Goblin Chirurgeon Discussion

ScryLord on my first attempt at Krenko, Mob Boss EDH!

Wow! This is pretty darn good for a first attempt. There's a whole lot of Goblin tribal cards out there, it'd take forever to list them all out so here are a "few" suggestions: - Path of Ancestry - Goblin King - Goblin Grenade - Goblin Chieftain - Dragon Fodder - Skirk Prospector - Goblin Bombardment - Throne of the God-Pharaoh - Mogg War Marshal - Goblin Chirurgeon - Last-Ditch Effort - Goblin Wardriver - Goblin Bushwhacker - Skirk Fire Marshal - Goblin Rabblemaster - Shared Animosity - Goblin War Strike - Goblin Piledriver - Goblin Sledder - Legion Loyalist - Grenzo, Havoc Raiser - Goblin Rally - Metallic Mimic - Adaptive Automaton - Goblin Trashmaster - Quest for the Goblin Lord - Eldrazi Monument - Hordeling Outburst - Goblin Offensive ... and a whole lot more that I didn't add because I'm pretty sure this is way more than enough. Take your pick. Good luck with your deck!

I would suggest focusing on having large numbers of low cost Goblins and ones with utility rather than big ones. Battle Squadron, Voracious Dragon, and Berserkers' Onslaught could be cut.

You might cut some of the anthems, or just play more efficient ones. Vanquisher's Banner gives card draw which is really helpful for this deck. Adaptive Automaton is worth a shot as a 2 CMC Goblin lord. Goblin King gives mountainwalk which could be relevant in multiplayer games. The new Goblin Trashmaster is a lord that also provides artifact removal. Ogre Battledriver and In the Web of War give haste and also pump your Goblins, so could replace Hammer of Purphoros.

Goblin Lackey and Warren Instigator can put into play any Goblin from your hand. Goblin Chirurgeon can protect Krenko. Sensation Gorger and Slate of Ancestry provide more wheeling.

Mana Echoes could be good to generate mana whenever you make or play Goblins, and also goes infinite with Umbral Mantle or Sword of the Paruns on Krenko if you would include those in your deck. Thornbite Staff can untap Krenko for free whenever a Goblin dies, so it goes infinite with any sac outlet. Ashnod's Altar is another good one.

Cool theme! Here's some suggestions:

I have a copy of Goblin Chirurgeon and it worked really well in my Krenko, Mob Boss version of the deck. I didn't include it here, Paranoiac, because i wasn't sure it had the same impact: Krenko, Mob Boss is a goblin and that extra protection was really nice, but with Purphoros, God of the Forge already being really resilient i don't see a good use for it.

The thing is: after a couple of games i realised that one really cool aspect of this deck is that it does not care about board presence (most of the time) so board wipes dont affect me so much. I have great utility goblins like Goblin Welder but not many creatures actually worth fighting for it's survivability.

One of the best changes i made was removing Coat of Arms and adding a Eldrazi Monument mainly to be able to push for damage with evasion and block creatures with flying.

I see. That certainly would have backfired [still a little goblin like ;)].

To help with board wipes do you think something like Goblin Chirurgeon would be beneficial to you? It might be a good sac outlet for tokens to protect other creatures.

Hey Nick it's Owen!

Love the look of the deck so far- I can tell you've put a lot of work into designing it and it really shows, dude. As a first deck, this is definitely a helluva lot better than the first deck I ever made on my own. I do however want to give you a heads up about some things that you may want to change after playing the deck some- I figured giving some feedback on the list itself now might help you with maintaining a direction once you start experimenting with switching out cards!

If you check out your mana curve, you'll see that there's a heavy leaning towards 3 cost spells in your deck- this is good! The lower the Avg. CMC is on a decklist, the better. This means you'll be able to play more of your deck before other players- in an aggro build you don't want to get to the point that you are hard casting Kozelik because you want to win before then (I know he's in for the graveyard shuffle but I just used him for example because of his high cost). I will point out though that you've still got a heavy leaning on the mana heavier side of 3 which brings your Avg. CMC to 3.59 with around 5 cards that cost 7 CMC and then reaching up to 10 with Kozelik. Because of this- you're going to need more ramp than you currently have in the deck. Solemn Simulacrum and Burnished Hart aren't the kind of ramp you want here simply because they are expensive mana-wise and will only fetch you lands (these are good in multi colored decks because you're trying to fix your board to have all the colors you need). In mono colored decks the best ramp is cheap colorless mana rocks because they'll ramp you hella fast and you don't necessarily need the extra color. I highly recommend placing in Fellwar Stone, Mind Stone, Wayfarer's Bauble, and Coldsteel Heart. You'll be overtaking Matt in mana at that rate, especially since you can play all of those pieces of ramp before dropping a Simulacrum or Burnished Hart, or especially a Caged Sun which costs 6 and normally leads to an endgame strategy like paying for Aggravated Assault.

Second, I'd actually recommend running less lands- in fact you can replace some of those lands with the colorless ramp I mentioned before. Lands aren't needed as heavily in mono color as multi color, so it can be safe to run as few as 32 or 33 and the deck still work very efficiently.

The cards you've got in here are fantastic and I can't wait to see them in action, but when you're looking for more cards in the future I have these highly recommended here for ya:

  1. Brightstone Ritual - With this you can very easily kill the entire board paired with Aggravated Assault or Bonfire of the Damned.

  2. Mob Justice - Another fantastic wincon that can be used to either close out a game or really drive down someone's health.

  3. Magewright's Stone - This one is brutally good for untapping Krenko

  4. Reckless One - big boi real fast

  5. Goblin Chirurgeon - This one is just so brutally good. Every goblin krenko makes suddenly becomes a flesh shield to keep him from dying.

Anywho- these are just my recommendations to take with a grain of salt! The deck really does look great and I'm very much looking forward to seeing your goblin swarm in action. Well done, my dude.

Ya boi, Owen

The IB deck is a lot of fun to play. I added Kusari-Gama thinking that it could work but I then found out through play testing that as soon as I sacrifice the creature, the equipment falls off and then damage is delt but I can still trigger it as long as Shared Animosity is pumping my creatures enough to board wipe.

But in my meta there are a lot of Derevi, Empyrial Tactician, Rafiq of the Many, Captain Sisay. Just heavy counter/bounce magic, board wipes, and wheels. IB does kill at least one person in a 4 man pod but I die almost immediately afterwards. My board state (when I kill that one person) usually has Goblin Chirurgeon, Goblin King/Goblin Warchief, Krenko, Mob Boss, Blood Moon, Mana Web, Price of Glory, and Shared Animosity. I am very much still pleased with the deck. Just giving feed back as to what types of meta it has a hard time with (if you don't already know).

I did have a huge favor to ask of you. I love death and taxes style decks. If you swing at me we both lose stuff but you will lose more. I run Shattergang Brothers and it can be mean. I just want a new deck that mimics death and taxes. I have my eyes set on Michiko Konda, Truth Seeker, and Darien, King of Kjeldor. But a Daretti, Scrap Savant deck would be awesome! I know those decks are mono colored but I am not only wanting mono colors, it just happened like that.

I was also thinking that I want to do a artifact heavy, deals damage based off cards target player has in hand over or under a certain amount like...The Rack, Ankh of Mishra, Ebony Owl Netsuke, Jinxed Idol, Jinxed Ring, Mask of Intolerance, Thumbscrews, Scalding Tongs, Iron Maiden, Misers' Cage just to name a few hahaha, massive card draw. No real intent to win through combat damage but maybe taking an extra turn or mass artifact over run. I would like my commander to be someone who can consistantly put out artifacts and so I have picked Muzzio, Visionary Architect or Padeem, Consul of Innovation (unless you know of one better). I am sorry this comment is this long. Thank you for all the help...

ZombieTribalFTW please explain how the combo is supposed to work. As I see it, Goblin Chirurgeon doesnt help. First, you cant regenerate Krenko, Mob Boss if you have sacrificed him. Second, even if you could do so, a regenerated creature becomes tapped so you wouldnt be able to reuse his ability.

Of course, if you have enough gobbos out, you can produce enough mana with Skirk Prospector to keep casting Krenko over and over again. But then you dont need the Chirurgeon. Right?

By the way, awesome budget deck hosshughes. But you missed a great opportunity for a pun: should be called the GOBfather
