As the sun sets behind the thick trees of the forest, villagers bar their doors and windows, fearful prayers on their lips. Normal prayers for health and success are joined by those for survival on this night. The last fingers of sunlight pull the final sounds of the day with them. Silence falls as the full moon rises.
Families wait with bated breath, full of dread anticipating what might come. But the silence lingers. Mothers exhale in relief as they tuck children into bed and fathers loosen their white-knuckled grips on well worn swords and axes. Smiles and quiet laughs are shared as the night remains still.
Then a solitary, eerie howl shatters the silence. Wives clutch their husbands and children startle awake as more echo howls echo through the trees.
The hunt begins.
