Being legendary means a few things. Foremost on people's minds might be that it makes a critter eligible for commander status, but the real rules text at the core of legendary status: you can only have one of 'em! Flavour-wise it makes sense - this is an individual we're talking about here - but it also helps balance some effects that would get out of hand if they existed in multiples. Plenty of legends have abilities that would be insane if you could have a few copies of them in play (Elesh Norn, Miirym, Grand Arbiter Augustin IV...) but why let that hold you back? With the help of a little busted mechanic, you can pile up all the copies of a legend you like!

The culprit, of course, is the dread pirate Mutate. It's simple: mutate any old mutant onto your legend of choice, making sure to put the creature with mutate on top. In this case, you now have a Dreamtail Heron that counts as your commander and has your commander's text box. Well, seeing as Dreamtail Hedron isn't legendary (no matter how many nice abilities it has) you're now free to Clone it as much as you like, filling the board with mini-legends.

In this case, we opted for the commander classic Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind. Regardless of whatever tiny body mutate may give him, those lovely abilities both stack nicely for each copy you have, both ensuring you draw into plenty more clones to keep the ball rolling as well as providing a way to blow your opponent(s) to pieces! A handful of wheel effects serve as easy finishers, not to mention the ol' reliables Curiosity and Ophidian Eye if all else fails.

There are lots of cool options for potential legends that are meaner by the dozen. With the concession that you basically need blue, since that's where 99% of clones exist, here were the other commanders I thought had potential to be mutated and cloned like mad.

Koma, Cosmos Serpent

Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm

Aesi, Tyrant of Gyre Strait

Animar, Soul of Elements

Be'Lakor, the Dark Master

Svyelun of Sea and Sky

The Locust God

Silumgar, the Drifting Death
