The Cauldron of Eternity Discussion

PyroSwardsman on Yuriko Test

The deck is looking pretty good. I like the creature base you have chosen, there are a couple questionable creatures though. Cloudreader Sphinx seems kind of bad in this deck. If you just want a flying scryer, perhaps Sphinx of Foresight, Prognostic Sphinx, Stormwing Entity, or Siani, Eye of the Storm.

Passwall Adept is just not good enough. its too much of a resource drain. Opt is not helpful in this deck since you immediately draw the card after scrying. Cunning Evasion wont do much good I am thinking since most of your creatures wont be blocked anyway.

In my opinion, you need a few less low CMC cards and a few more high CMC that you can use to get Yuriko damage in. For cuts, I would start by looking at any creatures that cost CMC 2/3 that dont provide value other than being unblockable (Invisible Stalker, Vault Skirge (love that card btw). I would then look at replacing sorceries with instants where possible. Darksteel Pendant and Crystal Ball are not good enough in my opinion and are too much of a resource investment unless there is some sort of artifact strategy I am missing. Dimir Keyrune provides interesting utility but is inefficient. Consider Arcane Signet instead or perhaps even Dark Ritual. Thran Dynamo is fairly efficient for cost to mana provided but it seems most of your mana needs are for color. Key to the City is for yuriko after she is out I assume.. I would probably run Aqueous Form instead because it has a scry effect on attack which is pretty desirable.

Here are some cards to consider in not much particular order:

Zhalfirin Void

Moonring Island

Chromatic Orrery (high cmc and provides a lot of mana)

Mission Briefing (can add card to graveyard for delve and recast Brainstorm which is arguably one of the best cards in the deck)

Condescend

Chain of Vapor (way to return a card to hand as well as an opponents card or cards)

Archaeomancer (can get brainstorm back and can be returned to hand with ninjitsu potentially)

Harsh Scrutiny

Shrieking Drake

Archetype of Imagination

Flood of Tears (this is a pet card of mine. You can return a bunch of cheap creatures and then put out something big like a Chromatic Orrery)

Lim-Dul's Vault

Scroll Rack (spendy but so good)

Soothsaying

Spire Owl

Diabolic Vision

Index

Spy Network

Trickery Charm (does multiple things you want)

Beseech the Queen

The Magic Mirror

The Cauldron of Eternity

Deep-Sea Kraken

Avatar of Woe

Void Beckoner

Dead Drop

Tombstalker

Curse of the Cabal

Connive / Concoct

Grozoth (requires you to build around it to be worthwhile but can be good)

Scion of Darkness

Treasure Cruise

3> Ahhh I've been wanting to play with Obosh, the Preypiercer and Angrath's Marauders - glad you found a spot for them. While you're at it, you could also consider other "damage doublers" such as Wound Reflection and Fiendish Duo. I've thought about a Vial-Smasher deck with a White partner just to add Gisela, Blade of Goldnight.

3> I see you enjoy big monsters and X-spells here. Oh to be young again... but seriously, this seems like a good deck to play them in as you would be rewarded. Instants are your friend, as you can Smash Vials on everyone's turn! No Comet Storm?

3> I would be worried about Vial-Smasher getting nuked from orbit as soon as your turn passes and it's no longer indestructible. You'll find Heroic Intervention and Slippery Bogbonder will help with targeted Exile removal. You already have Destroy and Sacrifice covered I see.

3> I see some cost-reduced and commander-free spells in there, but you have a limited suite. While doing research for my thoughts on Vial-Smasher, I found the following might be helpful - list is just copy/paste, so it will include some White and/or Blue cards:

jexicanwrestler I think you misread the cards; this deck runs The Cauldron of Eternity. I don't get it out super often since it becomes useless once it's milled and can sit in my hand for a while due to the base cost. If I continue to run it and don't see incredible performance, I'll probably cut it and put back Reito Lantern.

With so many Rat Colony, you could add Thrumming Stone - its not so cheap, but you could get much more rats into play so much faster.
Mortuary / Haunted Crossroads - to put back rats that died back on top of your library. Some card draw like Necropotence, Phyrexian Arena, Dark Prophecy as enchantment card draws. Skullclamp since Rat Colony is 1 life anyway; Village Rites instant card draw for only for 2 cards.
Ayara, First of Locthwain - Ayara works really well with Rat Colony decks for card draw and pinging opponents down :D
Rise of the Dark Realms - to bring all the rats into play :D
Grimoire of the Dead - another big reanimator artifact.
The Cauldron of Eternity - could be pretty interesting in a deck full of creatures.
Victimize - sacrifice 1 rat to bring 2 rats back into play? Sounds like a good deal! :D Also, Blood for Bones is pretty decent.
Plunge into Darkness - sacrifice rats to gain some life, would work well with Mortuary/Haunted Crossroads to get rats out of the graveyard later.
Crypt of Agadeem, Songs of the Damned - could both give you a lot of mana into some card draws and/or more rats.
Cavern of Souls - probably not so needed, just a luxury to make your rats uncounterable.
Nightmare Shepherd - if you wont care about reanimating rats and your graveyard, why not make 1/1 rat colony token anytime when original Rat Colony dies? Sounds like fun! :D
Mortal Combat - not a fan of this card, but could be an easy win with so many cheap rats.
Dawn of the Dead - could be also pretty decent reanimator to bring a creature back, give it haste a swing for big damage.

Awesome suggestions, I looked at everything you suggested and started to make some modifications and going to play test things quickly here. Elvish Piper looks like a possible game changer for sneaking out some fatties.

Your second commend was quite accurate, on par with your first, there were some cards that I was eyeing again as I play tested this morning that just didn't feel like they fit what I was going for with this. Tortured Existence and The Cauldron of Eternity were on my radar to be replaced. Rapacious One not sure how I never saw that one?!

really appreciate you taking the time to offer up some of your views on things, I'm thinking Crucible of Worlds could also help if I'm playing Fetch lands that I could reuse.

Also forgot to add in that The Cauldron of Eternity and Tortured Existence don't add too much to your tratedy, since it's hard to reanimate your biggest eldrazi (Mainly og Kozilek and Ulamog) since they cant technically hit the graveyard. Bitterblossom and Temple of the False God also Don't push your plan forward, and might be better served as a land I mentioned above and a Farseek. Faerie tokens provide nice sac fodder but you're already getting that from your eldrazi tokens.

Saw this in the Help! section and decided to help.

Some suggestions: The Cauldron of Eternity, Connive / Concoct, more ramp cards. Creatures you control probably aren't going to be dying, so Cauldron will be pretty good bringing back big cards, thus comboing with Terror of the Peaks.

By the way, I have a pretty decent combo/deck idea for M21 standard that you are free to make a deck with and post it - a Radha, Heart of Keld land deck. (I have a feeling that Zendikar Rising is going to have the Landfall mechanic, so if it does, this deck will be awesome.) Here are the main cards required for it: 4x Radha, Heart of Keld, 4x Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath, 4x Risen Reef, 2x Cavalier of Thorns, 4x Growth Spiral, any number of Embercleaves.
