Indomitable Indominus

Commander / EDH* BUG (Sultai)

Rivel

Maybeboard

After gaining more deck-building experience, I have decided to rebuild my indominus deck. The goal is still to create a keyword soup monster and win through combat damage, but this time the deck shall be faster, more robust, and consistent.

The deck has seen improvements across the board.

  • The mana base has been completely improved in every way.
  • I have a much more robust interaction package. I have better counterspells, and my targeted removal has more than doubled.
  • I have doubled the amount of card draw.
  • My tutor package upgraded to include several powerful low cmc classics like worldy and vampiric.

I did have to make a few cuts to the number of keyword cards (though I did properly balance the remaining ones), removed a gy hate piece, and a gy recur piece. And one less board wipe (though it was a very inefficient wipe). But those sacrifices are more than worth it! Additionally, with how good my mana base is now, I could look into cutting a few lands to add some more fun stuff. Playtesting is required.

Notes:

Named lands that can be fetched:

  • Watery Grave (island swamp)
  • Overgrown Tomb (forest swamp)
  • breeding pool (forest island)

Long ramble ahead (not important, just my random thoughts): While the deck does need interaction, it can feel bad in some situations where I am staring at a Nature's Claim just sitting in my hand when I am missing the last protection keyword needed to cast my commander with... Having cards in the deck that don't synergize with my gameplan feels bad.

I would be so happy if there were creatures that could destroy a type of perm on etb while also having a hexproof or a indestructible keyword, I'm just looking for synergistic removal. Kinda like how Sythis, Harvest's Hand has Sheltered by Ghosts. She gets to remove a threat, while advancing her gameplan and getting rewarded with protection! And its just not there, enchantress effects can have synergy in their ramp, their draw, their removal, their tutors, everything. Whereas with indom I can only find a couple keyword pieces that ramp, a couple keyword pieces that can draw... Its unfair. I want more synergy for my beautiful chompin dino!

Since I do not want to cut back on my interaction due to the existence of cards like Grave Pact which shut this deck down, I will either need to find cards to cut for more keyword support or just accept the limitations of this strategy.

4/24/2025: Found out about this ruling: 702.11g “Hexproof from each [characteristic]” is shorthand for “hexproof from [quality A],” “hexproof from [quality B],” and so on for each possible quality the listed characteristic could have; it behaves as multiple separate hexproof abilities. Breaker of Creation This means indom would get 5 separate hexproof counters, one for each color. 5 card draw off of one creature is insane value! Plus, it is a great re animator target. Also Volatile Stormdrake isn't bad, it can be hard casted for cheap as targeted removal (and I neeeed removal that has synergy with the decks theme!!) or it can be 2 types of hexproof counters aka 2 cards drawn!

702.1c An effect may state that “the same is true for” a list of keyword abilities or similar. If one of those keyword abilities has variants or variables and the effect grants that keyword or counters of that keyword to one or more objects and/or players, it grants each appropriate variant and variable of that keyword.
