Another one of my $30 budget decks. This one is five colours, which is especially tricky when working on a budget.

I have been wanting to build a Reaper King deck for a while now. What I love most about the card is that he synergizes around what is perhaps the jankiest and least supported creature type in Magic's history: scarecrows.

There are many ways to build a Reaper King deck, and the most powerful ones don't really remain true to the scarecrow theme. Given that most scarecrows are extremely cheaply priced, I think a scarecrow tribal EDH deck is perfect for a budget deck. So aside from the mana base, deck construction wasn't that tricky.

Speaking of the mana base, I decided to make blue and green our primary two colours and leave the other three as splash colours. We need a lot of ramp and colour fixing, so we are running the cheap ramp staples: Rampant Growth, Farseek, Cultivate, Explosive Vegetation, and Shard Convergence. We are also running the newly printed basic landcycling cards that are extremely good outside of their fixing utility: Ancient Excavation, and Sylvan Reclamation. We also have a lot of mana rocks in Commander's Sphere, Darksteel Ingot, Manalith and Fellwar Stone.

Although this is a five colour deck, most of the spells we will be casting only cost generic mana. This gives us a great opportunity to run lands like the Panoramas--they can tap for colourless mana right away, and we don't need to worry about cracking them until necessary.

Given all of this mana fixing we have, our plan is to ramp into our general, holding off our scarecrow spells until he is in play. Then we go to town.

Some tech:

• Flicker effects: Eerie Interlude, Ghostly Flicker, Deadeye Navigator and Mistmeadow Witch. Eerie Interlude can protect against wrath effects, and Mistmeadow Witch can flicker an opponent's creature to avoid taking damage.

• Copy effects: Clone, Evil Twin, Cackling Counterpart and Stolen Identity. We can flicker the first two, while Cackling can be flashed back for another use. We can get many uses out of Stolen Identity since it can be ciphered.

• Flameshadow Conjuring is really good with ETB effects. A ton of value with Reaper King out.

• Most of our spells are artifact creatures, so we have Etherium Sculptor and Foundry Inspector to give us a discount. Chief Engineer can turn our crappier scarecrows into mana producers to ramp even further!

• Harvest Hand   can turn into an equipment, which is cool. Note that our shapeshifters also count as humans, so equipping one with the scythe can give it menace!

• Rattleblaze Scarecrow , Watchwing Scarecrow , and Wingrattle Scarecrow get a lot better when Reaper King is out in play. Persist is a pretty powerful ability when Reaper King is out.

• Jawbone Skulkin , Hoof Skulkin , Shell Skulkin , and Antler Skulkin all support our commander, with Shell and Antler Skulkin granting the more relevant abilities shroud and persist.

• Some of our scarecrows help out with mana fixing! Scuttlemutt and Pili-Pala!

• We have some recursion in Sharuum the Hegemon and Trading Post. We can flicker Sharuum for added value.

• The champion changelings are pretty good (Changeling Berserker, Changeling Hero and Changeling Titan), since when they die we get another ETB from a scarecrow.

• We get our card draw from Soul of the Harvest, Harvester of Souls, Padeem, Consul of Innovation, and Trading Post.

• This deck attracts a lot of hate. Pillow fort cards are pretty expensive outside of Windborn Muse, but we'll run what we can!

• Cards to cast with Bring to Light: Padeem, Consul of Innovation, Windborn Muse, Explosive Vegetation, Sylvan Reclamation, Mirror Entity.
