Took what little advice I've gotten. I don't want to go just copy every other Ghave deck out there. I do want some interesting idea's though. Look forward to seeing those cruel ideas know are out there.

FNM 11/1 2-1

Aerokid, 11 years ago

First few games went smooth with Ethereal Armor making many appearances. 3rd round was a pair down against Azorius control, and Verdict and Celestial Flare got there.

Major Update!

mrbloo1848, 11 years ago

Made a huge change in the main and side! I also updated the description accordingly. Check 'em out! The explanation for the change is that I've been testing and playing a lot and the deck where it stood didn't feel right. Therefore, I am making some changes to see if things improve.

#7 FNM Nov 1 2013

Oddjob9, 11 years ago

I'm not pleased to report I went 3-2 with this deck this FNM, Finishing 7th place and receiving 3 packs, from which I pulled Anthousa, Setessan Hero Soldier of the Pantheon, and Bow of Nylea

Round 1 vs U/W Azorius Control. I lost 0-2, I felt like I was playing my own control deck. I had no way to protect my creatures from Essence Scatter and Celestial Flare, and in game 1 I made the mistake of playing 2 Favored Hoplite and got them both sucked into a Detention Sphere. I didn't draw very good hands either time, vs control is a race against the clock for this deck. The only thing my Gods Willing and Mizzium Skin saved me from was Azorius Charm

Round 2 vs Gruul aggro. I get my creatures and buffs going way too fast for him to get out his big creatures, he has no choice but to block with his mana dorks or die, Sylvan Caryatid tries to block a 1/2 Favored Hoplite, Swift Justice dropped on the hoplite makes him 3/3, from there it was downhill for him very quickly. 2-0

Round 3 vs RUW American Control. He gets off a Syncopate here and a Dissolve there, gets out a Jace, Architect of Thought one game, but both games I hit him so hard and fast that he couldn't get it going. His attempted removals were Azorius Charm and Anger of the Gods, both of which I survived with Mizzium Skin and Gods Willing, won both games within 6 turns. 2-0

Round 4 vs Mono Black devotion. Pack Rat, Underworld Connections, and Crypt Ghastfoil were all that ever hit the board for this opponent. Both games I won within 7 turns, both games his Doom Blade and Ultimate Price removals got countered, I sideboarded in +2 Mizzium Skin in place of 2 Triton Tactics and easily countered all attempts to remove my creatures, which was rad. 2-0

Round 5 vs Mono red with a splash of green. A re-match of last FNM finals, I seem to always meet this guy in game 5 when I'm on a winning streak. He's a good player who always brings a sick deck. This is the match I'm still kicking myself about to this moment. I had it in my hands, I made 2 mistakes, game 1 I played Azorius Guildgate turn 3 and should have played it turn 2, so that on turn 3 it'd be available and I could do my usual move of summoning a 2cmc creature and leaving 1 mana available to protect it. When it hit the board I immediately wanted to take it back but this guy is a stickler for the rules so I had to leave it down. It slowed my entire game down and he burned me too fast. Game 2 I brought it to him with furious speed and won very quickly, I sideboarded in 2 Ordeal of Heliod for 2 Ordeal of Thassa because he was able to burn through my life very quickly each game. Game 3 was my bigger mistake. I had him, I had 23 life, he had 7, I knew if I survived his turn, I would win. I had 2 cards in hand, Dauntless Onslaught and Swift Justice, which made me complacent to spend all my mana previous turn because I usually only save it for protection spells, and his Stormbreath Dragon was unblockable by my white creatures anyways so I figured I'd just survive the swing and win soon after.

Nope. This guy blew my mind with what he did. He had a Frostburn Weird, Boros Reckoner, and Stormbreath Dragon on the field. He swings all 3, I have 2 potential blockers, both of which would have been in range of a Mizzium Mortars to kill if they blocked and I couldn't afford to lose either, so I let all 3 of his creatures hit me for 9 dmg. Ok, down to 14 life, no problem. He has 4 lands with 1 being a Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx. He taps all his lands and activates the shrine, then he plays another Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, sacrificng the tapped one. He uses 2 of the mana in his pool to activate that shrine, and now he's got a ton of mana. He plays Domri Rade first, then he plays Fanatic of Mogis. The Fanatic hits me for 8. I'm now at 8 life.

Then he negs his Domri Rade to make his tapped Boros Reckoner fight my Battlewise Hoplite that has 6 +1/+1 counters on it, reflects the damage onto me with the reckoner, and finishes me off from 23 life to 0 in one turn.

What kills me is I had the card in hand to save myself, If I left 1 mana free, I could have Swift Justice my Battlewise Hoplite to net zero the reflect with lifelink. If I had, the next turn I swing for the win, even if he reflected onto the hoplite to kill it, I had a Wingsteed Rider with 2 +1 counters on it, I would have swung with it and Dauntless Onslaught for the win, but nope! I broke my own rule and didn't save any mana to play defensive shenanigans, and I lose an epic game 3. He wins, 2-1, He places #3, I place #7, with an incredible play to remove 23 of my life in one turn. OUCH!

I still have very high confidence in this deck, it could place top 5 every week when played well. Major props to my opponent for finding a way to win on his last turn to survive against my 23 life.

Next week I will likely play a different deck for some variety, but this one will make an appearance again in the next month.

Came 3rd in FNM Won every match but failed against mono red aggro. Got a little land screwed and by the time I got the creatures going he had the devotion to throw out a mogis dealing me like 10 dmg thanks to the 2 ash zealots and boros reckoner's on the field. I hate boros reckoner's :P Decided to remove the experiment ones now, threw in 2 bow of nylea's, nice bit of deathtouch to make my smaller creatures useful, also very useful with pit fight if you attack with them first. Also decided 4 elvish mystics would be much more useful, means turn 2 witchstalkers/boon satyr's are much easier to throw out.

Sleeved up and ready to go

Azure124, 11 years ago

With the Release of the commander 2013 decks i had to make sure my deck was ready to play, Before FNM started i was able to get a few games in with this deck. It did what it was supposed to by blocking out combo decks and draining decks of resources as time went while keeping my hand always filled. Added a maybe board of cards that i think will make an impact if i can get a hold of them, more suggestions needed

top 8

MrDaBucket, 11 years ago

Got 5th last night (due to tiebreaker. 2-5th place all went 4-1). There was no Mono Blue in my meta, so my fears of that are gone. 1st round 2-1 vs Golgari Control 2nd round 2-0 vs Pack Rats 3rd round 2-1 vs Izzet control 4th round 2-0 vs Mono Blue Control 5th round 2-0 vs Rakdos Aggro Esper Control was there like crazy, Mono Black Devotion (with white-splashed or blue-splashed variants), and Golgari Control. I ended up getting 2 Burning Earths before the tournament started for this reason. My only loss was due to land flooding, and for the rest of the night, I sideboarded one of my Nykthos out to mainboard a Burning Earth. I'm now considering lowering the land count.

First FNM

Robaby, 11 years ago

So i took a sort of down graded version (as i don't quite have all the cards yet) of this deck to FNM on yesterday. It was my first FNM and i didn't know what to expect in terms of standard, or set up really.

So the rounds began and first match up was against Bant control. He was a very experienced player and it seemed like he had counter spells in the triple digits. Game 1 AEtherling to the face after everything i played was controlled away. Game 2 Elspeth, Sun's Champion to the face. So i lost 0-2 pretty quick. 'Shame i don't have those Mistcutter Hydra's for my sideboard yet', i remarked after game two. To which he replied, 'you would have had me then; i can't do shit against those uncounterable, protection from blue'. So maybe next time sir.

Round 2 was against green/white heroic. This player was pretty new to the game but he won game 1 as i think my overconfidence got the better of me and i made some mistakes and he surprised me with a 7/7 pretty early on. Game 2 he mulliganed to 4 and couldn't stop my creatures. Game 3 he made a key blunder that cost him the game (i wasn't willing to let him do something else because it wasn't too bad, as it resulted in us trading creatures, but also because it was a matter of reading the card text). I won 2-1

Round 3 against orzhov enchantments. First game i wasn't prepared and got steamrollered by double digit first strikers thanks to Ethereal Armor. Game 2 i had my Polis Crushers and Naturalize at the ready and was able to keep things in check before i was able to get out the big guns and win. Game 3 we were pushed for time but i had the upper hand when 8 minutes left was called. Then 2 turns later i surpised him with a fused Armed / Dangerous meaning he blocked my Elvish Mystic and my two double strikers on the board swung for lethal. I won 2-1.

Final round against red burn/aggro. Game 1 he never seemed to get the right play, he burnt me a bit with Magma Jet but meanwhile my creatures were dominating. He quickly ran out of cards in his hand and that was game. Game 2 he got off to scary start with Firedrinker Satyr turn one and then dealing me 5 damage turn two with a swing and Lightning Strike. However i was then able to stabilize with double Burning-Tree Emissary into Skarrg Guildmage for a line of defence. H e only mustered 2 creatures and that was that really. I won 2-0.

So all in all the deck performed really well and i got 2 boosters (one of which contained a FOIL Thassa, God of the Sea), obviously there's an issure with control but i think my recent changes will cover it, we'll see next week. Can't wait to get the deck finished.

Lacking in Tact(ics)

nobu_the_bard, 11 years ago

A lot of adjustments for this deck. I'm not sure these are going to work or not, but I need to see how these additions feel to get a sense of them. I'm going to try to strengthen my defense against alpha-strikes and address some problems Stony Silence has caused with this update.

Removed:
Cage of Hands (aura; in practice too expensive despite resuablility)
Debt to the Deathless (sorcery; very strong in multiplayer, but I can't reuse it, and it has a high cost)
Dispeller's Capsule (artifact; Disenchant-type removal, but expensive to use)
Orzhov Cluestone (artifact; mana-fixer, but expensive and secondary ability has been underwhelming)
Well of Lost Dreams (artifact; strong card draw potential, but conditional and expensive to use with extort)

Added:
Crystal Ball (artifact; Thereos pre-release taught me scry is pretty useful even without extra draws)
Darkness (instant; unexpected Holy Day alternative)
Dawn Charm (instant; modular, one mode is Holy Day but it has other uses also)
Kami of False Hope (creature; this guy is basically a reusable Holy Day!)
Return to Dust (instant; like one or two Disenchant stapled together, I prefer it over Dispeller's Capsule)

I like toying around with Salvaging Station but I may need to rely on it less. I've been seeing a lot of Stony Silence and surprise alpha strikes in addition to high-speed Slivers decks. The Holy Day effects are cheap and can be used early, or I can Extort with them later.

I'm a bit sore about taking out Debt to the Deathless though; I had included it as a possible finisher, and have used it as such. I can try to use a combo with Children of Korliss, Vizkopa Guildmage, and Necropotence to end a game abruptly, but with that many moving pieces it's hard to collect them all and fire it off without being disrupted. Luckily Necropotence by its nature can help build the combo. (Greed can also work but is sub-optimal)

Added 2 Lord of the Void, cut 1 Shadowborn Demon and 1 Gray Merchant of Asphodel as well as added Lord of the Void to the story. Thanks for the comments guys!

FNM 11/01/2013 6th out of 22

Rasta_Viking29, 11 years ago

It was the smallest standard group I've seen at the shop. Went 2-1-1 and ended placing 6th out 22 players. I ended up dropping Master of Cruelties for +1x AEtherling +1x Ral Zarek before the night started.

Round 1 vs Mono-Black 1-1-1

Won the first game with AEtherling. Lost the 2nd game to Abhorrent Overlord hitting for 8 devotion, could not draw an Anger of the Gods Game three we ran out of time and ended on the last turn with me at 18 life and him at 2, but it goes down as a tie.

Round 2 vs W/g Aggro 2-1

First game was won by Frostburn Weird and rakdos return. Game 2 he got a great hand was able to overwhelm me. Game 3 I was able to stabilize at 6 life. Ashiok was able to put a Banisher Priest into play and remove Archangel of Thune. Finished him off with his Fleecemane Lion and priest.

Round 3 vs B/W/G Midrange 0-2

I had numerous play mistakes in this match. Just a solid deck that was based around Voice of Resurgence, Blood Baron of Vizkopa, and reaper of the wild. I need to analyze this match up some more.

Round 4 vs Esper control 2-1

Game 1 went to Esper with a Blood Baron of Vizkopa. Game 2 was won with AEtherling. We got started on game 3 with 9 mins left and I was worried we would end up in a draw. He had milled me 21 cards with Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver I had a Jace, Architect of Thought with 2 counters and Frostburn Weird. Last turn of the game I had him at 7 life and swung with a pumped weird and resolved Ral Zarek and bolt his face. Fun win.

added side board

mukas999, 11 years ago

The deck is doing totally awesome. It is like the rakdos aggro heroic decks, but the Orzhov Charm can just be absurd. That card alone makes this deck able to function, as the usual getting 2 for 1 all day doesnt get to happen.

Not sure what to make my sideboard, as I havent found any bad match ups yet, probs the usual 2x Pithing Needle for Esper, 2x Yoked Ox for RDW and maybe a 2x Dark Betrayal for mono black, and another 1x Doom Blade for Boros Reckoners or Master of Wavesfoil or what ever. Maybe a 2 of Renounce the Guilds for Orzhov midrange? It can deal super well with Obzedat, Ghost Council and Blood Baron of Vizkopa but can also kill some of my guys. I think another Sin Collector is for sure going in, and maybeeeee Glare of Heresy or Duress or Blind Obedience. Dont really know what I could use against GW aggro which basically everyone is playing at my FNM, I guess Glare of Heresy is good against Voice of Resurgence.
