Urza

"Centuries ago, one man’s vengeance plunged the world into ice and darkness."

Urza, Lord High Artificer is an ingenious artificer and wizard whose thirst for vengeance is second only to his obsessive nature.

No combos. No stax. This is an eggs deck. Eggs are cheap (usually 1 mana) artifacts that draw a card and can be sacrificed (cracked). Named after the Darkwater Egg cycle.

Here, low cost artifacts act as ramp and draw to quickly find The Millennium Calendar, protect it, and win the game.

Budget: $200
Typical Turn Win: 8-10

  1. Play artifacts.
  2. Play Urza, Lord High Artificer. Not only does he ramp, but his ability to tap artifacts will add counters to The Millennium Calendar every upkeep.
  3. Play a win condition like The Millennium Calendar or Mirrodin Besieged.
  4. Play an untap card like Voltaic Key or a doubler like Rings of Brighthearth and double counters on The Millennium Calendar multiple times per turn.
  5. Defend the win condition with protection spells like Spellskite, Welding Jar, and Counterspellfoil.

Plan A: The Clock
The primary win condition in this deck is The Millennium Calendar. 1000 counters can seem like a high number to reach but with no counter-doubling help from other cards, it can double counters on itself and reach 1000 in eight turns.

Instead of using proliferate effects which can only add one counter at a time, this deck is focused on untap effects like Manifold Key and doubling effects like Rings of Brighthearth to win in 4 turns or less after entering the battlefield.

  1. Find and play The Millennium Calendar as soon as possible.
  2. Play cards that untap it so you can activate its counter-doubling ability twice a turn or more.
  3. Defend it with protection spells until it has 1000 counters and win.

Plan B: The Graveyard
The backup win condition is Mirrodin Besieged in case our artifacts have all ended up in the graveyard.

Plan C: The Construct
You can also knock out opponents with combat damage if Urza's construct token goes unanswered. This is less than a primary plan and more a last resort.

  • You enjoy playing your commander in every game.
  • You like unconventional win conditions.
  • You don't mind being the threat at the table.

  • You do not want to play your commander in every game.
  • Razor's edge control strategies like sticking a win condition and protecting it are not your style.
  • You hate artifacts.
