Once you go black you never go back

mtgplayer100, 7 years ago

Since storm is getting bigger, while eldrazi is getting smaller, i've chanced to black, so we have Collective Brutality, which also makes us better against burn.

Deck update!

MalcolmTent, 7 years ago

1. Replaced Arcanis for Time Spiral - Less colour intensive, fragile and slow. In testing, Spiral draws more cards and gives me an efficient turn. There's even potential for copying it in future updates 2. Replaced Diochan for Monastery Mentor - Diochan's a cute political card, however; the deck could use some aggro and a few of my favourites (Docent/Locust God) are already in the list. Perhaps a control/enchantment shell with token support/potential wincon?

Unstable Announcement

DivineSmooof, 7 years ago

Updated the list to my current build of the deck. Not sure when I'll get the time to finish the primer, but I'd rather put the deck out there than leave it in The Abyss.

The most important part of the announcement is the unbanning of (most) silver-bordered cards, which means we can actually run The Cheese Stands Alone in the mainboard. For the next 2 months, the deck is going to be waaaay better, since Cheese wins as a state-based action trigger, while Barren Glory is an upkeep trigger.

More Targeted Cuts

Additions

In: Serra Ascendant, Luminarch Ascension, Fellwar Stone, Solemn Simulacrum, Canyon Slough

Serra Ascendant: Serra Ascendant's reprinting in Iconic Masters has made the card obtainable for under 10 dollars. It's a Commander staple in white, and it's easy to see why. It's an efficient threat in my primary color. If it's in my opening seven, it allows me to gain possibly 6, 12 or even more life. Additionally, it feeds keyword soup on the Odric plan.

Luminarch Ascension: Luminarch Ascension is a win condition that needs to come down in the early game. It's a mana dump when I have little else to do and can quickly get out of hand. It combos with Anointed Procession. It counts towards Sphere of Protection. This card is going to be just plain bad against fast, direct damage based decks like Purphoros and pretty dicey against decks that keep constant damage pressure up like Nekusar. This may have to get swapped randomly as a meta call. We'll try it out and see how it runs.

Fellwar Stone: Another rock for ramp. This also color fixes. This is replacing terminate and should be easier to cast and help with smoothing and fixing.

Solemn Simulacrum: Generally an EDH Allstar, Solemn is easy to cast, ramps, and draws a card. It also makes a profitable block early-mid game. Should help with smoothing and fixing.

Canyon Slough: Strictly better than Akoum Refuge. The 1 life is almost never relevant, while the ability to pitch for a better card later is. I need to be targetting the two remaining guild gates in this deck for replacement as well.

Cuts

Out: Swiftfoot Boots, Concerted Effort, Terminate, Falkenrath Noble, Akoum Refuge

Swiftfoot Boots: I'm not planning on winning with commander damage, so Swiftfoot Boots is objectively bad. Lightning Greaves is strictly better in this strategy as Shroud vs Hexproof does not matter. Marchesa's main thing is to come down and give me monarch. Protecting her from targeted removal isn't worth the card and if I miss out on an assassin token, it's not that big of a deal.

Concerted Effort: Concerted Effort is harder to part with, as it adds a much needed separate source of keyword duplication outside of Odric. It's also an enchantment that ticks up Sphere of Safety to critical mass. Even better, it confers Protection from Teysa to everything else, something Odric can't do. The problem is, it's a 4 mana do-nothing enchantment. Removing it for a 1 or 2 mana spell that are much likelier to make a big impact on the game is probably much better. Concerted Effort has sat dead in my hand and on the board significantly more times than it has won me the game.

Terminate: A quality removal spell. I currently have better cards to deal with problem creatures at instant speed. They also are more flexible hitting permanents or enchantments. About 60% of the time Terminate would be targeting a problem commander, for which Darksteel Mutation is a better card. For 2 mana, I'd rather have the next best rock available to me for ramp and fixing.

Falkenrath Noble: A quality body with flying and a good effect in a token deck. Ultimately, however, we're not running Zulaport Cutthroat and Blood Artist (or even Butcher of Malakir), so the effect density just isnt there. I have a mild Aristocrats subtheme in Prossh already. For four mana, Solemn Simulacrum is just plain better.

Akoum Refuge: See above. These lands are as bad as Guild Gates, even in a deck that cares about paying life. Canyon Slough is superior.

We're at the point where none of the cards we're cutting are necessarily bad. I could see either card returning in the next few months if some of my other experiments don't work out.

Watchlist

Potential cuts later: Doomed Traveler, Darksteel Mutation, and Kaya, Ghost Assassin

Doomed Traveler: I like this card, but it's just not powerful enough for the slot. My initial thought was it would help chump and get incidental buffs from my token package. 1 drop creatures just aren't going to be powerful enough in this format.

Darksteel Mutation: This is a meta hate card that destroys Commander based strategies and does very little to robust combo strategies. It has stone walled Ruhan and Purphoros quite nicely, and also blanked against Ghave and Nekusar.

Kaya, Ghost Assassin: Planeswalkers cause far too much hate. My meta has a habit of hating out powerful permanents and doing nothing about combo pieces. Kaya is very much targeted for that reason. The card draw and life drain are both fine options. As is the targeted "removal" on the 0 line. This card just doesn't do as much for my strategy as a token/life gain centric Sorin or Elspeth would. I like the card draw, but if all she does is come down, draw me a card and force opponents to pitch their worst card and then die on my opponents' next 3 turns, I don't think she's worth the 4 mana.

My deck continues to evolve away from the Monarch mechanic and towards card draw, tokens, and enchantment density. Some additional ideas I've had is to add some anthem effects to buff out the token strategy. Elesh Norn would be a prime example.

Side note

Solemnity's slot is going to be much more flexible. I've established that the 99th card in my deck is always going to be meta hate, and I will routinely need to change these out depending on match ups. Solemnity's inclusion was for countering Ghave and Infect.

Additional cards to target for this slot:

Graveyard Hate: Rest in Peace, Relic of Progenitus, Tormod's Crypt

Artifact/Enchantment Hate: Stony Silence, Aura of Silence, Tempest of Light

Storm, Spellslinging Hate: Thalia, Guardian of Thraben

More to come.

100+ UPVOTES!

snotice, 7 years ago

I finally hit the mark! 100 upvotes! It took nearly 3 years, but it happened! Thank you all who have made suggestions and contributed to fine tuning this general. I'm exicted for Rivals of Ixalan and what will be brought to the table. I'm hoping for possibly 2 to 3 new cards to slide into an already strong deck! :)

New Cards

sia-fu, 7 years ago

-Life's Finale ------> In Garruk's Wake ( Garruks wake was a little too expensive. It was nice to be able to not destroy my own creatures, But as long as I can regenerate a few I should be ok.) -Woodfall Primus -------> Mortis Dogs - (Mortis Dogs was awkward in this deck rarely was it a good choice to put counters on. It had interesting interactions with Jarad, But woodfall is just a little more interesting.) -Kodama's Reach ------> Mulch ( Ironically mulch was one of the first cards to inspire me to make this deck.( that and Varolz...) It doesn't really ramp though and often i was hoping to get no lands at all. basically, other cards do its job better. -Life from the Loam ------> Shambling Shell ( Life from the loam lets me Dredge and play mana if I have none in hand. Shambling shell gives me a counter and dredge, and costs one extra mana...) -Genesis -----> Brawn (Brawn was underwhelming in this deck, trample was nice, but most creatures I try to hit with have evasion of their own.) -Nyxathid ------>Thought Gorger ( I felt I could use another cheap counter source in the deck. Thought Gorger was another creature that I felt i was wasting counters on.) -Puppeteer Clique ------> Walking Ballista ( Walking ballista is a good card but doesn't really work in this deck. Puppeteer clique synergizes well with life's finale, and this deck could always use more Flying.

played a bit online. the deck did well against affinity. Though it got much better after sideboard. It crushed a monoblock because it had no answer to the enchantments. Also faced "soul sisters." That game lasted forever because of Souls lifegain and token generation. But they ultimately didn't have much of an actual answer. The deck I had no answer for was green lantern. Firing Squad has too many necessary parts that unless you draw all the pieces in your opening hand you face a huge uphill battle. got slightly better after Sideboard but still got my clock cleaned.

Round Three - Kicking the spice up a knotch

bobong, 7 years ago

Making this deck a little less jank and a little more competitive. The previous versions didn't have much counter play or interaction besides a couple of Izzet Charms. This obviously was an issue and the deck didn't have enough punch to finish off our opponent. I think the idea of pumping up our Riverfall Mimic can be an effective strat, we just needed to take a slightly different approach. With the addition of Blood Moon, Remand, and Ral Zarek, we transformed the jank aggro to jank tempo. We are trying to hit hard with our Riverfall Mimic early and then smooth out the mid game with some control while retaining the soul of the deck: the dank. Let me know what you guys think, and as always, suggestions are always welcome.

Change Log 5

-Fortitude +World Breaker Bringing World Breaker back to give me some more targeted removal that I lost from cutting Woodfall Primus and Terastodon. I’m not sure how relevant World Breaker’s secondary ability will be, but it fits the theme of the deck of Hebron ends up in the graveyard. I also like that he exiles. While I can’t benefit from targeting my own lands, exiling opponent’s permanents is really nice. He also helps to shore up greens weakness to flyers. Considering cutting Claws of Gix for Nissa, Vastwood Seer when I get a hold of another. I don’t really need more land sacrifice outlets than I already have. Most lands do it on their own. But Nissa’s ability to grab a forest and draw cards is what I want to be doing. The last card I’m considering cutting is Season’s Past. I don’t have enough reps with it yet though. It’s just a card i’ve Been wanting to play around with. If Past is no good Ulvenwald Hydra or Terastodon will probably fill that spot.
