Canadian Highlander Burn Competitive Mono-Red

This is my highlander burn deck. I retrofit this between its origin as a 2023 Canadian Highlander, an infuriating Elder Dragon Highlander Deck with Zo-Zu the Punisher or Starke of Rath or Feldon, Ronom Excavator as commander, and an Oathbreaker Burn with Tibalt, Rakish Instigator and Searing Blaze as oathbreakers. This is one of my favorite decks because it's just fast burn and infuriating taxes. The classic stuff.

Nothing is better than making people angry when they see Zozu the Punisher in the command zone. The only thing I don't like is that it fizzles out after 25 life and loses to decks that run blue or white.

The nature of a burn deck in any CCG format is almost the same; burn your opponents for all their life points before they can kill you and before you can fizzle out. In magic, Burn their creatures to get rid of their blockers. Use cards with a low converted mana cost of 1-2 for the best consistency.

Burn is easily the one of the cheapest decks, and to Highlander decks this is no exception. Games are usually over quickly as you put the heat on the opponents (no pun intended).

Although this started as a Canadian Highlander deck, I modified slightly into Elder Dragon Highlander. I just never liked vintage chaos that much, and with all the combos and strategies Canadian Highlander does, I have more fun accomplishing them in EDH decks. Don't let my opinions sway you if you like it though.

Much like a 60 card burn deck, the deckbuilds will be almost uniform given their identical strategy and win conditions but there are some interesting differences. With no surprise, Lightning Bolt, Lava Spike, and Vexing Devil are included in almost build. Burn and red control creature staples such as Eidolon of the Great Revel, Rakdos Cackler, and Hazoret the Fervent are also included. Falkenwrath Gorger is included in many builds I assume because it is a generic 2/1 with no drawbacks, which seems to be just enough to stomp Canadian Highlander decks.

A significant divergent point of burn decks are cards that have been reprinted with similar effects and all different names. Almost all decks had cards with a two converted mana cost that dealt 3 damage but all different names: incinerate, lightning strike, etc. One drops that have power 2 or prowess are also a guaranteed spot. Choose whatever you can find in your collection/your LGS bulk.

Your ideal allocation of lands is 30-33 with up to nine Canadian highlander points with the usual mana rocks. My personal preference is a minimum of 31 lands in any 100 card deck after playing countless cEDH games because almost any deck still needs two lands by turn two to be functional and I do not like to risk a mulligan. You can replace ordinary mountains with modular Zenzidar lands, Channel Lands, and maxing out your Canadian Highlander Points with busted mana rocks which take the place of their respective lands. Shatterskull Smashing is a usual modal land staple.

As of January 2023, the point values are usually: Price of Progress (1); Mox Ruby (3); Sol Ring (4); Mana Crypt (4); Mana Vault (1). A budget friendly CaH point allocation is Price of Progress (1) and Sol Ring (4).

Your creatures should populate 25-35 cards in the deck, with most decks getting close to 30. This ratio gives a high number of attackers and synergy with noncreature prowess mechanics. In addition, you want to have more creatures to attack more often to hold up the long game. Instant and sorceries should focus on one drops that buff up your creatures and a generic array of {1}{R} Deal 3 damage to any target.

The sideboard in this deck incorporates good cards that support a burn strategy but are not included in each build. Although I know Canadian Highlanders does not use a sideboard, there was no other place to put these cards. Most of these cards are creature cards that work well after burning all opponent’s monsters and stax pieces. Some of these are playgroup specific picks such as Blood Moon. Other cards are cards like Najeela; good in a vintage burn strategy but nothing that warrants being put in every vintage burn deck. These cards are good but not consistent enough or can be replaced with a similar card.

Choice Creature Picks:
