I've wanted a fun +1/+1 counter deck for a while but so often they turn into just smashing with big creatures to win. Shalai and Hallar helps change that, offering an additional source of damage beyond combat.

Updates Add

A handful of changes to catch up on the fun new toys added in recent sets. At this point I'm taking out good to great cards to make room for other good to great cards.

One of the principles I'm focusing on is ways to add a lot of counters, quickly. With my commander in play, that turns to direct damage I can use to kill a player. So some of the ways to add counters over time are less desirable and I don't want as many "if you would add counters, add that many plus 1 of those" effects.

  • Add Innkeeper's Talent, remove Conclave Mentor. Instead of adding an additional +1/+1 counter, how about something that (eventually) doubles those counters? Also, the Innkeeper's Talen adds counters on its own and offers a little protection. Great!
  • Add Fangs of Kalonia, remove Virtue of Loyalty. Fangs can give me a little boost early on or potentially be game-ending later on. Doubling all the counters across all my creatures with my commander in play can be devestating to my opponents. I'm sad to cut the Virtue but it's just a little too slow. I want lots of counters added quickly.
  • Add Bristly Bill, Spine Sower, remove Resourceful Defense. Bristly Bill!! A handsome little druid who adds counters reliably and gives me an option to double all my +1/+1 counters. Just perfect. Sad to cut Resourceful Defense as it was a good backup for when I lose some or all of my creatures but I have to make room and I still have The Ozolith.
  • Add Goldvein Hydra, remove Vigor. This hydra scales with the game, as most hydras do, giving me early +1/+1 counters if I need them or a late big boost of counters. Bonus that when my opponents kill it, I get a bunch of treasures. Vigor on the other hand just puts a target on my back and my opponents typically avoid damaging my creatures just until they can kill off Vigor. So it never gets to do the thing.
  • Add Railway Brawler, remove Conclave Sledge-Captain. Sledge-Captain is very good but I think the Brawler is better because the counters happen immediately, I don't have to deal combat damage first.
  • Add Annie Joins Up, remove Hamza, Guardian of Arashin. Annie Joins Up doubles my commander's trigger for double the damage. That's worth it alone but there are some other Legendary creatures here too that can benefit from this doubling effect. Hamza seems like it should be good but drawing it early game is a terrible feel bad and late game feels underwhelming when I want to be closing out a game.
  • Add Kutzil, Malamet Exemplar, remove Beast Within. Trying more protetion than removal. Kutzil synergizes with the +1/+1 counter plan, providing a little extra card draw and, importantly, protection from my opponents on my own turn. Please stop interfering with my game plan, guys! Just stop!
