The Scarab God

Legendary Creature — God

At the beginning of your upkeep, each opponent loses X life and you scry X, where X is the number of Zombies you control. (Look at the top X cards of your library, then put any number of them on top or bottom of your library in any order.)

: Exile target creature card from a graveyard. Create a token that's a copy of it, except it's a 4/4 black Zombie.

When The Scarab God dies, return it to its owner's hand at the beginning of the next end step.

@capwner, nice deck! I also have a problematic deck to deal with in my pod, some The Scarab God EDH in a pod full of graveyard decks... Since your deck is well rounded, I don't think I have anything to add, but have you seen the new card Archdruid's Charm from the new set MKM? Maybe it is a nice modal tutor to include...?

Thanks for your feedback! I appreciate the help on this deck as for The Scarab God I'd replace Havengul Lich since Scarab does his job better. For Secrets of the Dead I run River Kelpie since it does the same effect but for each player not just my own and can also combo with mikeaus, the unhallowed if you have a sac outlet. For the Liliana's Reaver I'd run Mindleech Ghoul as it's faster to get cards out of all my opponents hands.

Nice. The Scarab God is amazing in zombie-themed decks. If you'd go for one, I would recommend cutting Corpse Connoisseur for it. Secrets of the Dead is exceptionally powerful considering your strategy (self-milling followed by casting). It's in your maybeboard right now but I'd definitely mainboard it. Liliana's Reaver is pretty spectacular value for its cmc; would consider that one too. Have fun with the brew! FYI, here's my own Gisa and Geralf deck.

Starting with mana, you only have 44 sources. I would recommend going around 47. Sapphire Medallion and Jet Medallion are a lot better than the monuments, although more expensive. You want to avoid 3 mana rocks like Dimir Locket and Commander's Sphere, you have better options in two mana ones. Add Coldsteel Heart, Fellwar Stone, Dimir Signet, Talisman of Dominance and at least one land.

For interaction, you could add enchantment removal like Feed the Swarm. Bitter Triumph is new and may be better than Infernal Grasp here.

Since mill and discard can basically act as card draw, you can run cards like Mire Triton, Stitcher's Supplier, Undead Butler, Palantir of Orthanc, and Fact or Fiction, as well as sacrifice based card draw like Corrupted Conviction, Village Rites, and Deadly Dispute. There's also always all-stars Black Market Connections, Phyrexian Arena, and Rhystic Study if you want to go that direction.

Some card to protect your commander like Netherborn Altar, Malakir Rebirth  Flip, Zombie Master or Lightning Greaves / Swiftfoot Boots may be helpful if you rely on Gisa and it keeps getting removed.

There are certain cards I am not a fan of in this deck including Master of Death, Prized Amalgam, Scourge of Nel Toth, Tomebound Lich, Dead Revels, and Syphon Flesh.

Some other cards to consider include Cryptbreaker, Geralf, Visionary Stitcher, Ghoulcaller Gisa, Lord of the Undead, Noxious Ghoul, Mikaeus, the Unhallowed, The Scarab God, Distant Melody, Buried Alive, Diabolic Intent, Liliana, Dreadhorde General. You could probably replace similar cards with these if they are better.

Gravecrawler + Rooftop Storm + Sac Outlet is infinite. I don't think you run many sac outlets. You could add Acererak the Archlich to go infinite with just Rooftop Storm.

This looks like a very cool deck! I was recently trying to build something like this. If I read your description it plays really well? Don't you find yourself playing too few removal and ramp? And can you keep up with your recursion against the removal of all opponents??

Possible suggestions could be: Razaketh, the Foulblooded; he's big and he can tutor your next plan. Archfiend of Despair it's just a nasty beater. Maybe the The Scarab God for even more reanimation? And I figured if your commander gets stolen or let's say turned into an 3/3 Elk (Yes Oko, we've all been there) cards that do the same are for example Krovikan Sorcerer and Rona, Herald of Invasion  Flip Sorry, you've asked for cuts. I really can't help you with that yet...

I have a few observations:

1) Your curve is too high. Too many hands have nothing to do on turn 1 & turn 2. Against midrange decks like Rakdos Midrange they’ll likely have Bloodtithe Harvester in play with Fatal Push ready to kill your three drop (they sack a blood token to trigger Revolt). Unless you open an Intrepid Outlander you’ll be defenseless until turn 4 or 5. You should diversify your curve with more 1 and 2 drops to smooth out your plays. While it’s not directly dungeon related I think Mosswood Dreadknight would be a great 2-drop.

2) You don’t have enough interaction. A combo deck like Greasefang, Okiba Boss can combo on turn 3 before you have a chance to remove her with Murderous Rider. If you remove her vehicle with You Find a Cursed Idol but don’t kill her she’ll just combo again the next turn. There’s a lot of great removal options in G/B like Abrupt Decay or Assassin's Trophy that handle tons of different matchups.

3) You don’t have a good plan for over-the-too value decks. The dungeon plan takes time to grind (not a bad thing), but your need to give yourself the time to grind. If you play against a deck with something like Bring to Light or Enigmatic Incarnation you might get completely ran over by Omnath, Locus of Creation or The Scarab God. You can fight back against these decks with unconditional removal like Go for the Throat and discard spells like Duress and Liliana of the Veil.

4) You need some more card draw. If you’re lowering your curve you should expect to play longer games & can pull ahead of opponents with card draw engines. Castle Locthwain pulls you ahead of your opponents in long games. Hive of the Eye Tyrant gives you an option to win the Dungeon back from an opponent when you’re out of creatures & closes long games against control decks. Field of Ruin is great for midrange mirror matches bc it blows up your opponent’s castles.

Dungeons can be a hard mechanic to work with but it rewards you for playing long games & slowing your opponent down. If you run a solid midrange deck with Dungeon cards to break parity and pull you ahead you’ll have a solid game plan.

The Scarab God’s Zombie Mania. This is my zombie deck, also based off of Gisa and Gralf precon, but heavily modified. I recommend that you take out some of your non land cards that won’t add much to the game I.e. Fleshbag Marauder. You need to have around 40 lands. 39 won’t kill you, but 36 is way too little. With Gisa and geralf, you are going to mill lands. It is a fact. So you have to have lands to spare. Also, cards to check out: Rooftop Storm, Endless Ranks of the Dead, Liliana, the Last Hope, Fact or Fiction, Dark Ritual, and any of the zombies or other cards on my deck. If you want, I would 10000% recommend The Scarab God who is my commander. If you can, put a tutor or two in. I have Illicit Shipment as one of mine. And for goodness sakes put Murder back in. That’s all. Good luck!

As your deck is based around Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker I'd recommend adding 4 of him.

Secondly I'd take out Ludevic's Test Subject  Flip he's just to slow. I tried to make him work and even with training grounds he's a large Mana dump and your opponent will just wait until he's either flipped or close to just remove him.

Thirdly, you need more draw spells. Control decks have some form of draw capabilities and your deck has 0. I'd recommend Opt Serum Visions or Expressive Iteration for starters.

Fourth The Scarab God is a good card but I'd either find a way to break his abilities or take him out. As of right now he's a large Mana dump and I'm not seeing any game enders.

Lastly I'd take out Slavering Nulls the odds that a 2/1 creature survives and makes a hit without any help is almost 0. I'd go with something more guaranteed liked Thoughtseize Duress or Inquisition of Kozilek. Hope this helps.
