Rhys the Redeemed – Selesnya Token Swarm

Deck Overview

This deck is built around Rhys the Redeemed, focusing on a go-wide token strategy that aims to generate an overwhelming board presence and capitalize on powerful doubling effects. With efficient token production, anthem boosts, and explosive finishers, the deck swarms the battlefield and ends games with a single, devastating swing.

Rhys offers incredible early-game token value and scales into the late game by doubling your entire token army—making him the perfect engine for this archetype.

Key Synergies

  • Token Doublers: Doubling Season, Parallel Lives, and Anointed Procession work alongside Rhys’s activated ability to exponentially increase your board.
  • Wide-Board Payoffs: Craterhoof Behemoth, Pathbreaker Ibex, and Triumph of the Hordes turn your board into a lethal alpha strike.
  • Go-Wide Generators: March of the Multitudes, Finale of Glory, and Storm Herd provide the initial fuel to get your army going.
  • Anthem Effects: Trostani Discordant, Mirari’s Wake, and Gavony Township boost your swarm into true threats.
  • Mana Conversion: Cryptolith Rite, Growing Rites of Itlimoc, and Priest of Titania turn bodies into explosive mana ramp.
  • Protection & Removal: Aura Shards punishes opponents for letting you have tokens, while Privileged Position, Shalai, Voice of Plenty, and Lightning Greaves protect your board and your commander.

Why Rhys over Trostani?

  • Rhys is only one mana to cast and starts generating value immediately with his token creation and doubling abilities.
  • He provides a consistent mana sink and doesn’t rely on entering the battlefield for impact.
  • Trostani still plays a key role in the 99, giving anthem value, token creation (on ETB), and life gain, but Rhys allows the deck to come online much faster.

Win Conditions

  1. Overwhelming Combat Damage
  2. Pump the board with Craterhoof Behemoth, Pathbreaker Ibex, or Overwhelming Stampede to swing for lethal.
  3. Use Triumph of the Hordes to win through infect with your massive swarm.

  4. Token Swarm Explosion

  5. Use March of the Multitudes, Second Harvest, or Rhys's own doubling ability to flood the battlefield.
  6. Storm Herd adds a sky army to your ground force.

  7. Value Engine Advantage

  8. Draw cards with Skullclamp by feeding extra tokens.
  9. Generate huge mana through Cryptolith Rite and tap effects, then funnel it into Rhys’s doubling ability or a game-ending spell.

Game Plan

  • Early Game: Ramp with mana dorks (Llanowar Elves, Fyndhorn Elves), cast Rhys early, and begin token generation with small effects.
  • Mid Game: Set up token doublers and begin using Rhys's 6-mana doubling ability to snowball.
  • Late Game: Swing in with a massive board, or use your overwhelming token presence to enable a combo-like finish with Craterhoof or Triumph of the Hordes.

Strengths & Weaknesses

  • Strengths:
  • Explosive scaling and synergy with early commander deployment.
  • Redundancy with multiple token generators and finishers.
  • Resilient game plan that doesn’t rely on a single card or line.

  • Weaknesses:

  • Vulnerable to board wipes, though Rhys helps rebuild quickly.
  • Can be mana-intensive in the mid-game without enough ramp.
  • Struggles against stax pieces and effects like Humility, Cursed Totem, or Torpor Orb.
