Basilica Guards Discussion

Caerwyn on EDH Color Identity with Shrine ...

ArachnidGoat - in the future, please remember to hit the "Mark as Answer" button on a responsive post to indicate you no longer have any follow-up questions, as well as to allow other players with the same question to quickly identify the correct answer.

I have gone ahead and marked pskinn01's answer as accepted this time, but would appreciate if you could take care of this in the future.

Also, while not relevant to this particular question, I want to add one piece of information to pskinn01's post, because there is one niche situation with regards to colour identity that trips up new players, particularly if they are looking at the plain text of Rule 903.4 without a greater understanding of the rules.

Reminder text is not "rules text", so mana symbols in reminder text do not count toward colour identity. Right now, this only applies to extort--Basilica Guards has a mono-White colour identity, as the symbol appears in Extort's reminder text, not its rules text.

Again, not particularly relevant to your question, but I have seen this point of confusion enough that I always like to highlight it for players who are trying to get a grasp of what colour identity means.

Hey!

I like the idea, built one myself.

But I'm sad to say ... Basilica Guards is not allowed in a Bant-colored commander because its color identity is white AND black - because of the printed symbol in the rules text for its Extort ability.

I really like the idea of Axebane Guardian + Intruder Alarm + Wall of Kelp !!

Since you are concerned with your lack of Green removal, have you considered Song of the Dryads? I have found that card's ability to remove an enemy commander, without causing a zone change, to be invaluable, as you can lock a commander (particularly one lacking Blue/White/Green for enchantment removal) out of the game for an extended period of time.

Baconfish, you are sort-of correct. A creature with a hybrid mana in its cost will be both colours of that symbol - Deity of Scars, for example, is both Green and Black, regardless of what colours are spent to cast it.

However, Deity of Scars being black is not why it cannot be played in this deck. Commander cares about Colour identity, not the creature's colour. Colour Identity cares about the mana symbols in the card's cost, any mana sybmols in the card's rules text, and any colour indicator or characteristic defining ability that influences colour. In this case, it would not make a difference, as it is the mana cost (and therefore also the card's colour) that disqualifies Deity of Scars. However, there are mono-Green creatures which cannot be played in a deck with a mono-Green Colour identity. (One tiny note that confuses many people - only the rules text on a card matters. Colour symbols in reminder text does not count - thus, you can play Basilica Guards in a deck lacking Black, despite the in Extort's reminder text.

Here are some suggestions, in no particular order:

The cantrips shouldn't necessarily go into the deck but I think they're good value for being so cheap to cast. I'll post some more when I think of them

Definitely suggest swapping in a Kingpin's Pet for a Basilica Guards for a little more proactivity while keeping the number of extort abilities.

Also suggest Unmake as the strongest pauper removal you'll find in W/B, and Pillory of the Sleepless in place of Bonds of Faith and Stab Wound.

With the reprint in MM17, Gift of Orzhova is a neat enchantment to slap onto a creature.
