Empyrial Archangel Discussion

I’ve always loved Empyrial Archangel it looks like art you’d see in a monastery or a cathedral.

Empyrial Archangel can be difficult to deal with for decks that can't do at least 8 damage in a single turn. Might be better in the sideboard?

Chancellor of the Tangle can pull double duty as a target, and letting you drop Overgrown Battlement or Wall of Roots a turn earlier.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I'll be testing the list out on MTGO once the new set is released, and changing the numbers around to see which targets are the most effective against each deck.

Empyrial Archangel could be good. I can see some games where the shroud makes it better than Platinum Emperion. But if you're facing a deck that can deal > 8 damage in a turn (like Death's Shadow, or Bogles) then Platinum Emperion is probably the better choice. But I'll need to see what those match-ups are like first.

What's your opinion on Harm's Way? It can possibly one-and-a-half-for-one the opponent by making them burn their own critters. Goblin Guide, Grim Lavamancer and Eidolon of the Great Revel all get btfo. Monastery Swiftspear is the only common creature that could survive it.

Opal-Eye, Konda's Yojimbo has an effect that might be useful to the strategy: it can soak Lava Spikes and other player-only damage (unlike Spellskite), and can't be countered by Skullcrack (unlike prevention and lifegain). And while on the subject of damage redirection, Empyrial Archangel would be nearly impossible for Burn to win through. And it can be pulled out with Angel's Herald if you can run Bant colors. This is might be too slow for modern, and might require too much of a rework.

One amusing possibility might be Hedron-Field Purists. With one counter on it, it turns all their Lightning Bolt into Shock. It also hates Grapeshot, Empty the Warrens and Walking Ballista, potentially making this more competitive against other decks.

You could perhaps redirect the damage instead of preventing it entirely but you would preventing it from hitting you which would help boost your Selfless Squire. I'll try keep to the white theme for you as much as possible but what I have found is: Captain's Maneuver, Empyrial Archangel, Hazduhr the Abbot, Mirror Strike, Sivvi's Valor - I'm not sure on the play of this but my assumption is that damage may start targeting the above creatures so that they may target you instead, so this instant could have that damage target you which you could then activate one of the previous cards to have it target them? due to the low cost of the instant of course as there are other creatures out there that you can have the damage target another target creature such as Oracle's Attendants for example. Turn the Tables is an excellent way to have the opponent punished for attacking. As mentioned above, I think Azor's Elocutors could be a great Win Con.

As you can see there are quite a few examples of what you could go with. I have just used http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Search/Default.aspx?action=advanced&text=+%5Bwould%5D+%5Bbe%5D+%5Bdealt%5D+%5Bdamage%5D+%5Btarget%5D+%5Bcreature%5D+%5Binstead%5D+!%5Bprevent%5D&color=+%5BW%5D (I'm sorry, I'm still new here and I can't figure out how to use the link function lol) and i'm sure that you could find something among this list that might be of more help to you :)

Yes, I would say that Griselbrand is the correct choice in 80% of situations. Unless iona is outright winning the game for you (say, you are playing versus death and taxes), it is not a correct choice. Sire makes 0 impact on the board versus most decks (6/4 are just poor stats) and tidesprout tyrant is slow af.

Griseslbrand can draw you 7-14 new cards prior to kicking the bucket, which really keeps you in the game if the turn 1 play does not pan out.

Consider Empyrial Archangel as a cool reanimation target that deals with a lot of annoying situations and is much better than Tyrant at sealing the game.

enpc on Naya, Boros or Selesnya Angel ...

You could go bant angels with Jenara, Asura of War as your commander. This gives you access to Empyrial Archangel who is just outright dumb with Avacyn, Angel of Hope. You also get card advantage which helps (selesnya is not known for card advantage).
