Last Gasp Discussion

In this deck, Defile might be the correct replacement for Last Gasp .

I don't know what you tested against but I've had nothing but issues with your mana base. If you're happy with it though, that's what matters.

For the SB you have:

  • 2x Cleansing Nova - too expensive for what you need it for
  • 2x Demystify - lack of versatility isn't worth the low cost in this environment
  • Despark - why only one? This card is awesome
  • 2x Divest - why? Why not Last Gasp instead
  • 3x Duress - in a control dominant environment this is a main deck card. Even in SB you should run a full set
  • 1x Mortify - why only one and why is this not main
  • 3x Revitalize - The decks you'd bring this against are going to inflict a lot more than 3. Try The Wanderer or since you plan to make a lot of tokens what about Ajani, Wise Counselor or Ajani's Welcome . Or Ritual of Rejuvenation is just better if you're worried about burn
  • Sorin, Vengeful Bloodlord - he doesn't impress me.

So there's that. Can you PLEASE do me a favor... you don't have to keep it this way but can you at least TRY taking out Risk Factor because it absolutely sucks in your deck and replace it with Chromatic Lantern ¿ just for a little bit? Give it a few games and if it doesn't work then change it back. ..

Hey hkhssweiss, much thanks for the input! :)

I totally forgot that Vona's Hunger existed! :)) I'll have to watch how quickly I can get to 10 permanents.

I think I can try running Dismember; the -5/-5 is significant, compared to Sickening Shoal which might end up becoming a pitched Last Gasp most of the time. That one mana to pay can be a steep cost on when the game is down to the wire, but it lets me hit Atraxa, Edgar, and the like.

As for Extraplanar Lens, I'm actually going back and forth with it and Crypt Ghast, hence I haven't unsleeved my Snow-Covered Swamp.

Extraplanar Lens gets me two-for-oned in my meta, even when I use it as a Bubbling Muck. I also have trouble making the most out of it because I run a lot of nonbasic lands. Crypt Ghast dies to the Pox effects and other removal spells but it gives me Extort and at least I don't lose a land when they respond to it. I used to run Nirkana Revenant too, along with Caged Sun but it was too high on the curve, so they got cut out.

I do want to run Contamination so that I have 2 functional copies of Infernal Darkness, but I don't have the creature support for it.

Sadistic Sacrament was once part of the deck, but I ended up being able to regularly pay for the Kicker cost, which made me rather unpopular. I switched to Praetor's Grasp and added multicolor mana rocks so it can also act as an "off-color" tutor. However, I do still bring it out when I'm playing in a cutthroat environment.

The order is this. You activate Abyssal Hunter and his ability goes on the stack. The opponent responds with Rend Flesh killing your hunter, but his ability is still on the stack. If no other abilities are played Abyssal Hunter resolves, tapping the targeted creature and doing 1 damage to it. Although it is not specified on gatherer, I'm basing my answer on the fact that his ability works very much like Champion of Wits'

Use Champion of Wits’s power as the first ability resolves to determine if you want to use the ability and how many cards you draw if you do. If you use the ability, you discard two cards regardless of how many cards you draw. If Champion of Wits leaves the battlefield before that ability resolves, use its last known power. (2017-07-14)

In that sense if Abyssal Hunter's power was different from 1, say he died from Last Gasp he wouldn't do damage at all, but would still tap the creature.

Also, I doubt that this could be an option but I know an interesting card that can synergise well with this deck.

Momentary Blink

It can be used to trigger Torrential Gearhulk and Reflector Mage abilities.

This Momentary Blink can actually be a counterspell through Torrential Gearhulk, if you choose Unwind or Rewind, it actually untaps more lands than you've used. That's very helpful to cast a full powered Sphinx's Revelation at your opponent's endphase.

I'm new here so let me just relink you correctly my decklist :

3 Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir

1 Skeletal Vampire

1 Dralnu, Lich Lord

2 Dreadship Reef

1 Underground River

3 Dimir Aqueduct

9 Island

2 Swamp

3 Desert

3 Drowned Catacomb

4 Rune Snag

3 Spell Snare

4 Rewind

4 Think Twice

4 Mystical Teachings

1 Seize the Soul

3 Mana Leak

1 Cancel

4 Repeal

1 Cremate

1 Last Gasp

1 Sudden Death

SB:

3 Persecute

4 Deathmark

1 Slay

1 Seize the Soul

1 Trickbind

2 Moonlight Bargain

Venser, Shaper Savant

Chill to the Bone, Deny Reality, Flesh to Dust, Heartstabber Mosquito all cost too much for removal. IMO you should only play removal at 1,2 or 3 cmc. Things like Last Gasp or Grasp of Darkness are good in this format also Rend Flesh and Eyeblight's Ending

fastzero Oh thank you for those suggestions, appreciate it. Im definitely replacing Last Gasp with Terminate, maybe ill even put some more copies of it inside.

I was considering Evolving Wilds or Terramorphic Expanse but it makes the deck slower and it is allready very slow.

But i haven't thought about using it, to brainstorm unnecessary things away that's a really good move, thank you, i'll definitely consider it.

Great list! But wheres the Terminate? Terminate is better than Flame Slash and Last Gasp ! =D And to u extract the overpower of Brainstorm is recommended to u have some shuffle effects, like fetchs Evolving Wilds, etc. Sometimes is great u put 2 lands that is flooded in ur hand(sometimes u get flood in mana and ur hand have i dont know, 5 lands) in the top of ur deck and shuffle it. Sorry about my english, im workin on it =)
