Marchesa Vampire Resurrection

Commander / EDH* UBR (Grixis)

sunwugong

This is a vampire tribal aggro deck that seeks to combine many of the inherent +1/+1 counter synergy elements of vampires with the +1/+1 counter activated recursion ability of its general, Marchesa. It is not a sudden aggro deck instead seeking to eek out tempo value as it accumulates bodies and maintains numbers through repeated resurrections. In addition to its core aggro game plan it offers a few additional avenues of interaction from a handful of other vampire tribal sub-themes such as drain and gain, lifelink, sacrifice, and theft.

The general deck gameplan is to play creatures and put at least one +1/+1 counter on them as soon as possible. Many of the cards in the deck are meant to facilitate this goal, either providing their own counters or extending counter acquisition to others (often limited to other vampires, hence vampire tribal). Early on we also want to get Marchesa out with her own +1/+1 counter. The combined effect of this is a free recur-to-battlefield effect on all such creatures, Marchesa included. If counters can be re-added to the recurred creatures somehow the recursion is repeatable as long as Marchesa is on the board. From here the deck can go many ways, growing a board state and being passive or political, or being more aggressive supported by the recursion effect when attacking creatures die. Besides attacking the deck is well supported with card draw and backup recursion, and has several other small tricks hidden within.

Notably, dethrone does not form a major part of the deck's gameplan. In the right circumstances it can be a very useful way to get a +1/+1 counter on creatures, particularly the non-vampires or Marchesa herself, but unlike some Marchesa decks this one does not seek to stay always just below the max life total. The fairly reliable +1/+1 counter generation from our tribal synergies allows this and also allows fully enjoying the lifegain effects built into vampires.
