here's a little lore about Anafenza, the Foremost:

Tarkir of the Khans

Anafenza, the khan of the Abzan, rides into battle atop a heavy chariot pulled by her two prized ibex. Known as the Foremost, she directs battle from the front lines, her soldiers always able to see her leading the charge, and her elite guard of aven warriors always at her side. She wages war not to conquer, but to maintain the trade routes that allow her clan to function, and to protect her people and her land.

Anafenza rules from Mer-Ek Fortress, which protects the city of Arashin at the heart of Abzan territory. She wages war not to conquer, but to maintain the trade routes that allow her clan to function, and to protect her people and her land from the encroaching Sultai and Mardu war parties.

"We do not pile the skulls of our enemies, nor make them into ornaments. We grind them into dust. We leave nothing for their families to weep over, nothing for their descendants to honor." -Anafenza, the Foremost Rarely at rest on the Amber Throne, Anafenza always leads the Abzan Houses to battle.

"Stand where the whole battle can see you. Strike so they'll never forget." -Anafenza, khan of the Abzan "When we were lost and weary, the ainok showed us how to survive. They have earned the right to call themselves Abzan, and to wear the Scale." -Anafenza, khan of the Abzan When Anafenza holds court under the First Tree, the gates of Mer-Ek are sealed. No safer place exists in all of Tarkir.

Tarkir of the Dragons

In another timeline, Anafenza would have been khan, but in this reality Dragonlord Dromoka took her place. Although not an official ruler here, Anafenza was a capable warrior and talented leader. However, she practiced ancient kin-tree worship, and for that she was executed. That should have been the end of it, but Dromoka's armies report seeing a ghostly figure that looks much like Anafenza fighting alongside them and spurring them on in battle. Spirit speakers say that Anafenza must have stored her soul within a kin-tree, so that even after death she could continue to aid her clan. Dromoka disavows the existence of Anafenza's spirit, but remains always alert for kin-trees.

Martyred for worshipping her ancestors, she now walks among them. Even after Anafenza was executed, many secretly maintained their beliefs in the old ways. (Echoes of the Kin Tree)
