This deck is built around maintaining a steady flow of Merfolk while setting up big plays and backups for the commander ability. It also takes advantage of unblockable mechanics for sneaky damage opportunities.

Key Ideas

  • Big Guys and Endless Merfolk
I wanted to get some bigger creatures while making sure I wouldn’t run out of Merfolk. Realmwalker and Descendants' Path work great here since only about a third of the deck is land, giving you a better chance to hit creatures on top.

  • Making big Guys
The deck’s mana cost is low, so after casting your commander, you can usually follow up with Evolution Sage. Proliferating helps make big Merfolk fast and easy.

  • Unblockable Plays
Islandwalk abd Unblockable is a sneaky way to deal damage, and you’ve got options to search for cards to set this up.

  • Card Draw Between Plays
Merfolk Looter is handy for drawing cards during explores, keeping your hand full and ready to react.

  • Oko, Thief of Crowns
Oko is here to annoy opponents and deal with their big threats. Against decks with sophisticated cards, Oko can handle almost anything—even freezing their commander for a while. Once you find an opening, you can deal serious damage.

This deck is designed to keep the pressure on with Merfolk, explore unblockable strategies, and make the most of your commander’s abilities while always being ready for a big play.

UPDATE: I played two test games with friends, and the deck performed (under luck I guess) nicely — it got strong and built up quickly. In the first game, I won with Islandwalk, and in the second, I delivered 28 damage in a single attack using unblockable. I’ve since added Wonder as a card to send directly to the graveyard when it shows up, cause the deck seems to have hard time against flying and also liking this type of advantage.
