Replaced 3 swamps with, Hostile Hostel, Cabal Coffers, and Field of ruin. Reasoning for last 2 is obvious, hostel damages and activates konrad. Loxodon Warhammer ---> Mask of Griselbrand. Same Cmc for lifelink, sidegrade of trample for flying, but has card draw to get to better wincons. Cling to dust ---> Vile Entomber. Don't need graveyard hate. drawing is nice off of cling, but it's much nicer to just grab what i want. Gift of doom ----> Gate to phyrexia... i bought the gate and needed a place to put it. Lets black get rid of artifact graveyard hate?
Just had a very hilarious win...

My opponent is playing a competitive The Ur-Dragon deck, and I'm playing this one. On my opponent's board is Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund amongst a horde of other Dragons. I cast and resolve Oko, Thief of Crowns, then turn Karrthus into an Elk. On my next turn (after playing defensively), I give my opponent a Gray Merchant of Asphodel in exchange for their Karrthus (courtesy of Oko), then resolve a Deadeye Navigator, which I immediately pair with Karrthus. I then blink Karrthus and steal all of my opponent's dragons.
(They died on the next turn)

A Glimmer of Hope Amidst Disappointment

The recent return to Innistrad brought two new sets and with them a smattering of Spirits. Unfortunately it seems Spirits have lost the spirit of the tribe which is their disruptive and interactive nature, instead taking in Aura flip sides as the other half of their transformative Disturb mechanic. Midnight Hunt frankly had very little outside of Spectral Adversary. Adversary was exciting but ultimately not enough to make the cut. Crimson Vow is doing a little better with tempting selections like Dorothea, Vengeful Victim Flip, Katilda, Dawnhart Martyr Flip, and Dreamshackle Geist. The first two are really just beaters. Dorothea is a one shot big beat on the cheap that can bring an Invocation of Saint Traft effect from the yard, which is probably just more efficient for the beats than Katilda, even without the lifelink. Dreamshackle Geist seems like a Shacklegeist that trades tap down efficiency for combat efficiency. I’d probably still take Shacklegeist for the mana efficiency.
The most intriguing new ghost has to be Cemetery Illuminator. This offers something new, unique, and potentially powerful to the tribe. Especially in tandem with Rattlechains, this neat little spook lets you play with the top of your deck, effectively in your hand. This can help you dig a little more effectively and trick opponents. Spirits love tricks. Rattlechains allows you to get this benefit in your opponent’s turn as well. Yum. My favorite aspect of the card (especially compared to all but the green member of the ‘Cemetery’ cycle) is that the repeatable hits to the graveyard give the card some graveyard hate applications. We’ll see if the card has what it takes. I love the design so will have to see how it performs.

Edgar, Charmed Groom Flip apparently didn't age well. This new card is a fine addition (the deck is presently running Thirsting Bloodlord for reference), but he falls short of his first incarnation. However, he'll fit in somewhere, replacing some minor effect more likely than upgrading one.
Welcoming Vampire is good. It has the issues of being non-black and having that annoying once a turn clause, but it still plays well with Edgar.
Cemetery Gatekeeper is unable to cut it. It's nice that it's a 2-drop and exiles from graveyards, but non-black and only hits one card.
Markov Purifier joins the rest of the life-gain payoffs that hover near the deck. There aren't enough triggers to justify at the moment, but worth remembering in a future version.
Voldaren Estate is probably worth running? I see little reason to care about Blood tokens, but it fixes, doesn't always require life, and has a low opportunity cost. It's not a Swamp, but that's about the only downside.
Crossway Troublemakers is gross at 6 mana, but I have longed for more vampires that grant lifelink to the squad. Perhaps this is an alternative to Zagras, Thief of Heartbeats?
Midnight Arsonist offers some card advantage and table-tempo, although its restriction is one of the odder ones I've seen, and certainly limits its upside.
Olivia's Wrath is kindof icky. I get that it doesn't kill my creatures, but it's 5 mana and needs setup to do anything. I could see running it, but I don't believe it's paramount.
Markov Enforcer is better than Vein Drinker, but that card got the boot years ago. 6 mana is just too much for most effects. Similarly, Timothar, Baron of Bats is cool, but also 6 mana.
Scion of Opulence probably doesn't make it. I like treasure tokens, but I'm not sure that enough creatures die to warrant its inclusion. In an aristocrats deck it makes more sense. Compare this to Pawn of Ulamog, which was almost cut until Cordial Vampire saved him. The pseudo-draw clause is a fine rider, but I still don't think enough to get it over the hump.
-Anowon, the Ruin Sage, +Edgar, Charmed Groom Flip
-Fiend of the Shadows, +Welcoming Vampire
-Zagras, Thief of Heartbeats (?), +Crossway Troublemakers. Ascendant Evincar could go instead if needed.

Pulling Staples

A lot of the fun of this deck is pulling off goofy, high-variance plays using cards that are, uh, under-appreciated. Seems like the generic stuff could probably go? Maybe they’re not staples, but just boring?

Back Track
jconeil1988, 3 years ago
Went back a bit, re-added the rest of the usuable bloodrush creatures and Knollspine Invocation and removed Fury, Subtletly, Spectral Adversary, and Malevolent Hermit Flip. Mostly because I felt that I had too much removal, and not enough ways to repeatably pump my commander.
There have been a few cards spoiled from Crimson Vow that I like for this deck. After the full spoilers I'll update with what cards I'm looking at for the deck.

More Land

I find the deck struggles with reliably getting to 4 mana, and also struggles with getting green mana or second / third land drops early. The 2 copies of Gut Shot have been disappointing, and can be rendered obsolete with enough ramp (still allowing a turn 4 leviathan). As such, both copies will be replaced with a Forest and an additional Glasspool Mimic Flip. I'm also replacing one Island with a Castle Vantress for some late-game card quality.
Furthermore, I'm moving one Simic Charm to the sideboard in favor of the 4th Growth Spiral to assist with ramp. Finally, I'm replacing one Inkwell Leviathan with a Simic Sky Swallower to see how it performs. While its toughness is worse and it lacks islandwalk, its easier to cast and can block flying threats.
