What is your favorite commander?

Commander (EDH) forum

I choose Mishra, Artificer Prodigy. It was close though because Nin, the Pain Artist and Circu, Dimir Lobotomist are fun as well. The reason I picked Mishra is because he initially looks like he is useless in commander (Circu does too). When you take the time to think about it he has a lot of possibilities. One of my favorite aspects about Magic is the ability to create your own decks. Mishra allows me to be more creative and unique that is why I picked him. Who do you pick and why?

Xira Arien. I get access to Jund colors, I get card advantage whenever I want it, plus my opponents don't see her as "threatening" so they'll leave me alone until it's too late.

I'd probably say either The Mimeoplasm or Feldon of the Third Path. Unlike a lot of other commanders, they require being built around and give you piles of value.

Sidisi, Brood Tyrant
Not because she's the strongest card ever or anything, but just because I love the card.

Well, that depends. Favorite commander I own a deck for? Either Ghave, Guru of Spores or Rhys the Redeemed. Both are combo engines that can just beat down when necessary. Favorite commander I've tried to build a deck for and never quite succeeded is Nekusar, the Mindrazer. It's just fun making everyone die because they're doing every Magic player's favorite thing, drawing cards. Favorite commander I'm going to build in the future is Phelddagrif because of shenanigans. And my favorite commander I'll never build (partially because of friends that already have the deck and partially because of the cost to make it) goes to Sliver Overlord because Sliver fun times.

February 27, 2016 9:26 a.m.

Patron of the Moon. Ridiculously awesome.

February 27, 2016 9:43 a.m.

FAMOUSWATERMELON all my yes. my Patron deck used to be super broken. him and Uyo, Silent Prophet are fun. it becomes ": Copy target instant or sorcery spell."

Azusa, Lost but Seeking is my current favorite, but Sliver Overlord is my first love as I have been a sliver fan for years.

I don't really have a favorite commander. My decks tend to rotate quite often. I'll build a new deck from the ground up quite frequently and take apart older ones. I'll usually have 6 in rotation at a time. If I had to say, I'd probably go with either Arcanis the Omnipotent or Azami, Lady of Scrolls. Although Mono-U combo isn't all that great at higher levels of play, I enjoy the challenge of working with the archetype.

February 27, 2016 11:28 a.m.

I would once have said Nekusar, the Mind Razer, but currently it's Tasigur, the Golden Fang. He's so very versatile and even budget builds can quickly get out of hand.

Animar, Soul of Elements has been my longest running deck and I f*cking love it. He makes me never want to pay full cmc for spells lol

His colors offer so many amazing options - both combo and beatdown - so you can take the deck in any direction you want

I'm still unsure about what a Mishra, Artificer Prodigy Deck does...

Anyway, my only commander deck I have is Keranos, God of Storms. It's a lot of fun to play if I don't get hounded out of the game for being a control deck. XD

Phage the Untouchable or Haakon, Stromgald Scourge... cant decide. nvm im going with Brothers Yamazaki /yay

February 27, 2016 1:40 p.m.

Arvail says... #14

@Mortem - Mishra's really janky. His ability isn't actually useless. What you can do is play an artifact and have Mishra's ability enter the stack. From there, you can have your artifact get countered by abilities like Nether Void. After the spell is countered, it enters the graveyard. Mishra's ability then resolves and you get your artifact on the field anyways. All of your opponents still have to pay the extra cost or have their things get countered.

Mortem says... #16

TheDevicer Oh, so he acts like "Artifacts you control can't be countered"?

My favorite commander was probably Kresh the Bloodbraided, and only because it was with that commander that, in my play group, I was growing a reputation as someone who did not enjoy being even partially locked down.

Lock down, even slightly, resulted in dead. Lethal commander to the face, fun time, go.

February 27, 2016 2:01 p.m.

Arvail says... #18

Yeah, he can, but Mishra can also make it harder for other players to resolve spells too. It's not a particularly strong strategy, but it's a fun one to pull off.

February 27, 2016 2:09 p.m.

Sigarda, Host of Herons is my current build. The card itself is probably one of my favorites. Although, the most fun commander deck I've built was Merieke Ri Berit. Just being able to blink things after you steal them and keep them forever is legit. Plus, she isn't a win condition so it's not always necessary to have her in play and you let the synergies of your deck take over, if she's in play, that's just an added bonus.

Animar, Soul of Elements is probably my favourite commander. I get bored of decks that play out the same way each game, so I like Animar because it is versatile in its win conditions. Combo, commander damage, or big creature beatdown; a good Animar deck can go for any of those options depending on the situation.

I like The Mimeoplasm because it has a unique way of interacting with my opponents' graveyards that can have a serious impact on how my opponents play. It runs my favourite colour combination, and offers strong win conditions through both commander damage, control, and combo.

Derevi, Empyrial Tactician takes the number 3 spot for me, mostly because of its cost, colour combination, art, and versatility. Derevi is a good commander for a variety of different deck archetypes, so she's fun to build around (when you aren't just going the STAX route), and her abilities reward careful play. The instant-speed shenanigans she offers make her a fun commander to run.

Feldon of the Third Path and Phenax, God of Deception have long been my favorite decks.

February 27, 2016 5:15 p.m.

Yisan, the Wanderer Bard is my favorite commander. He is a man that can lead to a build around me style or a "I like this creature so ill consistently play it " he's a commander that can grow with you

Either Animar, Soul of Elements, Rafiq of the Many, or Tasigur, the Golden Fang. What's funny, is each is U/G with one of each the other colours paired with them. If I had to pick one, I'd probably say Tasigur,I've made several lists around him and had fun with each of them.

My top 5

  1. Rhys the Redeemed
  2. Ghave, Guru of Spores
  3. Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim
  4. Kruphix, God of Horizons
  5. Krenko, Mob Boss although i would never built any red deck, as I dislike the game style, I must admit that he is fun to watch in action.
February 27, 2016 9:27 p.m.

Top 5;

  1. Surrak Dragonclaw U/G/R is my favorite 3 color combo, and I HATE having my fatties countered.
  2. Iroas, God of Victory for his static abilities.
  3. Purphoros, God of the Forge // Nekusar, the Mindrazor for their non biased damage, and for how they speed up bigger games.
  4. Kaalia of the Vast because she's RIDICULOUS, even if she is easy to keep in check.
  5. Thrun, the Last Troll because "Don't touch me".

Heliod, God of the Sun simply because of his hard to remove nature and ability to generate board advantage at instant speed. he's underwhelming in a lot of ways, but extremely resilient and consistently able to apply pressure.

February 28, 2016 10:33 a.m.

Wildsong says... #36

I once tried Heliod, God of the Sun, with Serra's Sanctum, Sphere of Safety, Martyr's Bond and some Sac outlet in My Rhys deck. That time i used Humility, Academy Rector and Living Plane . It was a Rhys version full of control and soft locks. It was not that consistent but i could hold the game until something like Coat of Arms or Beastmaster Ascension hits the table.

From that experience i remember that Heliod was bad as token generator but is probably a Good commander with the right cards.

Liliana, Heretical Healer and Diaochan, Artful Beauty are my two favorites. I love that Liliana lets me abuse cards like Waste Not super hard and her emblem is just insanely broken. Probably the most ridiculous thing I ever did with Waste Not on the battlefield is play Dark Deal in a 5 player game after a Sidisi, Brood Tyrant player Traumatized himself (pun intended) and then cast Praetor's Council. I got probably close to 20+ triggers of each option and was able to end the game quite easily in that turn (thanks black devotion cards).

Diao Chan is more of a fun multiplayer card. It makes gamestates quite interesting as simply deciding who gets the choice of what to blow up is a challenge in itself sometimes.

Mine is Scion of the Ur-Dragon because dragons, plus I'm working on a g/w permission deck with Captain Sisay

When I just started playing MTG i thought EDH looked like an interesting format but was slightly intimidated because of the size of the cardpool and the advanced decks the more experienced players where using. When Zurgo Helmsmasher was released I finally had a creature that gave me a solid plan and courage to build my first deck. Just kill everyone before they get their shenanigans going!

That is why Zurgo is my all-time favourite Commander, because he got me into the format and he's easy to build around which is excellent for a somewhat beginner like me.

My favourite commander among the decks i currently have is Meren of Clan Nel Toth, because that value is sweet.

Prime Speaker Zegana: One of the few commanders that does its thing on cast. Always included Stormsurge Kraken and Gigapede.
Karametra, God of Harvests: It's just lands and creatures. Don't worry about it.
Progenitus: 5 color draw-go. 30 instants and very consistent, without mana from nonland sources of course. Permananents are for scrubs.

Purphoros, God of the Forge because there is nothing more fun than applying so much preasure on the table that you can see the despair and agony of your opponents as they desperately try to stop de inevitable.
