"Damn Godzilla... You're mistaken if you think your powers are a match for Mechagodzilla."

-Alien Supreme Leader Kuronuma

When the idea for Ikoria came out, I instantly predicted Godzilla themed cards. When it turned out I was right, I literally danced with joy! I mean, I've loved Godzilla since I was 4 years old, and now I got to play with them in my favorite hobby! However, my original plan was ruined swiftly. You see, Mechagodzilla has always been my favorite monster, always will be. I was expecting him to be legendary, and therefore be a legal commander. It turned out he isn't. Regardless I wanted to make a deck with my favorite monster. In a creative rut, I went back to one of my favorite Showa era movies, Godzilla Vs. Mechagodzilla. Watching those vintage monsters shoot technicolor beams of awesome destruction lit up a fire inside me. I immediately began working on a deck that reenacted the movie I loved. That's where this deck has sprung from. I certainly hope you appreciate the amount of research and dedication that's gone into this theme.
For the king of monsters himself, we have 3 cards. And yes, I know Yidaro is Shin Godzilla from the 2014 film of the same name, but I've decided to include him for consistency purposes. The big man isn't super complicate to play with, though Zilortha, Strength Incarnate does alter some of creatures in a meaningful way. For example, if Anguirus is wearing his Riot Spikes, with Godzilla out, he becomes a 6/6. The other two aren't all that big, if you already have a tutor for Zilortha and don't have the mana for these two, cycling them is a viable option, especially in the case of Yidaro. In terms of tutors, several cards can fetch each one, so it's relatively easy to get him out, though if you go for Titanoth Rex, be aware of your land count. Overall, Godzilla is a strong attack, blocker, and it's always awesome to announce you cast Godzilla.

For a monster that only appears in two godzilla movies ever (Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla and Final Wars) I'm surprised King Caesar got two different printings. I don't have a problem with this, I mean, I've got no beef with the king, but really? Mechagodzilla has five different movies and only got one card. Anyway, rant aside, both of King Caesar's cards involve the mutate ability, which I've only taken advantage of twice in a game because I had to stop someone from winning the game. I suppose if you were in the middle of executing ゴSTORY TECHNIQUEゴ you could mutate one King Caesar on top of the other, though this really isn't necessary. I've also thought that mutating King Caesar onto any Godzilla represents them teaming up against Mechagodzilla in the final battle of the movie. I like the idea overall, but I think it'll be a sub option for now since I already have Band Together and Unlikely Aid representing their team up. In terms of gameplay, Caesar is a decent attacker/blocker, but really excels when Snapdax, Apex of the Hunt is out with Saskia the Unyielding, dealing 12 damage total every turn adds up fast. The one thing that frustrates me is how neither version is made better by Zilortha, Strength Incarnate, so maybe that's an argument to mutate.

In Godzilla Raids Again, Godzilla fires a white radioactive mist called the Incandescent Light (白熱光 Hakunetsu Hikari) from his mouth. This attack can destroy military weapons and cause raging fires, and is also used by Godzilla to finish off Anguirus. Starting in King Kong vs. Godzilla, the incandescent light is replaced by a more focused, blue beam called the Atomic Breath (放射熱線 Hōsha Nessen, lit. Radioactive Heat Ray). Godzilla uses his atomic breath to destroy buildings and military weaponry, and to burn enemy monsters. While it is effective in hurting most of Godzilla's opponents, both Rodan and King Ghidorah have demonstrated resistance to it. Godzilla's atomic breath reaches a temperature in excess of 100,000 degrees Celsius. It is unknown whether Godzilla always possessed his atomic breath, or if it was an ability he gained from exposure to the hydrogen bomb.

Cards:

In Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, Godzilla found a way to generate powerful magnetic fields from his body after being struck several times by lightning, which proved devastating against his metallic foe. This is the only time Godzilla ever used this power.

Card:

As attributed to his size, weight and mass, Godzilla has displayed varied levels of physical strength that are, at the very least, sufficient enough to lift weights exceeding 2,000 tons and smash skyscrapers. Godzilla boasts immense arm strength, which allows him to lift heavy objects or deliver powerful physical blows. He has been depicted lifting and throwing monsters in excess of his own weight, such as King Ghidorah, Hedorah, Mechagodzilla and others. Godzilla's punches are known as Megaton Punch (メガトン•パンチ Megaton Panchi). He is adept in various martial arts techniques, such as boxing and judo throws, and sprinted at high speeds in episode 21 of Zone Fighter to rescue Zone Fighter from Jellar. Godzilla is able to use his massive legs and feet to stomp on objects such as buildings and vehicles, destroying them instantly, as well as to kick boulders at or directly kick his enemies. Godzilla may also elect to simply use his mass to destroy buildings or knock over enemy monsters by ramming them.

Godzilla's long tail is also a formidable weapon in addition to balancing his body and allowing him to walk on land. It has been shown to be very flexible and powerful, able to lash out quickly and topple over buildings and enemy monsters. Godzilla can use his tail to propel himself into the air and pounce at enemies. In Godzilla vs. Megalon, he was able to slide on his tail a great distance to deliver a devastating kick. In all of his incarnations, he has been shown to have powerful jaws, sharp teeth, and claws, although these are more prominent in some incarnations than in others. Rarely, Godzilla also showed the ability to use his dorsal fins as a weapon, such as in Godzilla vs. Hedorah, where he used them to cut into Hedorah during the flying scene. Godzilla's head is very hard, which allows him to headbutt his enemies or bounce incoming projectiles such as boulders off of it. Godzilla's large mouth is extremely strong and filled with sharp teeth, making his bite lethal to other monsters. He killed the First Generation Anguirus by biting down on his throat and disarmed Ebirah by biting off both of his claws.

Godzilla also sometimes prefers to battle his opponents from a distance, either by blasting them with his atomic breath or throwing objects such as boulders at them.

Cards:

King Caesar's most notable ability is his ability to capture the energy beams of enemy monsters into one eye, and fire it back at the target through the other. This is known as his Prism Eye (プリズム式眼球 Purizumu-Shiki Gankyū, lit. Prismatic Eyeball). He used this twice with great effectiveness against Mechagodzilla before the cyborg wisely changed tactics and used his missiles instead.

Cards:

When it first emerged from Mount Fuji, Mechagodzilla wore a pseudo-reptilian skin that allowed it to almost seamlessly resemble Godzilla. This disguise was damaged in battle with Anguirus, and eventually completely removed in battle with Godzilla himself.

Card:

Mechagodzilla fires a rainbow-colored optical laser called the Space Beam (スペースビーム Supēsu Bīmu), which is capable of destroying objects instantaneously. The rebuilt Mechagodzilla 2, in addition to its Space Beams, was armed with a Laser Firing Apparatus (レーザー発射装置 Rēzā Hassha Sōchi) on its "back-up" Head Controller (ヘッドコントローラー Heddo Contorōrā), which it utilized after its head was removed by Godzilla.

Card:

Mechagodzilla has an apparatus mounted in its neck called the Trace Device (トレイス装置 Toreisu Sōchi), which allows for the firing of a large quantity of small missiles. This ability goes unused in both of Mechagodzilla's film appearances. Mechagodzilla possesses missiles at the tips of all of its fingers, known simply as the Finger Missiles (フィンガーミサイル Fingā Misairu) or Space Finger Missiles (スペースフィンガーミサイル Supēsu Fingā Misairu). These missiles have massive destructive power, and are immediately replaced after each shot, allowing for virtually continuous firing.

Card:

A shutter on Mechagodzilla's chest can slide open, revealing a device which can fire a high-power electromagnetic beam, referred to as the Cross Attack Beam (クロスアタックビーム Kurosu Atakku Bīmu). This orange-colored laser was strong enough to slice through a large rock formation.

Card:

Mechagodzilla's tail was armed with a sharp blade called the Unisot (ユニソット Yunisotto), which acted as a flight stabilizer. Although never utilized, this utensil is detachable and could be used offensively to attack an opponent behind it.

Card:

Mechagodzilla possesses propulsion jets in its feet named Jet Fire (ジェットファイヤー Jetto Faiyā), which enable flight at Mach 5. Mechagodzilla was shown to still be able to use its weaponry when in midair, specifically its Space Beams, by aligning its head to face forward.

Card:

Although not displayed in either of its film appearances, Mechagodzilla is said to be able to launch flaming, 500,000°C bullets from its nose in an attack referred to as Desto-Fire (デストファイヤー Desuto Faiyā). Mechagodzilla does possess this ability in video games such as Godzilla: Battle Legends and Godzilla: Unleashed, where it functions like a flamethrower projected from its nostrils.

Card:

Mechagodzilla is equipped with an antenna to receive the orders of the Black Hole Planet 3 Aliens. A Super Radar (スーパーレーダー Sūpā Rēdā) was also attached, which enables Mechagodzilla to locate things, namely enemies, underwater and underground.

Card:

Mechagodzilla's body is covered entirely with Space Titanium, an extraterrestrial element with a strength ten times that of regular steel.

Card:

Mechagodzilla's head and neck can rotate 360 degrees horizontally. If the robot is fighting an opponent while another is approaching it from behind, it can rotate its head to face the opponent behind him to fire its Space Beams at them. This ability is also imperative to the creation of its Defense Neo Barrier.

Card:

When Mechagodzilla rapidly spins its head while firing beams from its eyes, a shield is formed known as the Defense Neo Barrier (ディフェンスネオバリヤー Difensu Neo Bariyā). This shield was effective in blocking both Godzilla's atomic breath and attempted physical attacks.

Card:

Anguirus' greatest asset in combat is his spiked carapace. He often slams his back into opponents in order to injure them with his spikes. In Godzilla vs. Gigan, Anguirus launched himself at King Ghidorah while Godzilla held him still from behind. In Godzilla: Rulers of Earth, Godzilla lifted Anguirus by his tail and used him like a flail, swinging his spikes into Mecha-King Ghidorah's chest and damaging the cyborg.

Card:

In many Godzilla video games and in the film Godzilla: Final Wars, Anguirus was shown to be able to retreat inside of his carapace and curl into a ball, an ability dubbed the Fierce Dragon Monster Ball Violent Bullet (暴龍怪球烈弾 Bō Ryū Kai Kyū Retsu-dan) or simply Anguirus Ball (アンギラスボール Angirasu Bōru). This allows Anguirus to travel quickly by rolling while also damaging any structures or enemies in his path.
