mainly the monarch is used as bait for opponents. Yes, there is the standard monarch usage like "on your upkeep if you are the monarch...." and "when you are/become the monarch..." but aside from the bare minimum of that, the main engine is to control the combat step. Whether that is choosing attackers and blockers for your opponents, making them pay in mana or life for each attacker, or simply destroying all blockers/attackers. There are a handful of cards that give me extra combat steps, and that is where the infinite combos come in, but typically dont activate the infinite combo unless im playing with other combo decks, that way i can still play casual.
