Primeval Protector Discussion

Pikobyte on Imoti

My deck can play like half the deck by turn 6-7, sometimes turn 5 and draw an additional 20-30 cards. Maybe take a look at my list. I can highly recommend cards like Ghalta, Primal Hunger , The Great Henge , Primeval Protector or Treasure Cruise . They reduce their own cost and still give you that big cascade trigger. Also Great Whale and Palinchron are nice. A free cascade trigger or with a card like Nyxbloom Ancient or Zendikar Resurgent they even produce mana. You should also try to fit a bit more ramp into the deck, so you can keep up with faster decks.

Theres a whole lot you can improve here, some stuff is budget and some is not. Cards like Dig Through Time , Primeval Protector and Treasure Cruise are great here since you can cast them for cheap and still get a high cascade trigger, they’re also budget friendly. Stuff like Ghalta, Primal Hunger and The Great Henge are even better but not budget friendly anymore. I made a more optimized and less budget version of Imoti and it does crazy stuff. Like drawing and playing like 70 cards a turn and putting 25 lands into play untapped the same turn. By turn 5-6 your board looks absolutely nuts. Feel free to take a look if you’re looking for new toys. There are good budget cards but also more expensive stuff

Nice list to start with. You should consider cards that reduce their cost like Ghalta, Primal Hunger , Dig Through Time , Treasure Cruise or Primeval Protector . Playing a Ghalta for just 2 and still getting a 12 mana cascade trigger is just nuts. The Great Henge is like super good for that reason, it also draws you cards and ramps. Omniscience does really well in Imoti and Aetherflux Reservoir can easily get you 150+ life a turn because of its special interaction with cascade. Also some additional card draw like Thunderous Snapper has proven to be awesome. My Imoti can easily draw and play like 50-70 cards a turn and put 25 lands into play in one turn, with a few changes yours could really get to the next level :-)

carpecanum on Counter style ninjutsu (I\Iinjutsu for short)

I would take out 1 of each basic lands plus two other cards and replace with a Dimir Signet, Golgari Signet, Simic Signet and a Sol Ring. Maybe one more mana rock or Gyre Sage. That should put your mana at 40% of your deck.

Clones are fun with ninjas. Nice cheap Clone or anything with that ability can copy the most powerful creature on the board and then ninjitsu it back to recast once you see a better creature hit the board.

Primeval Protector comes out cheap.

I use Primeval Protector because he throws out counters I can proliferate and because he usually comes out for only 3 or 4 mana. I thought you would be looking for counters because of the nostalgic enchantment.

3> Ahhh I've been wanting to play with Obosh, the Preypiercer and Angrath's Marauders - glad you found a spot for them. While you're at it, you could also consider other "damage doublers" such as Wound Reflection and Fiendish Duo. I've thought about a Vial-Smasher deck with a White partner just to add Gisela, Blade of Goldnight.

3> I see you enjoy big monsters and X-spells here. Oh to be young again... but seriously, this seems like a good deck to play them in as you would be rewarded. Instants are your friend, as you can Smash Vials on everyone's turn! No Comet Storm?

3> I would be worried about Vial-Smasher getting nuked from orbit as soon as your turn passes and it's no longer indestructible. You'll find Heroic Intervention and Slippery Bogbonder will help with targeted Exile removal. You already have Destroy and Sacrifice covered I see.

3> I see some cost-reduced and commander-free spells in there, but you have a limited suite. While doing research for my thoughts on Vial-Smasher, I found the following might be helpful - list is just copy/paste, so it will include some White and/or Blue cards:

Thanks for the suggestions, carpecanum!

I'll definitely consider Illusionist's Bracers and Selvala's Stampede. Both look super cool!

I mention Mayael's Aria only because of nostalgia, I'm not particularly interested in trying to use it as a win-con. I know of cards like Mossbridge Troll that could work to win that way, but the first two modes (+1/+1 counters and gaining life) don't seem that impactful.

Shield of the Oversoul could be interesting, but I'd prefer effects like that on creatures with power 5 or greater. For example, I'm considering Spearbreaker Behemoth.

The creatures you mention are big, but I want my creatures to do more than just that. Especially without trample or evasion already tacked on, Primeval Protector and Gigantosaurus are not that exciting. I could see myself using Nessian Boar, though, since it can clear the way for other attackers.

Thanks for your thoughts :)
