FNM Update (11/02/13)

Cleric, 11 years ago

I got 2nd in FNM tonight! Lost final match against an Ashiok/Jace Combo that was full of kill spells and counters. Eventually taking your creatures and killing you with them. Also ran pack rat. 1st match was R/W Agro with Ash Zealot, Boros Reckoner, Legion Loyalist. My Gifts of Orzhova lifegain was enough to keep me alive while we rushed eachother 2-1 2nd match was against Mono Green. It was too slow and by the time I had Agent of Fates he had to sac all his creatures and I eventually won. 2-1 3rd match was against a green black deck. Had putrefy and that's really all I saw because I killed him 3rd and 4th turn won in 20 minutes. 2-0 4th match was the Ashiok/Jace combo. I did pretty good at the start, then the counter spells and control was too much for me to keep creatures out while he stole mine and eventually killed me with them. 2nd round I got color screwed. 0-2 for 2nd place. He's a fantastic player, always a challenge. Deck updates, putting another Ajani in, and I want to add my 4th Deviant Glee back in to secure my turn 3 win more.

1 - Wodar Reaper of the Wilds - Pick 1 by Wodar Artisan's Sorrow Destructive Revelry Flamespeaker Adept - Pick 3 by Absinthman Asphodel Wanderer Breaching Hippocamp Gods Willing - Pick 2 by Deco_y Leafcrown Dryad Nessian Courser Ray of Dissolution Silent Artisan Time to Feed Titan's Strength Vaporkin Plains Nothing wrong with that pick; one of a few decent possibilities. Now held by: Euphonatron - Only meh blue cards left, but really all the cards are meh. Vaporkin? 2 - DB345 Bow of Nylea - Pick 2 by Wodar Artisan's Sorrow Fanatic of Mogis - Pick 1 by Deckbuilder345 Karametra Acolyte Vanquish the Foul - Pick 3 by Deco_y Agent of Horizons Battlewise Valor Defend the Hearth Fleetfeather Sandals Guardians of Meletis Ill-Tempered Cyclops Prescient Chimera Ray of Dissolution Vaporkin Mountain Removal IS removal. Now held by: Absinthman - Ill-Tempered Cyclops and Prescient Chimera are both pickable for them; Cyclops seems considerably better. 3 - Gurei Reaper of the Wilds - Pick 1 by GureiSeion Battlewise Hoplite Evangel of Heliod Sealock Monster Breaching Hippocamp Fellhide Minotaur Fleetfeather Sandals Gray Merchant of Asphodel - Pick 3 by Wodar Ill-Tempered Cyclops Prescient Chimera Scholar of Athreos Silent Artisan Titan's Strength Traveling Philosopher - Pick 2 by Deckbuilder345 Swamp They decide to go the devotion route. Could be good; they're about halfway to where they'd want to be with that. Now held by: Deco_y - Scholar is nice, but so is Evangel; not that their white devotion is great. I'd be tempted to take the Artisan and see if Evangel wheels, though it probably won't, given these groups. 4 - Actiontech Prognostic Sphinx - Pick 1 by Actiontech Burnished Hart - Pick 2 by GureiSeion Nemesis of Mortals Sealock Monster Demolish Ephara's Warden Fellhide Minotaur Fleshmad Steed Griptide Last Breath Satyr Hedonist Scholar of Athreos Scourgemark Spark Jolt - Pick 3 by Deckbuilder345 Island Are they throwing this draft? Do we really think SPARK JOLT isn't going to wheel? Bad first pack, and the second one is off to an even worse start. Now held by: Wodar - Other groups have let Nemesis and Sealock fall to them. AND Griptide. They'd love a bunch of picks from this pack, really. I'd take the Nemesis and be sad I can't make two more picks immediately. 5 - Goody Master of Waves - Pick 2 by Actiontech Arena Athlete Magma Jet - Pick 1 by Goody Warriors' Lesson Cavern Lampad Defend the Hearth Demolish Divine Verdict Guardians of Meletis Leonin Snarecaster Pharika's Cure Prescient Chimera Priest of Iroas Sedge Scorpion - Pick 3 by GureiSeion Plains Fair enough, but I think Cavern Lampad is slightly the better card. Now held by: Deckbuilder345- I mean, they're trying to build red/white, I appreciate that, but man, these are not the best cards. Arena Athlete goes best with their program here, but it already seems like a disaster in progress. #brutalhonesty 6 - Euphonatron Abhorrent Overlord Dissolve - Pick 1 by Euphonatron Peak Eruption Witches' Eye Agent of Horizons - Pick 3 by Actiontech Akroan Crusader Cavalry Pegasus Crackling Triton Defend the Hearth Messenger's Speed Mnemonic Wall Observant Alseid - Pick 2 by Goody Portent of Betrayal Traveler's Amulet Forest Love it. Annoying guy to deal with if you're in the colors for him. Now held by: GureiSeion - They thought they had let go of the Abhorrent Overlord idea, but picking up TWO of them has to be SO tempting. 7 - Absinthman Hero's Downfall Destructive Revelry Destructive Revelry (foil) Phalanx Leader - Pick 1 by Absinthman Thassa's Emissary - Pick 2 by Euphonatron Baleful Eidolon Battlewise Valor - Pick 3 by Goody Benthic Giant Boulderfall Guardians of Meletis Loathsome Catoblepas March of the Returned Omenspeaker Savage Surge Plains Logical. Now held by: Actiontech - Omenspeaker and Benthic Giant are both fine cards in blue. Not much is in green unless you want to take Destructive Revelry, which they could, since they could go red if they want. 8 - Deco_y Abhorrent Overlord - Pick 1 by Deco_y Hunt the Hunter Purphoros's Emissary - Pick 2 by Absinthman Satyr Piper Agent of Horizons Akroan Crusader Crackling Triton Defend the Hearth Gods Willing Gray Merchant of Asphodel Last Breath Messenger's Speed Prescient Chimera (foil) - Pick 3 by Euphonatron Spark Jolt Mountain They're gaining focus and recovering from their somewhat blurry first pack. Now held by: Goody - Akroan Crusader is good, but Gods Willing is BETTER.

Won vs Modern RDW & Affinity

emask, 11 years ago

Played another competitive Modern Affinity deck today (just one game today). Main decked the Ghostly Prison and it made things much easier. Really versatile card (works well against lots of decks). Stopped action on their side of the board right after putting it down--really eases the match-up.

Beat a competitive Modern Red Deck Wins deck today as well (played and won 3 in a row). It played super fast, but having the shrouded Deft Duelist along with the Knight of the Holy Nimbus (removal suckers) really made the match-up pretty manageable. This list runs lots of burn too, so removing their hasty threats is pretty easy. Found most damage I dealt was via creatures.

Played against each of these decks starting on the draw. Figure going second helps me better test the effectiveness of this deck. Haven't completely lost yet, but again, I'm sure it'll come around.

Thanks for checking out the deck!

Ended up taking Aurelia, the Warleader out completely. She's awesome, but far too slow to be of any real benefit. If I drew her, it was either in my opening hand or when I could have used something else. Also, I feel that committing to the WW in her casting cost is just too difficult for this deck to do reliably.

Going to try a build with Purphoros, God of the Forge in place of her and one of the dragons. Added Burning Earth to the sideboard, may ending up removing that if it becomes a significant problem for me.

Round 1 vs. RB aggro (2-1): Anger of the Gods. No other words.

Round 2 vs. UWR control (0-2): A few suboptimal plays on my part, also needed burn to finish it and wasn't able to draw it. Good, close games.

Round 3 vs. UR (2-1): Really interesting deck concept running both devotion to blue and red running Nivmagus Elemental, Frostburn Weird, and Master of Wavesfoil. Keeping him off devotion to either color was an obvious help. I'd like to see that deck develop.

Round 4 vs. BG (2-0). What's worse than having 1 Assemble the Legion on the board? Having 2 Assemble the Legion on the board. I am a horrible person and apologized for this afterwards. (Game 1).

Game 2: Opponent just couldn't stabilize. Chandra did work.

Deck is putting up decent results, becoming more and more consistent, and I'm becoming more confident with it every time I play it. I feel like the board could use some work, but I'm otherwise very happy with it.

A Drop of Blood in Murky Waters

Well, I have C13 now. And that includes Thraximundar (Including the oversized Foil version). So, I shall be going from my pretty fragile, kinda slow Grimgrin, Corpse-Born deck to an ultra fast, extra drawing Thraximundar deck. Still Zombie Tribal, but more of the screaming and sprinting kind rather than the shambling, moaning type.

Bye bye bye comments!

Changing it Up

KnightsBattlecry001, 11 years ago

Switching cards around to see what works better and whatnot. Added in Xathrid Demon for his damage dealing effect, Hellcarver Demon for his ability of letting me play cards for free, and Thraben Doomsayer for token generation. The deck is still gonna be tested and changed up, but like how it works right now. As always any advice on how to make the deck better as well as any +1's are greatly appreciated.

So yeah, the deck has continued to work fine and this is the match review. Round 1 I played against mono green ramps stuff (not the usual devotion to green deck). Game one I played enough creatures and burn to blast through the stuff he put out, and then game two he got mana screwed and I had polukranos and Stormbreath dragon securing the win. (1-0) Round 2 I played against a Gruul aggro midrange deck which I have played against before, in both games one and two I was able to remove enough threats to keep her off of mana and big creatures while swinging in with efficient beaters. (2-0) Round 3 my friend scooped to me because he didn't feel like playing against me with his janky mono red deck he had built 5 minutes before the tournament. It was built out of cards from his box of theros. (3-0) Round 4 I played against mono-black devotion and this was a tough matchup, in game one he secured a whip of Erebos alongside 2 desecration demons and another in hand. Game two I was able to remove the threats with both Domri and Selesnya charm and squeak by with a win. And then game 3 we both mulliganed down to 6 and he didn't draw enough removal and I was able to top deck a Stormbreath dragon for exactly lethal when he had a desecration demon on board alongside whip of Erebos, and another demon in hand. I squeaked by on that round for the (4-0) and 1st. Overall a good showing for the deck and some good testing against some decks I hadn't played against.

First FNM

DrGibbs, 11 years ago

Took it to FNM. Went 2-3. Two of my losses were because I got completely and utterly mana screwed. The third loss was completely legit. I now know I need a few more land, and more ays to deal with planeswalkers and counters. Advice is welcomed!

Tournament at FNM @ GamingETC - 11-1-13

reconaissance, 11 years ago

Round 1:2-1 vs. Dega Control(BRW control). I won game one with a fairly aggressive start and a Brave the Elements for his Anger of the Gods and continued beating him down. I lost game two to two consecutive Anger of the Gods, i basically had a nut draw, three one-drops into a turn three Spear of Heliod, but it was not good enough.

Game three, i won thanks to Burning Earth and his extremely greedy mana.

Round two: Vs. GR Monsters 2-0 I won game one with a slower start but i had the answers to his problems and massive board state of mana dorks, Brave the Elements into Boros Charmfoil ended up finishing him off.

Game two went similair, except he almost killed me, i survived at 3 life, having to Aurelia's Fury for one on his upkeep and finish off the last four with a Boros Charmfoil

Round 3 Vs. URW Control:2-1 I lost game one to a draw of Chandra, Pyromaster against my army of x/1's.

Game two i won due to him having mana issues and me answering each spot removal spell he had with Brave the Elements

Game three i won due to Burning Earth. I just landed 2 threats and rode them to victory.

Round 4 Vs. Mono Red Aggro:2-0 Game one i won against his mul to five without an agressive draw.

Game two i won through his much more aggressive start, but i also had a very good hand, three one-drops and a Spear of Heliod with some other cards to help me get there.

McClair_Bear, 11 years ago

Putting in 2-3 Whip of Erebos. What comes out for them?? Thinking 1x Black Sun's Zenith, then two of the killers, probably 1 Go for the Throat, then either 1 Surgical Extraction or Vampire Nighthawk. Vault Skirge and Phyrexian Obliterator are really the creatures that do the damage.

Played this deck at fnm. Out of the 4 matches I won 2 lost 1 and drew 1. I'm truly in love with this deck it's so great! It can be real quick and when it's not quick it's controlling. 1st match: Junk deck with thoughtseizes, obzedat's and desecration demons. I went 2-1 against this deck mainly cos of master of waves :D 2nd match: Esper Control with ashiok as a mill engine and elspeth and aetherling as the finishers. I drew against this deck but only because the allotated time was up :( Otherwise the 3rd game could've gone either way. But it's not my best match-up. 3rd match: Golgari deck with deathrite, loleth troll, witchstalker and vraska. This is the match I lost 1-2. But the deck didn't go down willingly. 1st game I won by sealing off his vraska and deathrite with my pithing needles. 2nd game I lost cos I was mana-screwed. And 3rd game I lost fair and square. All in all I wasn't dissapointed with the performance. 4th match: Mono-red. I dominated this deck! Tidebinder Mage was the all-star in this matchup tapping down a boros reckoner, ash zealot and chandra's phoenix. The wall of frosts helped out a great deal as well as did the owls btw. This was probably my best match-up of that night Conclusion: I probably need 1 more master of waves for consistency and see if I can get my hands on a couple of jace, archtect of thoughts and replacing the 2 memory adepts. Well that's about it I guess.

Some Changes

ckdude, 11 years ago

I have decided to play with Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver with a different mentality. I am going to try using her for the control matchup even though my first thoughts were that she would be quite strong in the creature matchups. I am going to mainboard two Thoughtseize instead. I'm still scared of Red Deck Wins though. I think Ashiok is still good in the Red Deck Wins matchup.
