I love building EDH decks using a commander that people are used to, then changing the theme or strategy of the adeck so that my opponents are caught off guard. So I decided to take apart my friend-losing Memnarch the Kleptomaniac” deck and my Brago, King Eternal deck and build Brago, The Artificer King.

MANA RAMP / MANA FIXING

Chief Engineer is super useful because with convoke you can tap him and any other creatures on the turn he comes out because convoke is not affected by summoning sickness.

Etherium Sculptor & Foundry Inspector both drop the cost artifacts by one – (That’s 28% of this deck)

Sol Ring duh. Don’t play it before turn 4 though. That makes you a target. Unless of course you can make it so that there is no one to target you…

Solemn Simulacrum, AKA the Sad Robot – he is a must include in basically any deck, but more so in this one, flickering a bunch for extra lands, plus he is a golem creature type, so Blade Splicer & Wing Splicer make him tougher.

Chromatic Lantern mana fixes and then Blinkmoth Urn adds both a little positive politics and a healthy dose of colorless mana to the battlefield, and everyone has more fun when they have more mana.

CARD DRAW

“I would rather have too much card draw in my deck than too little, because I would rather play draw spells and feel like I’m playing magic, instead of just sitting there top-decking.” - Josh Lee Kwai (Paraphrase)

The Cantrips – cards that draw 1 card when they are played

Wall of Omens, Ichor Wellspring, Faerie Mechanist, Sea Gate Oracle, Traveler's Cloak, and Dream Fracture all draw a card ETB.

The best of these is obviously The Faerie. He hits the artifact theme in his card type, and he brings card advantage with his “tutoring” skill. Plus flickering him is an amazing way to get to some of the best cards in the deck.

Ichor Wellspring and Solemn Simulacrum draw a card when they hit the graveyard.

Straight Card Draw

I’ve never played Thoughtcast for more than the cost of Divination, and I often play it for less.

“If you wanted to give me a deck that was 70 Mulldrifters and land, I would play that deck.” - Some guest on the Command Zone Podcast (possibly Josh Lee Kwai) Brago, King Eternal + Mulldrifter ’s effect - broken.

Finally, Foresee. It’s just good.

Repeatable Card Draw

Having Puresteel Paladin out and flickering equipment to draw cards has lead to several turns of drawing 3+ cards FROM THE PALADIN ALONE.

Trading Post does so much - paired with Ichor Wellspring, Solemn Simulacrum, or Sharding Sphinx, and that’s some okay card draw.

I like Padeem, Consul of Innovation, even though he’s smug. The draw on this card isn’t the point of having the card at all, but it’s a nice bonus when one of my four, five, or six drop artifacts comes out.

My personal favorite card draw artifact: Staff of Nin. Ping someone every turn and draw an additional card.

When Brago, King Eternal can’t come out and play

Deadeye Navigator – Blink anybody, then blink him and attach him to someone else and blink them too!

Flickerwisp – Works well doing what Brago does incase he is stuck in the Command Zone, but WITH Brago, I can flicker anything with a ETB, then flicker Flickerwisp, then flicker that same card AGAIN. coughs, then whispers Myr Battlesphere

Momentary Blink & Eerie Interlude – They only flicker creatures underneath Brago’s thumb, but they are great for; avoiding board wipes and target removal; reusing ETB effects; general annoyance.

Conjurer's Closet – flicker one creature, (like Seagate oracle or Blade Splicer) once per turn for free? Yes please.

Brago’s favorite artifacts

I feel like Mirrorworks is underplayed... Oh what’s that? Two Sol Rings? Two sets of Lightning Greaves? Two Myr Battlespheres?

Shimmer Myr + Unwinding Clock = The Artifact of Kruphix

Trading Post – Josh Lee Kwai has said “If you can have one card that does 2 things instead of just one, pick that card, it’s just better.” Trading post is a 4 for 1, so yeah, it’s an auto include. Coupled with Unwinding Clock or Synod Artificer it’s 2 mana artifact recursion each turn. Coupled with Blade Splicer, Master Splicer, Myr Battlesphere or Sharding Sphinx it’s 1 mana card draw.

Darksteel Foundrey – It says it there in the text. Play a Supreme Verdict with this out, given the right conditions (meaning mostly artifact creatures on the board), and the game is yours. Especially in you have an Eerie Interlude in hand.

Brago’s Cleverest Soldiers

Leonin Shikari + Puresteel Paladin & Swiftfoot Boots, Whispersilk Cloak, or Lightning Greaves – Oh, you wanted to target him? Oh look, now he has hexproof – Oh! Now she has Shroud - NO WAIT! YOU CAN’T TOUCH ANY OF ‘EM!!!

Wing Splicer and Blade Splicer – I know they don’t seem to troublesome, what with only one golem each, but play an Eerie Interlude and Momentary Blink right before your turn, then that’s 5 3/3’s in the air swinging.

Grand Architect + Pili-Pala – The only infinite combo I put in here on purpose. Pay 1 Blue mana to turn Pili-Pala Blue. Tap him, then untap him using that mana, generating 1 mana = ∞ Mana of any colors.

Grand Architect & Sharding Sphinx - A 5/5 flyer that can tap for 2 artifact mana and can also create 2/2 Blue Thopters that Tap for 2 artifact only mana. Yupperino.

Accessorize Yourself

You probably know that Brago, King Eternal likes his sword, but I bet you didn’t know that he likes shoes and capes too. Get it Mr. Thang.

Swiftfoot Boots, Lightning Greaves, Trailblazer's Boots, Whispersilk Cloak, Traveler's Cloak, and Steel of the Godhead: Unblockable AND untouchable is not only INCREDIBLY dangerous with commander damage, but with Brago’s effect, it’s broken. Plus characters like Myr Battlesphere, Medomai the Ageless, & Relic Seeker benefit from the unblockable effects quite nicely.

Power Players

Lavinia of the Tenth is valued at about $0.25, which makes other players see both her and me as not much of a threat. And while detain normally isn’t amazing, but doing it to all CMC creatures of 4 or less (that includes tokens at a CMC of 0) for eternity with Brago’s effect? Broken. And protection from red is a plus. Incase you got here and are thinking, “this cat is one crazy mama-jama playing this card,” check the reminder text; First, it says “ALL NONLAND PERMANENTS,” (That’s a good sign to pay attention). Second, and their activated abilities can’t be activated. No Sol Ring, no Monilith, no Divining Top, you get the picture.

Myr Battlesphere on its own usually signals someone trying to take the win. Flickering it repeatedly to get more Myr 1/1’s makes for a tough to beat situation.

Pentavus – Drop it in, pay 5 after combat damage, flicker with Brago, King Eternal, pay 5 on the next turn, now it’s a 10/10 – OR Sac those 1/1’s with Trading Post.

Glassdust Hulk gets a bad rap. 5 CMC for a 3/4 with cycling and conditional pumping? That’s not great… but think of it this way – Shimmer Myr is on the field, swing with Glassdust Hulk (who might be pumped by the Splicer Sisters) then flash in Myr Battlesphere. That 3/4 is now an 8/9 unblockable, and if you have Mirrorworks out and an available 2 mana, you can get another Myr Battlesphere and that 8/9 Glassdust Hulk is now a 13/14 unblockable. Someone is probably dead at this point, and next turn, you have two Battlesphere’s and 8 Myr 1/1’s. That’s game baby.

Medomai the Ageless + Steel of the Godhead – extra turns, 6/6 flyer with lifelink and unblockable. Nuff Said.

REMOVAL

Tempest of Light, Dispeller's Capsule, Path to Exile, Ghost Quarter. One for Artifacts, one for enchantments, one for creatures, and one for lands. Probably not enough, but hey, that’s why this community exists.

COUNTERSPELLS

Dissolve, Counterspell, Dream Fracture.

TUTORS

Fabricate, Trophy Mage, Trinket Mage, and Relic Seeker.

Trinket Mage is my personal favorite, because when I flicker him, if I already have out my Sol Ring and Dispeller's Capsule, I can tutor for Ancient Den, Seat of the Synod, or Darksteel Citadel.

Relic Seeker is a bit trickier, but I can have him become renowned, search for an equipment, flicker him, therefore removing the +1/+1 counter, and letting him do it again.

DECK FIXING

Mystic Speculation – This card should be in your blue deck.

Oh and New Benalia & Dissolve. Scry that 10th land down to Nyx.

RECURSION

Sun Titan, Argivian Restoration, Trading Post.

BOARD WIPES

Supreme Verdict, Day of Judgment, and Planar Cleansing.
