I made a trial brew of Talrand commander deck

You can play lands just fine. You just need to be able to cantrip over them. If I built a deck as you describe, it would feature Lich, Lich's Mastery, Lich's Mirror, and Platinum Angel, because we will not end up life positive. I would choose an esper commander in order to have access to artifact tutors such as Treasure Mage and enchantment tutors such as Academy Rector, as well as recursion, lifelink/lifegain, powerful black tutors, and blink/flicker effects. Sharuum the Hegemon would be my commander of choice as we can flicker him to recur our combo pieces. I like your idea and look forward to seeing it develop.

Kiyomei, I use Drannith Magistrate to prevent my opponents from casting their commanders from the command zone, which is crippling in its own right, however, my strategy is far different from yours and less competitive so it may not be as appropriate for your stax strategy (my deck is on my profile). Late game, it also prevents commanders from casting spells from zones outside of the hand zone. As such, it stops Urza, Kess, and Muldrotha type strategies that hope to cast their win conditions from exile, graveyard, or wherever. It’s easy to pod into with Llanowar Elves-type dorks and completely shuts down many of the most competitive strategies, which tend to be commander driven. It also pods into Eternal Witness and Faeburrow Elder. It’s a real asshole in cEDH. I play it in Brago as well.

Nice list. Here’s my suggestions: Doubling Season (you’re running craterhoof so I don’t see how this shouldn’t be included), Karn's Bastion (not great but is sometimes just enough), Gilder Bairn + Paradise Mantle (can be infinite with another enabler but good enough as is). You should consider running any other decent walkers that ult at 2x devotion. Look at The Ozolith as well.

abierto, as a seasoned Derevi pilot I can assure you that This decklist is still perfectly viable. I understand the author’s hesitation in adding Drannith Magistrate: 1) what could one possibly remove that doesn’t harm the combo engine? 2) why add more direct hate when the stax is already sufficiently crippling? I personally play the magistrate in my own very-current Derevi deck, but frankly, this decklist is far more competitive than mine is even without it. This decklist would crush. No disrespect—-just reason.

Where’s the Strip Mine?!

flowbeat, I have been carefully Crafting a sub-budget $75 version of Derevi for some time. Stay tuned and you will see it sooner than later (I only have $20 worth of cuts left to make). Budget Derevi will always run more stax and evasive creatures than hatebears, because hatebears tend to be expensive monetarily. Thank you for the kind words.

I will not be building for any new formats in which Shahrazad is banned. Period! :)

You honor me, Deadpoo111. On the note of ‘leaving’: I find that it is best to obtain input from as many sources as possible. Expand your reach. There is far more than T/O, which is itself a great resource, but one of many. Good luck to you and don’t hesitate to reach out.

P.S. On the topic of drama: just disregard it. I’m impervious to it merely because I don’t pay it any mind. Food for thought :)

Nice list. If we’re running Isochron Scepter and Blue Sun's Zenith, then we might as well run Dramatic Reversal. We can draw our opponents out, or we can draw ourself out and run Thassa's Oracle. We would then benefit from more two-producing mana rocks such as Worn Powerstone. We can protect our counters and combos by running Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir. We could also run Knowledge Pool to be a real jerk. Also, consider Stormtide Leviathan, as he supports your strategy of beating face with drakes. We should be running 31 snow-covered islands, as running only one won’t get us the benefit with Extraplanar Lens. Good work.

SirChris39, if you brew a Talrand deck, make sure to tag me in it so I see it posted. Thanks! :)

SirChris39, thank you very much. It’s a lot of fun to play (and inexpensive). I appreciate it!
