One of my first ever Commanders, I always find myself coming back to Hapatra. Consistently a blast- although typing this I admit to some slight nervousness regarding a potential jinx- nonetheless, I present the most recent variation of my Hapatra EDH deck. No longer “snakes on a plane” this deck has graduated names to NEGATIVE1. I am quite proud of this name. A little more subtle. Anywho, here are some specs:

I see a lot of Hapatra decks (more like a few, just before writing this) and feel they are mostly streamlined towards the same goal of -1/-1 counters and making Sneks. However, ime everytime I pull out Hapatra, whether at an LGS or kitchen table, someone worriedly asks “oh are you running an infect deck?”

I’d like to clear this up. This deck is NOT a poison/toxic/infect deck. (Typing this out I notice I just maybe don’t know what I’m taking about, perhaps I’m just misunderstanding?) the Wincon is NOT through infect damage, this deck has NO intention of poisoning players and absolutely does NOT care about giving players poison or infect or really any player specific counters, really.

What this deck DOES care about is Negative 1-1 counters, on creatures. It cares about getting Haphatra out and swinging by T3. A byproduct of the -1/-1 counters is some board control, naturally. Politicking is pretty big with this deck, and I should warn you (if you haven’t gathered) this deck will make you noticed at the table, for better or worse. You have to deal combat damage most every turn, so it is possible to end up focusing on the one player without blockers. Personally I enjoy politicking my attacks, to avoid targeting one person. Some examples “if you let Haphatra through to deal you 2 combat damage, I will use the counter to take out other players threat” get creative:)

Another thing I should mention is that this deck is focusing on QUANTITY not quality. That means no anthems, no Beastmaster ascension, no +1/+1 counters no buffs for the snakes. These snakes are disposable resources and should be kept that way. Skullclamp is worthless if the snakes are 2/2s. One of the major win cons involves killing off snakes to deal mass damage to all opponents.

Things like poison tip archer, blood artist,Zulaport cutthroat, and/or Meathook massacre plus blowfly infestation is fun. There are probably too many loops to wire them all down, but some notables include Devoted Druid and Quillspike Jaheira for mana dork Sneks Vampiric hexmage and dark depths

Hope y’all enjoy!! Ssssss
