I have replaced The Immortal Sun with Myrel, Shield of Argive, which reduced the average converted mana cost of this deck from 3.89 to 3.85, because she is a more powerful version of Grand Abolisher, so she clearly works with the theme of this deck.

Would you consider either Rhystic Study or Smothering Tithe? Would you be willing to spend 2 more mana to replace Grand Abolisher with Myrel, Shield of Argive or 1 more mana to replace Despark with Anguished Unmaking, or is keeping a low mana curve a high priority for this deck?

DemonDragonJ on Which Card(s) Should Replace the …

I used to have copies of The Immortal Sun in most of my EDH decks, but I have been replacing those copies with cards that better suit the themes of those decks, so I wish to ask for advice for specific decks.

First, I am wondering about my Sen Triplets EDH deck; that deck is a very controlling deck, so one card that I am considering is Myrel, Shield of Argive, since she is a more powerful version of Grand Abolisher, although I certainly would be willing to hear other suggestions, as well. I was also considering replacing the sun with Esper Sentinel, but I am not certain if I actually need that card in that deck, with all the other sources of card advantage that that deck has.

Second, I am seeking a replacement for the sun in my Teneb, the Harvester EDH deck, but this shall be a more challenging replacement, as there are numerous cards that would work well with that deck. My first choice was Karador, Ghost Chieftain, as this is the only deck in which he would fit, and, with his inherent cost-reducing ability, he would usually cost less then 8 mana to summon, but, as good as he is, he is merely a 3/4 that allows me to cast a creature spell from my graveyard once per turn. I then considered Sepulchral Primordial, but I do not wish to raise the mana curve of this deck, and that creature is only a 5/4 for seven mana. I also am considering either Sun Titan or Angel of Indemnity, as they clearly work with the theme of this deck, but the restrictions on their abilities may limit their utility in this deck, although the encore ability of the angel is nice, as I can sacrifice the tokens that it generates before they sacrifice themselves. Then, I am considering Grave Titan, since it can easily send creatures to my opponents' graveyards, for me to steal, as well as generating tokens for me to sacrifice, so I have numerous options for that deck.

What does everyone else say about this? What cards should I use to replace The Immortal Sun in my decks?

Enchantress inclusions

Setessan Champion & Sythis, Harvest's Hand are some new and good enchantress options

Mana Fixing

Sanctum Weaver scales with all your auras

Jukai Naturalist & Herald of the Pantheon are a medallion for your enchantments

Delighted Halfling makes your commander and all legendaries uncounterable

Protection

Teferi's Protection & Flawless Manuever & Everybody Lives! are great general protection spells

Mithril Coat has flash and can protect your sigarda in a pinch and make her borderline unremovable.

Veil of Summer is OP nonsense

Myrel, Shield of Argive is a legendary Grand Abolisher with upside

Synergy Picks

Yenna, Redtooth Regent copies your auras and untaps can make you sigarda huge very quickly if you have the mana

Almost Perfect sets Sigarda's Base P/T to 9/10 and she can still be buffed

Well Rested for the buffs, life and draw all for 2 mana

Hope this helped

Crystal Chimes - Recursion

Replenish - Recursion (I have a regular and several foil ones for sale/trade, lol)

Grand Abolisher - Prevent interaction/response to aura cast. Also see Conqueror's Flail.

Flickering Ward - Trigger enchantment cast triggers and for protection

Spectra Ward - Protection

Hall of the Bandit Lord - Unsure about this one given lifeloss but you do have some lifegain to mitigate this.

Bravado - You don't go wide enough

Born to Drive - See above

Angelic Gift - Nice cantrip with evasion but not impactful enough IMO to warrant an inclusion

Squire's Devotion - Not impactful enough IMO

Regarding king-saproling's comment, Gift of immortality is amazing, highly recommended.

Enchantments are not in my wheelhouse, but I've always wanted to make an enchantment deck. Interesting boros enchantments definitely piques my curiosity. What do you feel your deck is lacking at the moment? From my limited perspective, you don't have much draw unless you have a bunch of enchantments on board to trigger one of your burst draw effects. A risky but effective strategy given you are in boros. I hope these comments helped. Let me know what you think, looking forward to your response.

LordKunai,

The Snow-Covered Swamp and Snow-Covered Plains are protection against Blood Moon. We don't need Mountain because most of the lands will be mountains in that case.

They also cannot be Swamp or Plains because then you have a potential of countering our own Tainted Pact when looking for a Razaketh, the Foulblooded or a Master of Cruelties with Kaalia of the Vast triggered ability on the stack, or when looking for that last combo piece, or a Counterspell to stop someone from winning the game. It doubles our options for basic lands but also means that they don't conflict with our intstant tutor.

Mox Diamond could replace an interaction piece like Praetor's Grasp but it is nice to pull the opponents Thassa's Oracle and then win the game with a Tainted Pact. It could also pull a more control oriented card like Hellkite Tyrant that doesn't necessarily win the game, but he can devestate some players boards, could replace a Grand Abolisher but probably Everybody Lives! because well Everybody Lives (except the player trying to Fish-Consul win that is). Chrome Mox has a low activation rate in the turns that matter (I have a tab with the calculations but I haven't update my combine rates based on new artifacts, although Mox Diamond actually improves it's rate. Rakdos Signet isn't great becuase it's a MV3 (2 to cast, 1 to activate), so probably just easy to replace that! Thrill of Possibility is good to get a Worldgorger Dragon or Razaketh, the Foulblooded if for some reason we draw it, but isn't necessary. Thoughtseize might even be better (just target yourself), but even when used on an opponent it creates card disadvantage for you and one opponent, leaving the two others with card advantage now.

Probably Rakdos Signet goes, but we have different options for sure.

To the points that wallisface made, I'd rather that WotC explores design space, including occasionally toning down the strength of certain designs/mechanics. I think it makes sense that as designs get more complex in some areas, they become more simplified/nerfed in others to slow down some power creep, and/or maintain some kind of balance.

All that being said, I think we are still getting some interesting designs. We just got another another free sac outlet that can sac creatures or artifacts, at instant speed without a once per turn restriction, in Bartolomé del Presidio, and a Grand Abolisher-esque and draw effects on Kutzil, Malamet Exemplar.

No problem dude! Glad to help, truly.

As a longtime brewer of this particular Commander, I'm definitely seeing a few cards here that I would cut in favor of more card draw, Ramp, Tutors, & Interaction to get you to your power pieces like Vilis, Broker of Blood. Please don't take this the wrong way, but it will be a shorter list to include the things that I would personally keep in the list, sans Lands. Here we go:

Creatures: Vilis, Broker of Blood, Rune-Scarred Demon, Burning-Rune Demon, Ancient Gold Dragon, Drana and Linvala, Mother of Runes, Giver of Runes, Grand Abolisher & Serra's Emissary

Artifacts: All Mana Rocks CMC 2 or less, Swiftfoot Boots & Lightning Greaves.

Enchantments: Dragon Tempest, Phyrexian Arena & Phyrexian Reclamation.

Instants: Boros Charm, Swords to Plowshares, h Path to Exile.

Sorceries: Damn, Diabolic Tutor & Seize the Spoils.

Everything outside of these ones should be replaced with value pieces imo! I'd also heavily recommend that you pick up a copy of Razaketh, the Foulblooded. It was just reprinted in Commander Masters, and is hovering around ~$8 at the time of this post! It was just like $25-$30 a little while ago. Insane. I'd also recommend looking through the Dominaria Remastered set, lots of spicy reprints in there that have taken a price plunge & could be great here like Sneak Attack & Gamble.
