Pyre Hound

Creature — Elemental Dog

Trample

Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell, put a +1/+1 counter on Pyre Hound.

I'd go something amongst the lines of this, on a simpler Mono R version

Creature Base

  1. 4x Brighthearth Banneret
  2. 4x Fire Urchin
  3. 4x Kiln Fiend
  4. 4x Lavakin Brawler
  5. 4x Goblin Smuggler
  6. 4x Pyre Hound

Spells Base

  1. 4x Built to Smash
  2. 4x Brute Force
  3. 4x Titan's Strength
  4. 4x Infuriate

There's a cheeky combo you can throw in if you'd like as well with Brighthearth Banneret + Brighthearth Banneret + Grinning Ignus for infinite mana, and use Fiery Hellhound or Igneous Cur or Inner-Flame Igniter or any of those Pay : gains +x/+x

if you are moving in the burn direction, there are creatures that definitely play into that.

Guttersnipe Young Pyromancer Kiln Fiend Pyre Hound Thermo-Alchemist

To play off of the reduced damage... Hundred-Handed One literally, blocking everyone.

other stuff Deflecting Palm...I think, since you control Gisela's ability, you control when it hits the stack. Which means, if you use deflecting palm and have it hit the stack after Gisela's ability (so it resolves first) it will cancel the full damage.

example: a source is going to do 5 damage: 5 damage on the stack, Gisela's ability on the stack, deflecting palm on the stack. deflecting palm resolves first canceling the 5 damage, that 5 damage will be dealt to controller, Gisela's ability stacks. It is now 10 damage.

If it stacked differently, as damage, deflecting palm, Gisela; Gisela's ability resolved first, the damage deflecting palm would counter would be 2, then the total damage would be only 4.

So...like if a big "X" hydra was charging with like 20 +1/+1 counters... Gisela, Blade of Goldnight + Deflecting Palm ...that's 40 damage to the controller, game over.

And if this all isn't nasty enough...how about making yourself hexproof? Leyline of Sanctity

Darth_Savage thank you so much. I keep feeling like standard or modern goes to turn 8 or something, although I meant this to be a casual deck. Concerning your statement, I really like Guttersnipe , so would two of them work? Also concerning Pyre Hound , I wanted this deck to be modern, then my friend asked me to go to a standard tournament with him, and I had to switch it up a bit. I'll make sure to fix that.

TwinStags Hey! Thanks for making the effort for posting! I have been contemplating the Aetherflux Reservoir . It definitely fits in the deck. I currently have it in my Izzet spellslinger deck, but I think it makes more sense to put it in here. I'll debate on purchasing a second one if I think I need it in both decks. I love the Aria of Flame rec! I've seen the card before and now I'm adding it to my Maybeboard until I get my hands on it. Thanks!

To be honest, I have only played around 5 games with this deck so I'm still int he very early stages of figuring out what gets targeted, what works/what doesn't work, etc. So for now I'm keeping Guttersnipe and Electrostatic Field unless people just target them like crazy.

I agree with you on Assemble the Legion . It was mainly a filler card for some token generation when I first built this deck since I didn't already own Young Pyromancer or Vanguard of Brimaz yet. So it can definitely come out now for something more sleek.

And last but not least, Solar Blaze lol. I have it in as a filler board wipe atm. Obviously not great and doesn't synergize with the deck. That will be one of the first cards out. I actually plan on taking a bunch out: Assemble the Legion , Solar Blaze , Surreal Memoir , Pyre Hound , probably Chandra, Fire Artisan , and Mana Cylix for more mana rocks, Aria of Flame, Land Tax and another board wipe.

VaalVanir no worries lol, this format works just fine. I'd say a good 70% of my victories come from Aetherflux Reservoir and Paradox Engine since you will at that point be casting enough cards a turn to start gaining 12-15 life everytime you cast a spell. So in a single round around the table you've gained more than enough life to ping every other player to death. The other 25% of games comes from Guttersnipe or Firebrand Archer since Paradox Engine is such a huge threat on the table it falls to these two dudes to close out games when my main win conditions get nuked.

As for Pyre Hound , he is unfortunately one of the weakest "Heroic" cards for sure. The upside is that the spell doesn't need to target him to get benefit from it, but it is still at the end of the day, only a single +1/+1 counter. First of all, given the previous statement, winning via combat damage only would happen at most, 5% of your games. So that means Hound is only helping you out 1/20 matches (not very good)

And secondly is how his ability compares to others. Let's compare him to Phalanx Leader since it is probably the weakest inclusion of the creatures in my deck. When I'm spawning token creatures on the battlefield I'd say I'd have about an average of 8 creatures before I either win, or get hit by a board wipe, so we'll use that to compare. Hound costs twice as much as Phalanx Leader, and ONLY hits himself. So one +1/+1 counter for 4 mana. Phalanx will hit roughly 8 people with his for half the price, so that makes it 16 +1/+1 counters for 4 mana. While this number will fluctuate up and down depending on the board state, it is fair to say that Pyre Hound is about 16 times worse than our worst creature in the deck, and even when he can be used, he is only relevant 1/20th of the time, since he caters to the least likely win condition in our deck, combat damage.

The only reason Phalanx Leader still has a spot in this deck despite combat damage being an unlikely outcome is because he helps dodge the ever popular Pyroclasm , and to a greater extent Blasphemous Act . And he combos VERY nicely with Dreadhorde Arcanist

I see where you are going with this deck. Swing big with your heroic and pew pew with Guttersnipe , Labyrinth Champion . Will you consider Firebrand Archer and Sentinel Tower ? One creature you can consider is Pyre Hound .
