Mazirek, Master in the Sac

MTGO*

savagemt

Although he is less popular than his Commander 2015 companion, Meren of Clan Nel Toth, I think that Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest is definitely worthy of commanding his own deck. Also there are like 3 Meren decks in my meta so if I wanna play Golgari I need to diversify...

Anyway, what does Mazirek bring to the table the Meren doesn't? First of all, when he sticks around, your board will get out of control FAST. We are talking piles of counters here, building up not only thanks to your cards, but to your opponents, who are usually going to be running lands that sacrifice themselves or perhaps their own sacrifice themes. Secondly, Mazirek can easily threaten commander-damage kills WITH EVASION, something that Meren rarely offers. Finally, Mazirek doesn't have a ceiling; when Meren sticks around, you get diminishing returns on sacrifice shenanigans. An example of this is drawing Steve (Sakura-Tribe Elder) late game. With a Meren deck, you get to put your 17th experience counter down, but does that really matter? Alternatively, drawing him late with Mazirek will continue to increase the power of your creatures.

Let's move on to the deck, with CUTE SYNERGIES and INFINITE COMBOS.

Birthing Pod helps out with both of these things. The deck has a decent pod chain built-in, topping out with the classic Avenger of Zendikar + Craterhoof Behemoth . Also worth noting that you can start with podding away a token and get to relevant tech immediately (Viscera Seer and Blood Artist are good examples).

This deck is locked and loaded with a Cabal Coffers suite because massive amounts of mana is appealing to me. We will see how well it works out in playtesting.

Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest + Free Sac Outlet (ex. Ashnod's Altar or Sadistic Hypnotist) + Persist Creature ( Puppeteer Clique and Woodfall Primus) = Infinite Sacs + Bonus depending on which pieces you are using. These can definitely get nasty.

Death Cloud and Wave of Vitriol are VERY good for getting a ton of sacrifice triggers.

Right now I would like to improve the pod chain, specifically the top end. I think the actual numbers should be more like 4,3,2 in the 6,7,8 CMC spots. Also if you have suggestions for the 1-2 drops those would be helpful too!

Thanks for checking out this deck; let me know what you think and shoot me comments/suggestions!
