Sheoldred: Praetor of Affections

Commander / EDH Mono-Black Reanimator

Tiddilywinkus

So I've had quite a few dabblings in mono black, always changing from one Commander from the next never really catching my stride with any of them. That is until i received a copy of Sheoldred, Whispering One.

Not only do I love Phyrexia and New Phyrexia Lore, but this particular Sheoldred is the very first card my girlfriend ever got me, and it meant a bit because she doesn't play magic and yet still supports what i enjoy even it doesn't interest her.

So i decided to stick with it and it has been developed into a much played deck of mine, now that I'm finished with he backstory we can move to the deck-tech.

______

The deck revolves around Sheoldred's, and often blacks general ability, to reanimate creatures; but at the same time Sheoldred has a built in board control effect. The keeps its commanders identity by trying to control the borad in subtle ways to the best of its ability until it can drop a bomb or get minor combos with and eventually win. This deck is definitely made to be played for more than two players, however it preforms well 1v1 as well.

As before i stated that controlling the board is a large part of this deck, but not it the typical blue/white fashion. Usually it is biding your time and playing pretty slowly at the start, and that board control often comes with quite a bit of sacrifice.

There are a few choice cards I have in here that others often would have me take out.

Overseer of the Damned: This card has been questioned by quite a few people. Sure it cost 7 mana to kill a creature, but I'm getting 7 power and toughness out of it, 5 of it flying, along with anything else that dies i get increased value. You want to board wipe with a bunch of creatures on the board? Fine by me and my now army of zombies.

Worst Fears: Taking control of an opponents turn is invaluable, not taking it out.

Sadistic Sacrament and Nightmare Incursion: People often claim that black has a huge problem removing artifacts and enchantments. This is true, but only if they hit the board and these cards sole that problem. Even casting Sadistic Sacrament for 3 inst bad. Playing a deck that uses a combo? Bye bye combo pieces, Scared of that Oloro drawing into a Felidar Sovereign or Test of Endurance? Not anymore you aren't.

I could go on and on about the rest of the cards in the deck, but they seem pretty self explanatory, mana ramp, removal, board wipes, card draw, and other utility are pretty easy to spot. I could add more tutors to make the deck more consistent and i probably will sometime in the future if i get my hands on some.

Of course I am always looking for more ways to improve the deck and would be happy to receive such comments, and of course if you like it why not +1!

PS: I do not want to play the Sanguine Bond Exquisite Blood combo. I find that combo to be such a cheese combo and ultimately uninspired and disappointing to everyone.
