One Drop Rainbow Explosion (Budget EDH)

Commander / EDH* Budget Control Five Color Theme/Gimmick

Futuremonk

The crazy idea of this deck is to make a deck full of the best ultra-budget one drops (or pseudo-one drops). And with only a few exceptions, almost all the cards cost less than $1 (at the time this list was made).

The most notable exceptions are Child of Alara , the deck's commander and only board wipe, and Hellkite Overlord , Godsire , Prince of Thralls , Empyrial Archangel , and Sphinx Sovereign , which can all be cheated into play with their respective Heralds ( Dragon's Herald , Behemoth's Herald , Demon's Herald , Angel's Herald , and Sphinx's Herald ). The activation cost is more than one mana, and they require you to sacrifice three creatures, but the ability to tutor them up and put them into play at instant speed is almost like they're free. They're a bargain, anyway, and they are all decent threats.

They also pair really well with Child of Alara in that it can be sacrificed to pay the cost of any of the Heralds' abilities and its board wipe trigger will happen before the card you tutor up will come into play. Then not only will you have an 8/8 creature with an upside (or whatever), but you will be the only player with anything but lands. The board wipe trigger requires you to put Child of Alara in your graveyard, but the delve cards and even some of the graveyard hate can be used to get it back into your command zone to cast again.

Other pseudo-one drops include several delve cards. Technically, Soulflayer is a pseudo-two drop, but there are enough keyword abilities among the other creatures it seemed like a necessary inclusion. I also included Necropolis Fiend for some repeatable removal that takes advantage of continuing to fill your graveyard.

Among actual one drops, there is plenty of removal as well as ways to mill yourself to keep delving. There are also a few creatures with hybrid mana costs, which makes them both easier to cast and better targets for the Heralds' sacrifice abilities.

The other exceptions regarding mana cost are Null Profusion and Recycle , but they seemed like a good fit: They turn all of your spells and lands into cantrips, and you can get rid of them by sacrificing Child of Alara should you find yourself with no cards in hand and in need of a draw step again. And by the time you can cast either of them, you probably won't have more than two cards in hand anyway.

I'm not sure if this idea is too crazy to work or too crazy not to work. I'm starting to think it's the latter....
