BG stax shell with Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons at helm.

What.

Show

This used to be my Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest deck, then I switched it to Hapatra for the following reasons:

• Hapatra is able to break stax parity with her snakes, unlike Mazirek.

• Lower-CMC commander makes it easier to cast her if she dies.

The deck is a little more reliant on the commander, but not much since I included more token producers outside of her.

The actual deck wins by grinding down opponents' resources with cards like Smokestack, and then beat down with the massive army of sneks you have. Beastmaster Ascension helps speed up the process very much.

Another means of winning is through the attrition of life drain: Zulaport Cutthroat, Blood Artist, and Obelisk Spider all help either soften up the opponent, or win the game through opponents' life loss.

Budget

Show

My budget for the complete deck is unlimited, however I can only really afford cards ~$15-20 since I’m sadly not paid enough. :p

Combos

Show

There are two types of combos listed here: synergy and infinites. Pretty self-explanatory.

Synergy

• Smokestack is the primary star piece in this deck, and it's important to be able to recover it with cards like Buried Ruin. You're guaranteed to break parity with it if you have any of these cards: Drownyard Temple, Tendershoot Dryad, Awakening Zone, Nissa, Voice of Zendikar, Creakwood Liege, From Beyond, and/or Reassembling Skeleton. If you have a means of distributing -1/-1 counters, you also have Flourishing Defenses, Nest of Scarabs, and/or Hapatra herself.

• Poliferating from cards like the Contaigon artifacts and Grim Affliction can also help planeswalkers and cards like Tangle Wire (in the future) and Beastmaster Ascension.

Infinite

There are two infinite combos here that are purely coincidence:

• Blowfly Infestation + Hapatra, Nest of Scarabs, or Flourishing Defenses, along with a 1/1 and the ability to put a -1/-1 counter on a creature. You get a token, put a -1/-1 counter on it, it dies, spawning another, and you can rinse and repeat! You'll need a card like Zulaport Cutthroat or even Bitter Ordeal to actually win but it's a nice combo.

• Devoted Druid + Hapatra + Ivy Lane Denizen creates infinite sneks and green mana, by putting the +1/+1 counters on Devoted Druid to cancel out the -1/-1 counters. Hapatra can be switched out with Flourishing Defenses for this combo.

Thanks for reading! If you enjoyed it, a +1 is always much appreciated!
