Hey stevezsiga :) I used to run Mist-Cloaked Herald x4 before Benthic Biomancer became a thing, back when this deck was a standard one :) There is a lot I would like to cram in here, but decided to go against the typical Merfolk staples (which I will probably use in Modern mono-blue Merfolks anyway :P) and focus on +1/+1 counter generation and it's benefits. This isn't a deck I would take with me with intention of winning FNM, but it's fun to play and one of first decks I built after coming back to Magic after not playing for 10+ years :D (I stopped back in 7th Edition).

I'd he happy to help! I'd recommend starting with around 10 cards that ramp your mana (Llanowar Elves, Rampant Growth, Arcane Signet, and more), 10 that draw you more cards (Armorcraft Judge, Bred for the Hunt, Benthic Biomancer, Fathom Mage, Inspiring Call, Towashi Guide-Bot, and stuff like that). After that, around 10 more cards should be dedicated to dealing with scary things your opponents play (like Beast Within, Ravenform, Resculpt, You Find a Cursed Idol, Oversimplify, plus others like those), 37ish lands (this one is a little more flexible, just see how many makes it so you're getting enough each game. You can also use the MDFC land/spells from Zendikar Rising, such as Glasspool Mimic  Flip, Tangled Florahedron  Flip, and Vastwood Fortification  Flip.

Once you have all that, the rest can really just be whatever you want. A bunch of cool creatures with strong activated abilities for your commander (I can give some suggestions if you want, but it sounds like you already have some ideas), some ways to untap those creatures with cards like Kiora's Follower, Kelpie Guide, and Clever Conjurer, and some ways to get counters on your creatures like Bow of Nylea, Burst of Strength, Ecologist's Terrarium, Jiang Yanggu, Wildcrafter, Hadana's Climb  Flip, and Ivy Lane Denizen.

I'd say if you're running deeproot elite you might be better of running Benthic Biomancer than Cosi's Trickster. Sure the trickster gets bigger, but with the amount of lords you're running that hardly seems relevant.

HI wallisface! Sorry for my late response. Smuggler's Copter might work, though it isn't a Merfolk so it doesn't synergize particularly well with the deck. The flying is always welcome though, perhaps it has a home in the sideboard.

For now, Benthic Biomancer has been great at filtering hands, so I could definitely see a few backup copies working.

Hello. Looks like you are just getting into the game with an intro deck and want some suggestions on how to upgrade your deck. I will try to give you some upgrades that will hopefully not be outside your budget.

First suggestion for your deck would be to focus on being either a deck that wants to mill or be an aggressive deck. Since the only card you are running that allows you to mill is Jace, Wielder of Mysteries , we should probably consider focusing on the +1/+1 counter theme you have going.

Considering you are running cards that have a relatively high mana cost on average, I would suggest adding some ramp cards. There are three cards I would highly suggest.

Cultivate - Searches for two lands and puts one into play right away making it so you will be able to play a majority of your cards from then on. Suggest adding 4 copies to the deck.

Llanowar Elves - is a great 1 drop creature that will help boost your ability to cast spells.

Nissa, Who Shakes the World - A strong planeswalker that will make your "Forests" tap for extra mana giving you a large boost in your mana generation and allow you to transform your lands into aggressive creatures that use +1/+1 counters. These lands will now also benefit from your proliferate functions. If you create a copy of it with Spark Double then the mana production passive is increased even more. This rare does cost about $6 as of this post and is the most expensive card I will try to recommend. Would suggest 2 copies at least but would say you would be fine adding more for the deck as it can runaway with games by itself sometimes.

To make room for all the suggested cards I would cut both your Jace planeswalkers, Jace's Ruse , Benthic Biomancer , Merfolk Skydiver , and Primal Empathy

I would also suggest trading the Simic Guildgate out for Rimewood Falls if you get decide to pickup Nissa, Who Shakes the World for the deck as they do count as forests. This means that even if you do that them for blue mana, you will still get one green mana when used for mana. You will also be able to search your deck with Nisa's final skill to add them to the battlefield which can be convenient.

Side note - You should mark your deck as casual format instead of standard for the site if you want to make it so your deck list doesn't light up in red as standard is a format for the most recent sets of cards.

Cool! Two comments: First, idk about Merfolk Secretkeeper. You don't need mill and it can't do damage without help. There are other cmc 1 merfolk. Mist-Cloaked Herald to attack before you get islandwalk, Benthic Biomancer, Cursecatcher, Merfolk Spy, etc. Comment two: I think you'll empty your hand quickly. For card draw, consider Curiosity and/or Seafloor Oracle. Also: make a sideboard, maybe with Merfolk Trickster or Triton Tactics

I went for Benthic Biomancer over Cursecatcher because I feel like the Catcher falls off very quickly after T2, while the Biomancer's loot ability let's you dig for value later in the game plus it becomes a slightly bigger body. I will playtest the Catcher again though. The last time I found the (1) tax to not do very much in the recent metagame, espacially when it leaves me with one card down.

I enjoy Glasspool Mimic over Phantasmal Image because I really hate my 4/4 copy (pumped by lords) being bolted for 3 and still die. My area is full of burn and prowess decks. I aggree however, that 3 cmc for only being able to target my own creatures can be a too high cost in the long run.

I really like Merrow Reejerey -> Coralhelm Commander, I will definitely try that in a 2-2 split.

I chose Brazen Borrower over Harbinger of the Tides because
A) I can cast the bounce part for UU at instant speed in my opp. turn and
B) because it's not a Merfolk and thus won't be hit by Plague Engineer
Harbinger seems to be the more aggressive option, so that is up to personal preference imo.

Oboro, Palace in the Clouds is a great suggestion, I kinda forgot about that tbh. Would you goe for 1 or for 2 of them?
