Maybeboard

This is a very casually built budget Merfolk deck put together the old fashioned way. I jammed a pile of Merfolk I had from recent sets. Then, I went through my binders to pull supplemental cards that fit the flavor and supported the general game plan. No EDHRec. No looking at other peoples decks. Just playing with cards on hand. I ran the deck 3 times and it $h!t the bed in every game.

Still, I enjoy the deck so I kept running it and sometimes is isn't so awful. On the one hand it is aggressive so it draws some early hate. When people realize it is the least threatening deck at the table however, it is possible to slip under the radar and build a decent board.

I chose Morophon as my commander because I am curious to see how his abilities impacted a generic build of a relatively strong tribe like Merfolk. In my other Morophon deck I am looking to ramp him out as quickly as possible. Here, I have learned the best strategy is to play the deck like it is a 99 card singleton Merfolk deck and not concerned with the commander at all. Then, mid to late game you can bring out your commander as a 6/6 Mer-Monster that accelerates your ability to dump a ton of stuff out of your hand on the cheap. He is a godsend after a board wipe. Especially a mass return to hand effect like Cyclonic Rift.

The deck is basically Simic but I take advantage of Morophon's color identity to run any fun Merfolk card I find. Sygg, River Guide, Sygg, River Cutthroat, and Jori En, Ruin Diver are in here.

Initially I figured I would rely on my commanders ability to cast these off-color cards. Shifting the game-plan away from casting Morophon early forced me to re-think that and I added more "rainbow" lands to give me a decent chance of having the occasional off-color mana I will need early.

This is my least powerful deck running a lot of jank. I didn't expect it to be a favorite to play. Where else would I run Polymorphist's Jest?
