control with Emrakul, the Promised End // 2-1 **ROUND 2**: Eldrazi Tron // 0-2 **ROUND 3**: RG Ponza // 2-0 **ROUND 4**: RG Valakut // 0-2 ------------------------------------------------------------------- **META**: My two losts were against two of our worst matchups. The meta at this LGS looks pretty competitive: Grixis Twinless Twin (?), 2 Abzan Company, 2 Eldrazi Tron, Grixis Control, Grixis Death's Shadow, 2 Scapeshift, UW Spirit, Elves, Abzan Eldrazi, Burn, Zoo, 2 UW Control, Storm and Skred Red. I really hate losing against Scapeshift and Eldrazi Tron, I don't know if it's better to just accept that it's a bad matchup or put more hate specifically against it.

Consistency Changes

Hey everyone!

I've been really happy with the recent changes I've been making to the deck, especially the lowered land count. However, there are a few changes that I think will serve to make the deck even better.

-1 Command Beacon

+1 Forest

A seemingly small and simple, yet incredibly crucial change. Nykthos, Deserted Temple, Ancient Tomb, and Strip Mine are the only other colorless lands in the deck, and are each crucial to the deck's operation. Running Beacon over a Forest therefore ups the odds of drawing unplayable opening hands by a relatively large amount. That risk is not worth the potential small benefit.

-1 Fauna Shaman

+1 Regrowth

This deck is not particularly a Survival of the Fittest deck; it runs Survival because the card is insane, but Fauna is not Survival. In addition to being slow and only usable once/turn, Fauna is one of the few creatures that is a removal magnet in a deck that largely lacks such creatures.

On the other hand, this deck is sorely lacking Regrowth effects, especially when it comes to recurring it's powerful lands. Regrowth brings back both powerful mana sources and combo pieces, making it a perfect addition.

-1 Bane of Progress

+1 Greenwarden of Murasa

Greenwarden? You're probably asking yourself what a "casual" 6-drop Eternal Witness is doing in a competitive deck. If you read above, this deck lacks ways to recur its powerful cards. Greenwarden provides a second such way, is a large blocker, and is most importantly tutorable by our large selection of creature tutors. The only other tutorable Regrowth effect we can run is Skullwinder. Skullwinder is a card I used to run, but honestly is often disappointing in how it forces you to enable your opponents (even at large tables). Greenwarden's death trigger also combos with Greater Good and Natural Order, and provides a small amount of Wrath deterrence.

Bane, in comparison, while a powerful card, is removal for a cardtype our deck is adept at dealing with, between Freya, Rec Sage, and the recent Manglehorn, backed up by several creature tutors. In addition it's clunky in that it destroys our own powerful enchantments while being slow and clunky. In the right meta this card can be very powerful, but in general this is not the card we want.

(Upon HOU release)

-1 Ant Queen

+1 Ramunap Excavator

You may be wondering why we're suddenly adding a Crucible effect to our deck, despite not running Crucible before. The reason for this is simple; like Greenwarden, Excavator is a card that we can Tutor for, unlike Crucible of Worlds. It also blocks and counts towards Freya's ult, while being a decent creature.

Freya is by no means a "Crucible deck." However, we run a low land count with a large amount of fetches, allowing Excavator to enable "infinite" land drops, especially in combination with Exploration, Azusa, and Oracle. Additionally (and more importantly), Excavator is an important way of recurring Cradle, Nykthos, and Deserted Temple; 3 of the most powerful cards in our deck. Finally, there are powerful interactions between extra land drops, Excavator, and the graveyard, potentially allowing us to abuse these lands multiple times.

This is the latest round of additions and modifications. Please let me know your thoughts and comments, as always!

Primer is LIVE!!! 66 Votes and Climbing!

VexenX, 8 years ago

The Primer is now up!!! I worked very hard to get this to all of you! Please let me know if you have any suggestions, or if there is anything you would like me to add! Now, for the changes:

Better land with no drawback.

I like how this mill ability is more focused on what I bring to the table, as well as actives off The Scarab God’s ability!

The Whip will almost never be used for its activated ability, and I don’t think the Lifelink is enough to keep it in here. The mana fixing the Lantern proves makes it one of the best mana rocks in Commander.

After thinking about it, this seems like a pretty obvious change. I don’t normally want to see a boardwipe, but one that focuses on non-zombies seems really good. Sure, I might lose The Scarab God from time to time, but I imagine it will be worth it (or I just tutor for Nim Deathmantle!)

As I wrote the Primer, I noticed that this deck really had PLENTY of reanimation in it, so cutting one does not hurt. Haze seems amazing with The Scarab God, Endless Ranks of the Dead, and Phyrexian Arena, and a little scary with Graveborn Muse, lol.

Playtesting 1 Results

KuraiU, 8 years ago

I got a chance to playtest the deck with a couple of friends and I immediately noticed that you were more likely to draw late game threats and the like without ever seeing more than 3 lands, that has changed

Herald of Anafenza, Slayer of the Wicked, and Strength of Arms have all been taken out and been replaced by two more forests and a plains. Hopefully this increases the land draw rate of the deck

Zelda_MTG, 8 years ago

**Found out after playtesting that giving my opponents lands/mana and trying to use the "pay X" pillowfort cards doesn't work. Should have known. Freed up 6 slots!**

4/4's , WHY?

RedBuilder11, 8 years ago

Playtested a bit more. Lost a lot to Lathnu Hellion and Walking Ballista. The Hellion just beat me down and I could not manage to find a Fatal Push at all, let alone with revolt. Ballista got huge, and I yet again did not find a Fatal Push. Yahenni's Expertise Helped, but I need some tech against those 4/4's. Excited for the possibility of Bontu's Last Reckoning.

going to take out Lotus Petal and Phantasmal Image for Wharf Infiltrator and Mystic Remora.

The only thing image wants to really copy in here is witness so I think its a little narrow.

Petal isn't reusable and I've been looking for a slot to try wharf infiltrator in again.

Remora can be so huge. I just haven't tried it yet.

Looks matter

I've updated the description and added some new cards. Most notably, I've moved to the Protean Hulk reanimator combo. This is generally more effective and has fewer moving parts. Check it out!

MAJOR UPDATES: Stormageddon > Storm Amalgam

Almost_A_Wizard, 8 years ago

The deck has went through substantial changes, we've shifted into a mixture of various storm decks from Modern, Legacy and Vintage. The move added more resiliency and combo lines to allow for a varied style of play. Our curve lowered also to allow for a better average yield from Ad Nauseam.

Additional Mini Update Tinder Wall and Izzet Charm out for Mystic Remora and Collective Brutality. While the Charm is eh as it is, it has proved useful in past games, but the discard and possible removal from Brutality while being less color intensive gets the spot. Remora has been in and out of this deck a dozen times. It usually puts in a lot of work, and the wall has been disappointing to say the least, so we'll try the fish again.

Replaced Prison Term with Darksteel Mutation, a strict upgrade. This is likely the final version, although easily converted to a Cheerios build, or upgraded with the Swords/Jitte cards if budget permits.

Never actually mentioned it but with amonkhet they changed the rules and closed this loophole. Deck no longer works.

update

bustinedup, 8 years ago

played for the first time. removed coastal piracy from the list. the card isn't available locally, and i'm not ready to make an order. i had removed sword of the animist for thought vessel, but i added sword back to fill in for coastal piracy. it was quite effective. any suggestions would be welcome.

Update #1

dzapf2008, 8 years ago

Updated the deck by maximizing as many cards as I can. Maxed out Rakdos Cackler, Rakdos Shred-Freak, Lightning Bolt, Demigod of Revenge, Faithless Looting, Spike Jester, and Vexing Devil. I also added 2 of each of Rakdos, Lord of Riots, and Exava, Rakdos Blood Witch. I still need to update it further when I receive cards in the mail. Any suggestions are appreciated.
