EDH - Jenara's Enchantress

Commander / EDH

Caeruleus

The deck takes the archetype of "good stuff" and places it firmly within an enchantress shall. The deck doesn't have a definite game plan, which can make it enjoyable to play as the lines of play tend to vary from game to game.

The deck attempts to drag the game out while slowly generating card advantage and board presence. The deck plays like any other enchantress shell, you drop early enchantments to generate utility (eg. Exploration), and then play an enchantress (eg Argothian Enchantress), and then plays out a string of enchantments, which just by sheer volume of distruption start to choke out opposing strategies. There are a few key plays in the deck that mightn't so intuitive:

  • Wargate: Almost exclusively played for X= to retrieve Serra's Sanctum.
  • Enchanted Evening: Almost always the tutor target mid-game onwards for Enlightened Tutor et al.; This card importantly turns lands into enchantments. This has two outcomes. (1) your opponents cannot sweep enchantments without wiping out their entire board and Armageddoning themselves, providing a good disincentive to enchantment sweeps. (2) It turns Opalescence into a lockdown card; making all lands 0/0, and making them instantly disappear to state based effects.

  • Armageddon: The deck will often be able to recover very quickly from a state of having no lands because of the card advantage it can generate. This card allows you to shut players out / buy time.

  • Minamo, School at Water's Edge: Importantly, untaps Serra's Sanctum

Lastly, you might be curious as to why Jenara, Asura of War is the Commander of the deck, considering these sorts of grindy decks more often play Derevi. The answer is two fold: (1) Having Derevi as your commander tends to signal that you're playing some kind of oppressive deck. You do not need to draw attention to the oppressive properties of your deck. (2) Jenara is a fantastic mana sink for the inordinate white mana generated off Serra's Sanctum; and also counters layer on top of Humility so you can keep the biggest threat on board, when you need to shut out creatures / commanders with Humility.

I've piloted this deck for 6 years now, and its one of the decks I keep coming back to as an enjoyable mix of control and combo/synergy.
