General Deck Idea

A Golgari selfmill deck with a +1/+1 counter theme. I really did an efford to find cards that work well with this gameplan. So some of them are not featured on EDHREC when looking up Grist, the Hunger Tide. Curious if there are any which I overlooked. Allthough the deck is filled with some expensive stuff this is one of my more casual decks to play with.

Selfmill

Use Grist, the Hunger Tide first ability to mill cards make Insect tokens. And Hermit Druid and Mesmeric Orb for more selfmill to get creatures in the graveyard. Zask, Skittering Swarmlord and Out of the Tombs also mill cards. Tribute to the World Tree and Ohran Frostfang give the deck extra draw power. With cards like Forever Young and Scroll Rack manipulate the top of the Library.

+1/+1 Counters

Cards like Metallic Mimic let your Insects ETB with an extra +1/+1 counter. Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest can also give +1/+1 counters with sac outlets like Nantuko Husk. Grist, the Hunger Tide second ability also sacs. Iridescent Hornbeetle triggers on counters for more Insects. It is possible to make many big Insects in this way. One of the key cards is Bloodspore Thrinax, for +1/+1 counters and Sacrifice in one creature.

Graveyard Retrieval

Three creatures can bring back cards from the Graveyard: Spring-Leaf Avenger, Zask, Skittering Swarmlord and Graveshifter. The enchantment Out of the Tombs does the same and can be used multiple times and helps with Milling also. Artifacts like Bow of Nylea and Ghost Lantern return cards from the Graveyard and also work with +1/+1 counter theme. Volrath's Stronghold is super, because it only takes a landslot.

Fun Combo

Try to mill and draw until Vigor is the last card in the Library. With Maskwood Nexus and Grist, the Hunger Tide on the battlefield. Activate Grist, the Hunger Tide first ability to mill Vigor who now is an Insect. Reshuffle Vigor back in Library. Grist, the Hunger Tide mills again, and again ending the game in a draw. Fun way to end a game!
