Mournwhelk

Creature — Elemental

When Mournwhelk enters the battlefield, target player discards two cards.

Evoke (3)(Black) (You may play this spell for its evoke cost. If you do, it's sacrificed when it enters the battlefield.)

3> Ahhh I've been wanting to play with Obosh, the Preypiercer and Angrath's Marauders - glad you found a spot for them. While you're at it, you could also consider other "damage doublers" such as Wound Reflection and Fiendish Duo. I've thought about a Vial-Smasher deck with a White partner just to add Gisela, Blade of Goldnight.

3> I see you enjoy big monsters and X-spells here. Oh to be young again... but seriously, this seems like a good deck to play them in as you would be rewarded. Instants are your friend, as you can Smash Vials on everyone's turn! No Comet Storm?

3> I would be worried about Vial-Smasher getting nuked from orbit as soon as your turn passes and it's no longer indestructible. You'll find Heroic Intervention and Slippery Bogbonder will help with targeted Exile removal. You already have Destroy and Sacrifice covered I see.

3> I see some cost-reduced and commander-free spells in there, but you have a limited suite. While doing research for my thoughts on Vial-Smasher, I found the following might be helpful - list is just copy/paste, so it will include some White and/or Blue cards:

Also if you want some removal and disruption, Evoke cards like Shriekmaw and Mournwhelk will give you twice the etb triggers.

You won't feel so sexy when I use it and Heartstone to cheat out Herald of Leshrac and Mournwhelk for no mana, KittenPetter!

I've found Magus of the Abyss to be decent for crowd control and to flip lili. Also a lot cheaper than The Abyss, the card it was based on. Also an evoked Shriekmaw can flip lili. So can the pother black evoke creatures ( Offalsnout/Mournwhelk)

GolgariGravePact Thank for the Mournwhelk suggestion. After some tries I just officially added it to the deck and he's here to stay.

What about Mournwhelk? If you evoke it before reanimating it, that means that they have to deal with it with four less cards, and with the evoke cost it's easy to get into the graveyard.

Hey Cony, thanks for the suggestions.

Augur of Skullsis a definitely a better card than Mournwhelk in a vacuum, but is capable of bigger plays by forcing a discard-4 while sticking around as a reasonable 3/3. On the other hand, Augur is much better when cast by itself, so some combination of the two is probably what I'll go with.

I have no argument for your other card suggestions. Barrens is a strict upgrade and Angler is powerful enough it can be fit in without much synergy needed.

As for the change in shell, you might be on to something but that might be a challenge for another deck. This is really a mid-rangey Orzhov deck splashing blue just because Mulldrifter is an insane card. Something like Condescend could potentially work with the mana but doesn't seem all that great even coming from the sideboard.

Yep. Grinning Ignus is a great combo engine, but it needs a supportive shell. I can see the deck going a very different direction with a black control shell using Mournwhelk and some janky Grinning Ignus combo (Although the deck already feels pretty janky, especially when you're playing against something OP like Delver).
