I would also like to say I may be willing to work out a trade for Karn if anyone wants to work out a deal for ~$55 worth of cards off Star City, Card Kingdom, or TCG Player, but that's another story, Otherwise I can look at binders.

MagicalHacker on Official MagicalHacker Commander List Update …

Welcome, fellow planeswalkers, to the Official MagicalHacker Commander List Update (OMCLU) for Commander 2017!

If you are not aware, I have had lists for commander staple effects for a very long time now, and I have been updating them as new sets are released. Unlike other staple lists that showcase individual cards that are commonly used (which http://edhrec.com does better anyways), I instead use these lists to show all cards in categories that have proven to be advantageous to have in Commander. More specifically, these categories of staples are ones that answer certain problems a deck could be experiencing, such as having a hard time against control, not being able to play cards in hand quickly enough, or dealing with problematic commanders. (The full list can be found on my profile.)

The purpose of this thread is three-fold:

  1. To raise public awareness for these lists (which I know to be extremely useful since I use them more than literally any other resource online when building decks), especially for the newest additions to them.

  2. To receive feedback about C17 cards that should be added/removed from lists, as I am only human and make mistakes too.

  3. To receive feedback about older cards that should be added/removed from lists. I'm surprised how many times I miss cards when they should be included.

Commander 2017 is up on Gatherer, so its now time to go through the process of updating my decks! (Sorry for the delay, I was working through some technical difficulties.)

Thanks for the comment, DraxLord.

The main reason I created this deck was because of seeing players, especially at card shops, who play the game as if their self-worth depended on them winning, taking the game much too seriously, and not seeming to enjoy any of it.

Although I have eleven EDH decks, and I play this one fairly rarely, just sitting down and placing the purple hippo into the Command Zone seems to lighten up the whole table immediately. Even the grinders have to smile.

Another thing I don't think I've talked about yet in the comment stream is how inexpensively the bones of this deck can be put together. According to the TCG Player price over on the right, this deck cost about $180.00 to build, but it can be built much cheaper if you take out just a few cards like, Aluren, Anvil of Bogardan and/or Mikokoro, Center of the Sea. Most of the other cards are 2-3 dollars or less, with many being under a dollar. Mikokoro could just be replaced with a basic, and the others could be replaced with some of the other cool group-hug cards that are out there, like Well of Knowledge, Arcane Melee, Unifying Theory, etc.

Thanks for the suggestions, Errast.

I already have Font of Mythos in the deck, great card.

You're right, Gaea's Herald is a little too much of a control card. Normally I enjoy hosing Blue, but not in this deck.

I've actually had both Unifying Theory and Horn of Plenty in this deck, but after playing with them for a while, I had to take them out. Turns out that I'm giving everyone so much card draw for free, nobody want to pay for it. It's a case of something sounding great in theory, but didn't work out when played.

Eye of the Storm is such a chaos card, and is so annoying that I think everyone would kill me just for playing the damned thing. I'd better leave that one alone.

So a couple cards that seems good in the deck...

Font of Mythos is another "Everyone draw some more" effects, and is relatively cheap mana-wise at 4.

Gaea's Herald could technically be called a control card, although letting everyone play their creatures unmolested seems fine for the most part.

Unifying Theory is a weird, wonky sort of Rhystic Study for everyone at the table.

Horn of Plenty is another wonky Rhystic Study effect, but may be too high of a mana-cost for you, at 6.

Eye of the Storm is my final suggestion, because really... Just look at this stupid thing. It wheels, it deals, everyone gets to cast everything for free, and it's just too dumb to not consider at the very least (Although maybe don't play it against the Melek, Izzet Paragon deck).

Hey Tea. Here's my group hug deck, if you want to check it out. Some very specific suggestions if you're interested:

Awakening

Dictate of Karametra

Unifying Theory

Upwelling

Vernal Equinox

Those are all enchantments, because my personal feeling is that if you're going to play a Sphere of Safety, you should be playing a minimum of 20 enchantments in your deck to make drawing them consistent enough to make Sphere worth it. Otherwise, I'd just play Propaganda and Ghostly Prison. But that's just me.

Truce -Very flavorful

Vision Skeins -Everybody wants more draw!

Prosperity -MORE DRAW, MORE DRAW

Minds Aglow -DRRRARAARRAAAAAWWWW

Some instants and sorceries. I like them in place of things like Pulse of the Grid and Urban Evolution, which only help you and not anyone else.

Helm of Awakening is a really great artifact for GH decks.

Braids, Conjurer Adept

Walking Archive

Tempting Wurm

Just a few creatures I thought you'd like to look into. Take your time reading the Archive, it's one I had to read through like four times to totally understand. They're a few things that I would personally be playing over Deathless Angel and Squallmonger, but again, these are all personal preference things. And there's a lot more in the decklist I linked above.
