Tuesday Standard (4-0)

thelemonaids, 8 years ago

Been busy the past Tuesdays/Fridays for over a month, but figured I had one last chance to play this deck in its current form before rotation. Round 1: Bant Company Opponent was mana screwed game one, game two was a very grindy game (I had both versions of Avacyn on the field at one point). Eventually got there. 1-0 Round 2: Bant Company Don't remember in which order we won our first two games. Game three, a mix of Ayli, and flashing in a second Avacyn right after the first one transformed. At one point, my opponent resolved a Thought-Knot Seer, revealing Gideon, Linvala, Avacyn, Tragic Arrogance, Ruinous Path and Languish. A clutch Hallowed Moonlight was key here. 2-1 Round 3: Sultai Emerge Game one was lost to chaining Deep-Fiends and Kozilek's Return. Game two was won with Gideons. Got there in a similar fashion game three. I'm pretty sure this match-up depends on K-Return being in their graveyard or not. 3-0. Round 4: U/R Control Lost game one to Ulamog and Deep-Fiend (had some misplays on my part). Got there game two with a turn 4/5 Gideon. Game three was very long, drawing only 6 lands total. Fought through an Ulamog with Declaration in Stone, then eventually Gideon won it. Two Thraben Inspectors did ~10-11 points of damage. 4-0.

Ok if I wasn't sure Kalitas was good before I REALLY believe he's good now. I killed all of my opponents dudes and had a mess of zombies left over. Crazy good!

3-1 eyyy

Took this to FNM as a last minute change and had a blast!

Round 1: 2-1 v.s. GW/5-color superfriends

Cast Decimator all 3 games. Game one he outvalued me with an early Gisela, the Broken Blade + Arlinn combo, but games 2 and 3 he just got overrun. "Swing all at you." "All at me?" "Yes, all at you."

Round 2: 2-1 v.s. Bant CoCo

Ha-HA! Very happy to have won this matchup. Game one, got killed the usual way. Game two, absolutely smashed in with Decimator and Ulrich, I think. Game three was very close, one Decimator-for-the-win got Summary Dismissal'd, but I had two Tireless Trackers getting massive and a ground board-stall.

Ended up Arlinn Kord bolting a Thalia to make Peas n Carrots come in untapped (in case of another Summary Dismissal), then casting 2nd Decimator to thunder on in.

Round 3: 1-2 v.s. Sultai Control

Poor dice roll, poor draws (the only mulligans all night) and a difficult matchup to face with Jace and Liliana. Game 1 I got Languish'd four times thanks to Jace flashback...

Game 2, Display of Dominance was a blowout, but game 3 I got stuck on lands after a mulligan. I was pretty behind by turn 5 and had to play into Languish that I figured he probably had--he ran 4 copies--because I'd win the next turn if he didn't. Guess what?

Round 4: 2-1 v.s. Hellbent Vamps

Okay. Technically I lost this match 1-2, but I'm calling it 2-1 because I lost the game, my deck didn't lose the game. I forgot to flashback a Kozilek's Return for the clean, easy, nothing-to-do-about it, right-in-front-of-me win. But it was late, I was tired, and the match meant nothing since top 4 was decided already, so I'm not upset.

This deck was SO FUN TO PLAY. Everyone got excited about the pig, I got excited about the pig, it was fun.

Changes n' stuff

Erratic Portal -> Skull Collector

Portal is ok, and works on some other stuff... A 1 mana less portal on a stick seems decent enough for a spot.

I'm adding 2 of Thalia, Heretic Cathar to the deck right now, (frogkill45) I might remove her in a future update but i will need to print her and test it with my friends first.

Kaladesh - RIP Tarkir/Origins

ccmaci, 8 years ago

So in two weeks the new set Kaladesh will come out, if that's the case then sadly not all the cards listed here will be standard legal...

I'm going to have to replace some cards :/

But don't worry, not ALL the cards are being taken out, some of them don't really dent the deck at all. This is the listing of the RIP in pepperoni cards that will be going to the graveyard of standard legalness... ;-;

Not there is a little hope for replacing these cards, such as replacing the Ultimate Price with Grasp of Darkness and replace Liliana, Heretical Healer  Flip with Liliana, the Last Hope or maybe even Chandra, Torch of Defiance. I might even replace Transgress the Mind with Collective Brutality just because control is becoming a thing again and the lovely B/W Spirits community just ruins games for me xD

The cards listed here are cards that will may be added to the main/sideboard:

Chandra, Torch of Defiance - Mainboard, no question about it, next xD

Bomat Courier - Most likely going to be a sideboard card, its ability works best when you don't have any cards in hand. Works best like Asylum Visitor except I don't lost life and gain more than 1 card. Yes, it is risky, but with it also fueling madness for only one it may work pretty well.

Unlicensed Disintegration - Will work best with Bomat Courier on the battlefield, just kinda sad that the card won't have it's second ability activate without that card. Bomat Courier will be the only artifact in the deck (unless Revolt adds any good cards), so activating the 3 damage ability would be very difficult. Hopefully it will be replaced with another removal spell soon.

Collective Brutality - Would be replacing Transgress the Mind in the sideboard, need to be able to deal with stupid control decks.

Hopefully these new/removed cards don' mess up the deck. If they do, then rip the B/R Vamps dream xD. That's going to be it for me today.

Night ppls, Cc out :3

Kaladesh Fully Spoiled

Hobbez9186, 8 years ago

So I've excitedly added all the cards and quantities I'm interested in from the upcoming Kaladesh release to the Maybeboard now that all of the cards have been spoiled. I'll be overhauling the sideboard with the extra cards that don't fit into the main, I hadn't ever completed the sideboard in paper because I figured that I would be updating it with the launch and didn't want to waste the money. I'm the most excited for Kambal and the Gearsmith as upgrades to Blood-Cursed Knight and Drana's Emissary. I know the Emissary doesn't rotate out, but the Gearsmith should work out better in the long run for me. The Gearhulk is more expensive off the bat than I thought it would be so I probably won't add them in paper right away unless I get one or two in the prerelease. Most of the spells will be added to sideboard, I'm actually very pleased with the upgrades and changes. Fumigate will be a great upgrade to Descend Upon the Sinful. Loses points for flavor but its a better card. I rarely have the Delirium and don't really have a good way to change that. For one less mana and a ton of lifegain added on top it'll be a great board wipe I wouldn't hesitate to use, especially since it doesn't exile so I can bring things back. I'm very much looking forward to seeing these changes in action :)

A bit of New

ArchFline, 8 years ago

The deck has taken on a bit of blue to facilitate Paradox Haze synergy, with this change the land package has been updated and we say goodbye to Contagion Engine.

Also thinking about taking out 2 Steam Ventsfoil and the Polluted Deltas for 2 Hallowed Fountainfoils and Flooded Strand as a mana base for Jeskai Ascendancy.

Actually did some work on my SB (thanks for the suggestion). Switched out Spell Pierce for Essence Scatter as creatures seem to be a bigger issue than no creatures (might end up sideboarding spell pierce). Going to be playtesting Manamorphose and Assault Strobe in place of Serum Visions and Mutagenic Growth. Also goin to try switching out the Shivan Reefs and 1 ea of Lightning Bolt and Gitaxian Probe for Seachrome Coast and 2 Jeskai Ascendancys to see how that runs.

Updated Deck for Kalidash

KaiserWilhelm, 8 years ago

So I have reviewed all the cards from Kalidash, now the full set is released and updated the deck according to what I believe the Meta will be. This is subject to change after testing, but I will change it if necessary.

  • 2 Kalitas, Trator of Ghet - As pointed out in the comments, Kalitas does not really synergise with the deck. Thus he has been removed for + 2 Noxious Gearhulk as this provides removal upon entry and gains us the life Kalitas probably would. He is also a possible flicker target which is nice.

  • 2 Thalia, Heritic Cathar - Thalia was good, and all but really did not do much against most decks as we are not swinging into them anyway. Thus, I have replaced her with + 2 Kambal, Consul of Allocation as this discourages our opponents playing spells and provides us with survivability.

  • 4 Forsaken Sanctuary - Replaced with the strictly better Concealed Courtyard.

Sideboard updates removed Archangel Avacyn  Flip for Fumigate. 2 Collective Effort and a Declaration in Stone for Lost Legacy which lets us remove any threats from our opponents deck. 3 Grasp of Darkness were replaced with Fragmentize to stop nasty artifact shenanigans.

I may change the deck again depending on how testing goes, but I think this transitions it well into rotation

Conspiracy update, land reshuffle!

FunkyGraham, 8 years ago

In the last several months, many unmarked, unnoticed mana-base changes occured, which resulted in the shifting around of various basic lands and their proportions. Now all the basics are foil, and updated to their true colors.

Big changes have happened since now we have come to the removal of very perennial bombs. I found some very displeasing nonbos with my original build, centered around Drogskol Reaver. It was recently brought to my attention that if I comboed off with Sanguine Bond and Exquisite Blood with a Reaver on the field, I would deck myself. This is unacceptable, especially in an Ad Nauseam situation.

The workaround for that was to kill my own creature before the combo went off. I don't like killing my own creatures, because they are hurting me. It's not worth having in a deck if it can kill me and it's downside outweighs its upside. Plus it was a top-curve speed bump for Ad Nauseam, so I have removed Grabby-ghost from the deck forever.

I also found that I really dislike the complexity and mental-processing hog that is Umezawa's Jitte. It's too aggressive, too expensive, and only truly useful in conjunction with Drogskol, since I can get tons of counters and then immediately draw off of those counters, or use them to kill off Drogskol when the time comes. But then I'd have to rely on the Jitte not getting killed, which it would. I found the combo to be too parasitic and not worth the mana or the life.

In its place, came Grim Monolith. It fulfills the early mana-ramp of something like Mana Crypt without the cheapness or the life-loss, and the deck is slow enough to accommodate for the downside. This deck loves brown artifacts of great power and distinction, whereas the more lesser artifacts are all modern-bordered. It can be fetched AND untapped by Tezzeret, making it a premier fetch choice over the simpler Talismans, which are content to merely be drawn. A turn 3 Tezzeret with and from an active Monolith is a fun thing, and I found its inclusion worthy.

In the testing and sorting, I found that Sanctum Prelate was a good choice upon its release, and the number named could be adjusted for each situation. The go-to number would be four, to stop Wraths and good Planeswalkers, as it only stops two of your own spells. If you have Rite of Replication or No Mercy in your hand, another number can be chosen. If you can Replicate it with the kicker, you can make five more that name five other numbers, locking opponents out of the spell-game completely! If you can Mirrorpool that Rite, you can lock out all spells from the game. Of course, you could just clone it via other means, like Sakashima, to make sure you can keep the range of spells safe. It's a beautiful card, that fits well with the other black women in the deck.

That's it for this update! The deck is looking great.

Edit: It feels... wrong somehow. Without Drogskol, there's no consistency of bombs, nothing important for Grand Arbiter Augustin IV to ramp into, nothing to refill my hand and buff my life. I can always non-violently remove my own creature if it comes to it. I can win easily enough without the combo. I've tried the deck without Drogskol, and it's not strong enough. I don't draw enough; I draw nothing but weakness.

I've tried other card-removals that feel inferior too, but they change the feel of the deck dramatically with their absence. Without Mana Confluence, the land base feels too stocky and rigid. Without Debtors' Knell there isn't enough white-black. Without Banishing Light there isn't enough removal, and the potential with Sun Titan and Starfield of Nyx is lost. The deck refuses to improve itself, or suffer the loss of any of its components. It rejected Jitte, and it rejected Mana Crypt. It rejected Mom! How will I improve? I can't go back on Grim Monolith since it fits so well, and has about the least awkward of placements it could have among my decks.

I guess you should just be very conservative with Ad Nauseam. Don't play it unless you're sure to go off. Don't fetch for it above Beacon of Immortality or Rite of Replication, as that alone can create a combo big enough to kill someone just with Sanguine Bond.

I guess a Swamp will come out. It's not very useful unless you have some sort of black card in opening, and Mana Confluence is just better in all other situations. I can already fetch for so many things, and I've got Urborg, too. Yeah, Swamp comes out.
