With the release of Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate, Mardu is the only color combination that can boast four different cards that generate Experience counters. This deck tries to combine all four disparate ways those four cards are themed.

  • Kelsien the Plague wants you to kill opposing creatures. His ping ability wants you to find ways to give him deathtouch and untap him.
  • Minthara, Merciless Soul wants your own permanents to go away, incentivizing tokens and sacrifice.
  • Daxos the Returned wants you to play a lot of enchantments.
  • Kalemne, Disciple of Iroas wants you to cast expensive creatures.
  • The experience mechanic itself wants to use proliferate effects.

All of these things are kind of at odds with each other, but there are cards that check multiple criteria. For example, Archetype of Finality is an expensive creature that is also an enchantment that provides deathtouch. Similarly Gift of Doom is an enchantment that you can either cast or morph by sacrificing a creature, and it gives deathtouch (as well as indestructible) to Kelsien. Another way I found is Evoke creatures which are expensive for Kalemne but cast for cheaper, then conveniently sacrifice themselves for Minthara.

This deck is quite a puzzle to put together and probably some choices are suboptimal at this point. For example I chose to play a bunch of R/X multicolor cards over similar non-red cards (e.g. Bedevil or Theater of Horrors) simply to make Fury easier to cast. However, I think this adds to the charm and the deck doesn't lack power and synergy, even if it comes to those in an unconventional way.
