Finally expanding my horizons!!

Commander (EDH) forum

Posted on Aug. 17, 2014, 3:48 p.m. by IATEAREPUBLICAN

So I FINALLY got a job (I've been 16 for 6 months now) with my grandparents and the starting paycheck is 13$ an hour so I've got a lot of stuff to work with now. So the first thing I'm gonna do is make 2 EDH decks. The first one I want to be more competitive, yet fun to play with and against. Suggestions? My favorite archetype generally is goodstuffs so I thought Maelstrom Wanderer but my friend is already running him. So I decided to get out of my comfort zone. I'd just prefer no control. Some I've had in mind: Rhys, some R/W angel from Avacyn (can't remember her name), Karador, but I'll take any suggestion of a commander that you build around and is fun to play with and against. Otherwise, my other deck I wanted to make really casual and janky, and the first thing that came to mind was Shadowborn Apostle . Then I realized I needed a commander, and I came up with two that seem the best for it, and that's Athreos, God of Passage and Teysa, Orzhov Scion . Which one is better? Are there better choices than them out there?

My knowledge of commander is very limited because I started playing in Dragon's Maze, so I don't know anything good before the RTR set. Anyway, any help and suggestions would be awesome. Thanks everyone!

$13 an hour? Shit man, keep that job as long as you can.

The Angel you're thinking of is Gisela, Blade of Goldnight .

Being 20, I would love to work for $13 an hour. You are very lucky.

Personally, if I had 100% expendable income, I would pick my favorite legendary creature, and build a pimped out deck full of good stuff. That all comes down to your favorite color combination. If you go with Gisela, you're probably going to go very broke because EDH Angels is probably the most popular archetype.

However, depending on how competitive you are, you could also take this opportunity to buy a good competitive modern / legacy deck.

I know you say you don't like control but I've seen a Teysa, Orzhov Scion deck before that ran Shadowborn Apostle's along side Dictate of Erebos , Grave Pact , No Rest for the Wicked , Kuon, Ogre Ascendant and Dark Prophecy for a very strong board control

Man, you had my swindled. I was positive that it was going to be a Kruphix, God of Horizons deck!

You can run Shadowborn Apostle in a Karador, Ghost Chieftain deck. Example here.

Check my bio. I have several resources specifically for EDH players, and they should help to introduce you to the format and make your first choices.

I'd like to make a quick suggestion.. get a savings account and put money in it every week, even if it's just twenty bucks or so. It kills me to look back and realize how much money I could've saved. Anyways, taking a little bit of time to learn about personal finance goes a long way. Congrats on the job!

Definitely try The Mimeoplasm , it can be turn 3/4 win in some cases, but can also play more casually. And, bug is just a really fun strong color combo

IATEAREPUBLICAN, I've built a couple hundred EDH decks, each with a different commander, so I think I can be able to help you out.

You said that the first one you wanted to be these things:

  1. Competitive
  2. Fun to play with
  3. Fun to play against
  4. No control
  5. Goodstuffs

But unfortunately, Goodstuffs decks are most competitive if they are control decks. I am going to suggest that since Goodstuffs is what you enjoy the most, look at a commander on the other three qualities and add in number 2 and number 5 to your preferred amount. Luckily, 3 is defined as no infinite combos and no control, so 3 and 4 are pretty close. This leaves us with the possibility of midrange (very easy to fit in goodstuffs), aggro (also rather easy), and non infinite combo (a bit harder, but still not bad). So these are the possibilities I think you can use for your first deck:

  1. A competitive midrange-based commander with goodstuff thrown in.
  2. A competitive aggro-based commander with goodstuff thrown in.
  3. A competitive non-infinite-combo-based commander with goodstuff thrown in.

So for this, what colors do you like? What colors do you dislike? The more information you give me, the more I can help you with some suggestions.

For the second deck, you said you wanted these qualities;

  1. Less competitive/more casual
  2. Janky (I tend to see this as a decklist that just looks hilarious)

This is going to encompass a LOT of decks, so any direction in terms of colors or archetype (aggro, combo, control, midrange) would be great.

(Also, the only commander I know of that is good with Shadowborn Apostle is Shirei, Shizo's Caretaker .)

@GoldGhost012 yeah that's right! Thanks a lot for the info!@ThatBlueMage I have thought about getting into modern but decided for EDH first because that's the format my friends play in. However I've got my modern deck planned out and its based around a deck that won worlds in 2001 or something. Its Bant. Otherwise thanks for the input :)@drpeppercan yeah I'd rather stay away from control cause my friends dont like to be dicks to each other when playing. So we don't use counter spells or most infinite combos, I believe. Thanks for the suggestion, however!@miracleHat you know, I actually love Kruphix as a commander but my friend is running him actually and we like to stay diverse so we can trade decks and okay with different styles and stuff. Its a really great group to play with :)@Indigoindigo personally I'd rather run Karador competitively than anything to bring out his true power, even if I don't choose him for my competitive commander. But I'll still take a look at the deck just 'cause. Thanks for the suggestion though man! :)@Epochalyptik I'll definitely check that our man. Thanks a lot! @themindbullet actually I'm taking a Financial Apps class in high school that is pretty awesome and teaching me a bunch of stuff that will save me later. I am saving 30% of each paycheck, even if it sounds like a lot. But I work 30 hours a week, so why not? So that's about 225$ into savings a week. Which is nuts... But thank you for the congratulations!@Brett05 on Cockatrice I run a Mimeoplasm deck based around a bunch of tutor cards, Buried Alive, Blighted Agent , and Ghoultree . He's pretty funny. Swinging for 10 infect unblockable is bonkers. Thank you for the input! @MagicalHacker I found that I have very much liked RUG, Dega, BUG, Jund, Simic, Boros, and Selesnya decks in the past. So maybe something within those quarters? Sorry that the least is pretty extensive. On to the jank deck, I think I've mostly decided in Athreos because he's pretty hard to get rid of, plus, it gives my opponent a sort of "pick your poison" type aspect of play that seems very fun. Either take damage and a lot or just watch the demons come in. Plus it gives me access to Return to the Ranks if they decide to take damage, and I can search for it with Rune-Scarred Demon. Thanks a lot for your help man!

IATEAREPUBLICAN saving $225/week is excellent. I myself can only save some $50/week, even though I rarely spend more than $20/week on gaming.

I just wanted to say that. Good luck on the deck and with the job!

miracleHat says... #15

@IATEAREPUBLICAN: i wish my playgroup was diverse! I have two mono blue decks (one of them is my v-clique) the other is Memnarch . There are also two oloro decks. If you wanted to do something fun, Rhys the Exiled is very underrated in my opinion. Depending on how you make the deck, there are multiple infinite combos with elves, many of them build off of other combos that are really fun!

August 18, 2014 6:53 p.m.

@miracleHat isn't there a G/W Rhys that deals with tokens?

August 18, 2014 7:49 p.m.

miracleHat says... #17

There is, the problem with it is that you get hated. Most rhys decks run off of infinite combos which normally gets you targeted ASAP!

I personally have found that rhys boring and common like all other rhys decks. Most of them run off of the same combo with Obsidian Battle-Axe /Sword of the Paruns /Sword of the Meek .

Rhys the Exiled has (in my opinion) a lot more synergies. Plus when people see Rhys the Exiled , they think of some crappy elf deck.

August 18, 2014 8:03 p.m.

miracleHat what cards should make up the black aspect of the deck?

August 18, 2014 8:13 p.m.

miracleHat says... #19

With black, you get better tutor power. Elves also happen to be b/g as a tribe so you get all of the other g/b - black elves. Draw power is superior then the white counterpart in the form of Phyrexian Arena /Necropotence /whatever else you choose. The final thing that black has is the reanimation. You will find with elves that they die quickly and often. Patriarch's Bidding , Oversold Cemetery , Living Death , and Yawgmoth's Will are great surprises when you bring back 20 different elves and win.

Another thing with G/b elves, is that you are sacrificing combo for control.

August 18, 2014 9:49 p.m.

So elves are control? I never really wanted control. With elves I'd rather ramp them out, ramp lots of Mana, then use someone like Ezuri to go nuts. But that may just be my personal experience from my friends deck

August 18, 2014 9:57 p.m.

miracleHat says... #21

No, it is not a control deck. It has controlling aspects to the deck, but it is not a control deck.

What i meant is that you are sacrificing the power to combo off or do whatnot, but gaining ways to shape the board/game to your advantage.

August 18, 2014 10:21 p.m.

Ohhhh ok I get it. That sounds pretty cool actually...

MagicalHacker says... #23

(TL;DR at the bottom)

No it's okay, even with such a large possibility, you still only have 17 options, which isn't too bad.

First off, in Boros, we have five commanders:

So this guy is going to work the best with tokens, specifically red tokens. That said, this type of strategy can employ good stuff elements since it's easy to just include other good cards that work well with this aggro token-based commander. MagicalHacker - Agrus Kos, Wojek Veteran

This is another token build, but this time, the gimmick is getting their heroic to constantly trigger. By running cheap instants, sorceries, and auras that cantrip (draw cards), you can maintain card advantage will continuously giving all of your tokens relevant buffs and keywords. MagicalHacker - Anax and Cymede

Of all the gods, this god literally says it's the god of winning, so that had to be good. He is yet another token deck since you will never lose the tokens you make, and with such large numbers, it's definitely going to be hard to block all of them consistently. He doesn't actually BUFF the tokens like the other token deck in this color combo, but playing with other cards that buff tokens are completely fine instead since his abilities are so well designed for have an army or large amount of creatures, which token decks reliably do. MagicalHacker - Iroas, God of Victory

This is the fourth token deck in Boros, and this has yet another flavor than the other two. Here, his buff is going to be incredibly useful with tokens, but you have to jump through the hoop of achieving metalcraft first. This lets you run artifacts that are just good and fun, and meanwhile, all your tokens are threats that make all if your opponents sweat. A lot. MagicalHacker - Jor Kadeen, the Prevailer

I was starting to feel like there weren't any good options for something other than a token deck in this recommendation list, but then Tajic shows up. Anytime you have an indestructible, you should automatically think voltron, because it gets around board wipes, it gets around lethal blocks, and it gets around a lot of target removal. Stick hexproof in it and watch your opponents REALLY cry at that point. While it's tempting to try to get Tajic's battalion to work, it's honestly too big of a hoop to jump through, since +5 power is more easily and stably achieved through auras or equipments. Still open to goodstuff changes as well. MagicalHacker - Tajic, Blade of the Legion

While the temptation is to jam pack this build full of ginormous creatures, I want to suggest this potentially novel approach: 0-drops and suspend. Once you play Karametra, Memnite becomes attached to a Spoils of Victory , which means once Karametra resolves, most likely you are going to dump 1-3 creatures from your hand for free and get 1-3 lands. Think about that. FOR FREE. She's definitely a mid range all star for the format. Suspend cards work the same way except you pay mana before Karametra resolves, and you cast them for free after she enters. Epochrasite is a really great card with her, but this also lets you run what ever expensive cards your heart desires. MagicalHacker - Karametra, God of Harvests

Hopefully you're not tired of hearing about token decks after going into Boros, because Rhys is DEFINITELY worth a huuuuge mention. Primarily the fact that his second ability literally doubles your tokens (triples if you have a Parallel Lives out) is going to be crazy bonkers. The fact that he's a one drop ain't too bad either. As long as you've got a lot of token making permanents in the deck, you can run your favorite cards no problem. Just make sure you include stuff like Luminarch Ascension , Collective Blessing , True Conviction , Cathars' Crusade , and Beastmaster Ascension , and you're good to go. MagicalHacker - Rhys the Redeemed (Selesnya).

Although Tajic is a great voltron with indestructible, I would say Sigarda is the best voltron because, not only does she have hexproof to make her a good voltron to begin with, but she also has anti-sacrifice built in. As if that's not enough, she's also got power equal to her cmc and flying, so not many other voltrons can say they are as permanent as Sigarda. Even more than other voltrons with more colors available or potentially more damage built in, she definitely allows for a more stable build, so she's worth using. You can still through in good stuff cards like the swords, so you may like her. MagicalHacker - Sigarda, Host of Herons

If you like having big tokens as compared to having lots of small tokens with Rhys, or if you like big butts and you cannot lie, then Trostani is the general for you. With all the life gain it does, you will be well off, so play all the humongous tokens and creatures your heart desires. By playing tokens, you have the option of populating which is a very strong effect to use in this situation. MagicalHacker - Trostani, Selesnya's Voice

In Simic, there are three legends you can consider:

While most people build around tokens with Edric, building around unblockable creatures is actually a much strong way to approach him. If you can get unblockable creatures on the board, then you can keep dumping out large amounts of creatures without worrying about board wipes since you will have a full hand. As if that's not enough, he also singlehandedly convince opponents to attack each other. It's actually kind of funny really. It goes without saying that there is plenty of room to include whatever you want as well. MagicalHacker - Edric, Spymaster of Trest

While most commanders usually have one good ability, Kruphix is weird because he has two. He is going to be very similar to Omnath, Locus of Mana builds since, while he doesn't actually ramp, he does store mana, which means casting those awkwardly expensive Eldrazi and such, like It That Betrays , is going to be a piece of cake. Additionally, his Spellbook ability is one that hasn't been seen on a commander before, so here's the cards that will combo with that: Maro -like creatures. These cards were designed to be balanced having a p/t of a maximum of 7, so when it becomes 34, things get messy. Obviously, you will have to run cards that will let you draw lots and lots of cards, but in blue and green, there are tons of those and who doesn't like to draw cards in EDH/Commander? MagicalHacker - Kruphix, God of Horizons

If you've never experienced the joys of charge counters, let me introduce you to the guy who can make Darksteel Reactor a reliable win con in EDH/Commander. Not only that, but he can double counters on Primordial Hydra type creatures too. This guy is definitely a powerhouse for these kinds of cards, but he still has plenty of room for general good stuff cards as well. MagicalHacker - Vorel of the Hull Clade

In Sultai (BUG), there's really only one option:

Although he works best with infect, really any form of big creature shenanigans and self mill make him a scary aggro commander. In fact, by playing both, you can attack with the low power infect creatures until your opponent manages to remove them, mill big creatures into graveyards, and then make an extra large infect commander for five mana. Pretty cool if you ask me. MagicalHacker - The Mimeoplasm

In Mardu (BWR), we have another option:

This is somewhat of an infamous deck because she's just that good. She's a great combo-aggro commander, as long as you run plenty of dragons, demons, angels, or any combination of the three. The only weakness here is many people see her as more powerful than she actually is, so she has a possibility of becoming over targeted. MagicalHacker - Kaalia of the Vast

In Jund, we have got only one commander that fits our earlier criteria:

So this guy is cool because he looks like a nice token-based aggro commander, but really he is a combo commander focused on graveyard shenanigans. There are tons of effects like his, and they are all great in the deck. On top of that, people usually ignore him until it's too late. MagicalHacker - Sek'Kuar, Deathkeeper

In Temur (RUG), we have two final options:

This guy is going to work around having lots of colorless creatures and Glimpse of Nature effects. Basically, you chain them so you get a whole bunch of creatures for zero mana while keeping a pretty sizable hand. Combos all day. MagicalHacker - Animar, Soul of Elements

While doubling instants/sorceries is nice, I think that a card without a lasting effect is better replaced by a card with a repeating effect because of how long EDH/Commander games tend to be. (Also, a permanent is something that needs to be answered; a instant/sorcery removed itself after it's done.) So with Riku, doubling creatures is super powerful. On top of that, you have all the options of what creatures you play. With enough ramp, this guy can get totally out of control. In my opinion, what he is going to be great to build around is good ETBs. If you spend eight mana on a Craterhoof Behemoth , wouldn't you rather spend eleven mana for two? MagicalHacker - Riku of Two Reflections

TL;DR

  1. MagicalHacker - Agrus Kos, Wojek Veteran
  2. MagicalHacker - Anax and Cymede
  3. MagicalHacker - Iroas, God of Victory
  4. MagicalHacker - Jor Kadeen, the Prevailer
  5. MagicalHacker - Tajic, Blade of the Legion
  6. MagicalHacker - Karametra, God of Harvests
  7. MagicalHacker - Rhys the Redeemed (Selesnya)
  8. MagicalHacker - Sigarda, Host of Herons
  9. MagicalHacker - Trostani, Selesnya's Voice
  10. MagicalHacker - Edric, Spymaster of Trest
  11. MagicalHacker - Kruphix, God of Horizons
  12. MagicalHacker - Vorel of the Hull Clade
  13. MagicalHacker - The Mimeoplasm

Read the sections below as well.

As for the Athreos idea, unfortunately, opponents will usually pay the 3 for 1 or 2 Shadowborn Apostle so that you don't have all six again. Athreos is one of two gods that I see as poor generals in commander. I think the reason for this is exactly the "pick your poison" strategy, since the other bad god for EDH/Commander that I would say is Mogis, who also offers a choice. The fact of the matter is that your opponent will ALWAYS pick the one you don't care about at the moment, so they basically have no abilities. Do you still want a god as a commander for the second deck though?

Sorry for the late response, you know how the first day of school can be, imagine that for a college senior lol.

(TL;DR begins two sections up)

August 19, 2014 12:21 a.m.

@MagicalHacker its totally cool don't worry about it! Personally I really like Vorel of the Hull Clade , but by any chance is there a way to make it Temur or Sultai by any chance. If I were to make it Temur, that gives me access to Savageborn Hydra and Apocalypse Hydra and if I were to make it Sultai, I gain access to tutors, stuff like Phyrexian Arena , and even better, Corpsejack Menace . Or even Jund could be an alternative. Would that be valid? I feel like I could make Kresh Bloodbraided go absolutely nuts with that. Would Kresh be a good idea for a voltron type thing based of making him massive with other massive creatures? Cause honestly, that sounds like the most fun to me now.

August 19, 2014 10:58 a.m.

MagicalHacker says... #25

Unfortunately, there aren't any counter-based commanders in those colors that are cheap enough to run effectively, so if you really like doing counter-based stuff, I can only recommend Vorel of the Hull Clade at this point. While Kresh the Bloodbraided does interact with counters to some extent, his ability asks more for a voltron build, and he's a poor voltron because he can easily be Murder ed without any kind of evasion in himself (like indestructible, hexproof, regenerate, etc.). If you choose to go with him, then that's great, but I honestly would not put myself out there to recommend him.

Story Time!

So back in the day, I had a Skullbriar, the Walking Grave voltron deck. This to me was a no-brainer at the time, because he only costs 2 mana and there are metric tons of cards to put counters on him. Even if he does get killed, I can easily play him again and swing that same turn with no problem! Well this is what I found: Murphy's law is true. If it can be killed, it will be killed. Over. And over. And over. Ask me how many times I won or how much fun I had with that deck, and I'll show you that I took it apart long ago.

August 19, 2014 1:18 p.m.

nobu_the_bard says... #26

I have a deck with Anax and Cymede also, it is a bit different from MagicalHacker's, in that I was more focused on using Auras. It is over here if you're curious: Anax and Cymede, Hero EDH

I can relate to the problem you had with Skullbriar, I haven't included enough tools to protect the duo yet. I paid 13 mana to cast A&C once. It is super fun but has some minor card disadvantage and dealing-with-flying issues to work out yet.

I like MagicalHacker's take on it. I might check out a couple of those creatures on there, but mine was trying to keep mana costs aggressively low.

August 19, 2014 3:07 p.m.

Honestly winning with Kresh would be my last option. I more would like to make massive dudes with hydras and cards like Corpsejack Menace, Doubling Season, Primal Vigor, Kalonian Hydra and stuff, along with other fun cards like Sarkhan Vol, Garruk Primal Hunter, Wildspeaker and Caller of Beasts. But I'll still look into Vorel just cause I really like Master Biomancer as well.

August 19, 2014 5:43 p.m.

MagicalHacker says... #28

Master Biomancer is a balls-to-the-walls awesome card.

August 19, 2014 6:59 p.m.

It is pretty awesome. I'd love to incorporate a bunch of hydras into a deck and honestly, thinking about it, Vorel is probably better than Kresh because although I dont have access to the red hydras or Corpsejack Menace, I have a disposable doubler anytime I need it, at least by turn 3 (Vorel IS a three-drop right?). Plus Master Biomancer is too cool for his own good. And honestly, I dont know what else blue gives me besides Fathom Mage and that one Phyrexian dude that copies cards. What are the best hydras? I can only think of Kalonian (obviously), Primordial, and Protean. Are Mistcutter or Genesis worth it? Are they're any green tutors besides Tooth and Nail?

August 19, 2014 7:37 p.m.

MagicalHacker says... #30

All the arcbound creatures with modular would be a hilarious addition as well. xD

August 19, 2014 8:17 p.m.

What are the arcbounds? And are they any green tutors besides Tooth and Nail? And what are good additions for hydras with this? Also, what are some good cards to get counters onto Master Biomancer? Sorry about all of the questions :/

August 19, 2014 9:47 p.m.

MagicalHacker says... #32

Arcbound Crusher is one of them. Theres like 8-12 of them (idr how many there are) but with that ability, you can just have a great old time.

There are plenty of tutors that tutor for lots of things. Here is a link to all tutors available in these colors other than ramp.

Creatures with graft would work pretty well if you cast them before the Biomancer. Additionally, Clone s are great with it, but aren't too great with the rest of the deck...

No, it's all good :) this comment took me like a minute and a half to write.

August 19, 2014 9:57 p.m.

Hehe ok thanks a lot man! I've seen Graft before and I will probably use those because I see that they tend to be less mana intensive than the arcbounds. Clone was going into the list too, actually, just 'cause haha... And i'll take a look at that list! Again, thanks a lost!

Vorel is an absolute beast and Simic is among the strongest two color combinations in EDH, making it a joy to both build with and play. I realize my deck is hardly "budget conscious" but if you're ever interested in what sort of tech it runs take a look here: Look Ma no Wraths. I break down some deck-theory stuff there, but I'll cover some basics here.

You're building around Vorel. You need two things: things for him to target, and ways to get his effect going multiple times.

For targets, in EDH, you don't want just "big creatures," you want creatures with useful effects. Efficiency or utility. Some good examples include Etched Oracle , Spike Weaver , Fathom Mage , Plaxcaster Frogling , Lighthouse Chronologist .

For getting the most out of Vorel you're either going to want effects like Illusionist's Bracers and Rings of Brighthearth , a means to untap him like Prophet of Kruphix and Minamo, School at Water's Edge , or both. Doubling gets completely out of hand very quickly, and doing it multiple times a round can turn a single +1/+1 counter into a legitimate threat. Good tutors include Green Sun's Zenith and Chord of Calling as a means of increasing your odds of hitting Prophet of Kruphix of Seedborn Muse , but in blue you can just run straight card advantage to get you through your deck.

The one weakness Simic has is that, without White or Black, you're sort of weak on board control. No Wraths in these colors I'm afraid, but Blue has some good options in Cyclonic Rift and Wash Out so I went with a bouncing sub-theme. Since you have multiple opponents to deal with in EDH trading one card for one threat is rarely going to be enough, card advantage is important and cards that remove multiple threats are huge. Be sure to include some form of board control in your design, don't bank on overrunning 3 opponents without interference from one of them.

On the topic of efficiency: ramp is good, ramp that gets you more cards than you put into it is better. Cultivate and Kodama's Reach are both auto includes, and I run Hunting Wilds , Skyshroud Claim and Ranger's Path on top of Vorel-friendly mana ramp like Fertilid , Everflowing Chalice and Astral Cornucopia . Ramp is critical to deck reliability, making sure you get to the point where you can cast what you're drawing game after game. I know this sounds like a basic concept, but it's amplified in EDH and all multiplayer formats because it's not just one other player going after you draw-go because of a missed land drop, it's three or four players sitting between you and another chance to drop a land. EDH thrives on big effects and endurance and these cards simply get you more out of the slot than most in that role.

August 20, 2014 12:32 a.m.

Awesome! Thank you so much FancyTuesday! Even just reading that and not even looking at the deck yet there are cards I know I need in there like Minamo, School at Water's Edge and Lighthouse Chronologist . Definitely still gonna look at the deck. Thanks a lot!
