Stoneshaker Shaman Discussion

@shwanerz88: The wastes are placeholders until I make my cuts and figure out what distribution of basics I want. I think you're right that 37 lands is too many, does 36 seem right?
@ZendikariWol: Anowon is a good card that just also happens to be a shaman. Given that I will (likely) have Graveborn to sacrifice, or get graveborn from sacrificing my other creatures, he isn't very harmful. He also strikes the right balance of strength, without being oppressive and unfun like Grave Pact . Fauna Shaman and the Lich are in the same boat, I don't do much with my graveyard but they're good cards. Card selection and tutoring with a relevant creature type is nice. I think I want to hold onto the creature-only mana producers because I currently have a high creature count and need the fixing. If I end up going down to <35 creatures I'll probably drop most of them. Stoneshaker Shaman is a card that makes my opponent's interaction harder without really hindering mine. There isn't a whole lot of combo at my LGS so I'm not too worried about other people slipping dangerous things past the control players. Mazirek is there because there is an aristocrat subtheme because of Sek'Kuar. He's a shaman who pumps my other dudes.

Anowon, the Ruin Sage : slow and introduces a different tribal theme- feels out of place, especially to vorthos weirdos like me. Can't have a vampire card in a shaman deck, man!
Beastcaller Savant , Bloodline Shaman , Shaman of Forgotten Ways , and more or less all of your planeswalkers: dependent on the number of creatures in your deck and even without the cut cards has a <50% chance to draw you a card.
Mindclaw Shaman : for you to get any real value out of him, you need to be casting an instant or sorcery that costs at least 4 mana. Decide depending on your meta whether that's consistently feasible.
Stoneshaker Shaman : how much instant interaction is there in your meta? If the answer is less than ALL OF IT, this card is bad.

Knollspine Dragon and Chancellor of the Forge weren't even on my radar, those seem fantastic. Just got a Tempt with Vengeance , so that's great! I already have a Tendershoot Dryad , so perhaps it'll take a slot till I find better alternatives. I've been gravitating towards things like War Cadence , Uphill Battle , Stoneshaker Shaman , Release the Gremlins , Overwhelming Instinct , Druids' Repository and Nacatl War-Pride .
Thanks very much mmcgeach. I appreciate it. It's going to be an experiment to see where the balance is, but I think it'll teach me a lot. If you're interested, I'll share the decklist with you when it's up.

Honestly I think the walkers do not go well with this deck. As it is all your threats hit the entire table, there is no disincentive to attacking you since you have no real option but to hit everyone almost equally. I would try to get a decent creature threat base so that at the least you can punish people who attack you more severely.
Thus the walkers you have will just get focussed whenever they come out. Maybe you can try more creatures such as Charmbreaker Devils, Combustible Gearhulk, Mindsparker, Scab-Clan Berserker, Stoneshaker Shaman, Urabrask the Hidden.
Btw if your playgroup allows, you can consider using a staples binder. I do as many of my cards are very expensive and I do not want to damage them during play.

@Gorbak, I'm not a stax expert, I'm just relaying what cards I've encountered that have made things challenging for me. Usually your focus is to hit your opponents hands and resources as well as their board-state. Alesha likes playing a lot of cheap spells, so those limited land-wipe cards would probably hurt a lot on your opponents without hurting you. It's important to know what disadvantages your deck can get away with more than your opponents decks and then once you figure that out you try to exploit it as much as possible.
A lot of stax decks I go against will usually stick to a synergy that really goes out of control if left unchecked. Synergies like: Contamination + Bitterblossom. Smokestack + Assemble the Legion. Chains of Mephistopheles + Anvil of Bogardan. Winter Orb + Stoneshaker Shaman. Desecration Elemental + Assault Suit. Rule of Law + Knowledge Pool. Creating any of the following locks can lead to the table easily losing the game if not answered appropriately. Getting those nasty locks usually requires lots of tutor effects like Demonic Tutor to maintain consistency.

Needs more stax. Cards you may want to consider: Hanna's Custody, Thorn of Amethyst, Ethersworn Canonist, Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, Fall of the Thran, Global Ruin, Keldon Firebombers, Smallpox, Slaughter the Strong, Stronghold Rats, Necrogen Mists, Ensnaring Bridge, War's Toll, Tectonic Instability, Rite of the Raging Storm, Tainted AEther, Fulminator Mage, Divine Presence, Storage Matrix, Grave Pact, Bottomless Pit, Stoneshaker Shaman, Aura of Silence, Mesmeric Orb, Bounty Agent, Noetic Scales.
Not every one of these cards need to be included. Pick which ones you feel may suit you best as these are some of the best stax cards in your colors to choose from.
