Definitive version of my Marchesa, the Black Rose commander build. (As of December 2024) Note: this is an optimised decklist for casual play, not cEDH. The main goal of the deck is to establish an engine, using Marchesa's ability to return creatures to the battlefield to reuse their ETB abilities and gaining value through sac outlets. The deck has two creature type subthemes: Human (with cards like Xathrid necromancer and Voldaren aristocrat) and Wizard (witch Sage of fables). The main strategy for winning is through Blood artist effects, like the artist itself, Zulaport cutthroat, Marionette apprentice and Mayhem devil. Key cards are the 4 humans who always come into play with a +1/+1 counter on them, namely Scorn-blade berserker, Thrill kill assassin, Marionette apprentice and Exava, Rakdos blood witch. They are the best fodder in the deck, especially since they are all humans for the aforementioned synergies. Always try to have Marchesa wear a +1/+1 counter and have a sac outlet on the field to allow protection against removal, particularly exile. In the maybeboard are included four protection spells that are particularli well suited to the deck, if your playgroup is removal-heavy. This deck benefits greatly from playing against multiple opponents, since they will allow one more cycle of value each. The deck also includes two infinite combos, both involving Sage of fables. The first requires Ashnod's altar and Flayer of the hatebound and allows to deal 5 damage for card in the deck to any target (which should result in infinite damage). The second one requires Glen Elendra archmage or Puppetteer clique and any sac outlet, as the ability on Sage of fables will nullify the -1/-1 counter for persist, allowing for an infinite number of sacrifices. In combo with a Blood artist effect or Goblin bombardment, it would result in infinite damage. Both of these combos were not intended and are the result of interaction between pieces that would already be included in the deck in the first place. Ask your playgroup if they are ok with you playing infinite combos. I hope you will have fun playing this deck.
