calderstrake, 11 years ago

Another major overhaul of the under-performers inspired by a thorough deck analysis of the two deck lists in the description.

AEtherling feature for Deep Blue

captainkittykat, 11 years ago

I would also would like some thoughts for side board as well :) this deck will be playing in a PTQ and any feedback will be amazing

MuzzleMuffin, 11 years ago

The deck seems solid as of right now. I am having a tough time debating between 18 or 19 lands. I feel that 18 gets a little tricky with the 2 Cryptic Command s in the deck. I am hoping to possibly trade a few things for a Vendillion Clique, but as of right now I am still playing a more budget build and choosing not to run Clique or the Fetches.

Any recommendations?

Swapping

MagicHands88, 11 years ago

Swapped out Cloudfin Raptor for Nivmagus Elemental in the mainboard. I lose flying, but gain everything else. Gotta love some stack abuse.

Mass sidebaord removal

Added Damnation over Killing Wave because it's a better card >.>;

Added Fulminator Mage over Ghost Quarter

[[rapid hybridization]]

Spootyone, 11 years ago

I've added Rapid Hybridization for testing purposes. While my creatures aren't particularly fond of fighting against 3/3s, they typically can at least trade. And turning a Master of Wavesfoil offline or a Stormbreath Dragon into a blockable token is a much better upgrade from my perspective. It also gives me a way to deal with Obzedat, Ghost Council, Blood Baron of Vizkopa, Agent of the Fates, and more.

Now we add in the numerous bounce-effects I have in the deck and you have some really nice synergy. The last part of relevancy here? I can (in a pinch) turn my mana dorks into 3/3's to push through damage and/or to evolve my Shambleshark a first or second time. Hooray!

Journey into Nyx — THEROS 3/3

It's the last round for Theros and Thelon the Blightlord is pleased.
Maybe next block brings greener pastures for the mushroom-folk.

  • Temple of Malady - Forgotten temple of blight and pestilence. Most likely too expensive for the budget but we'll see.

Jund's thallids tried to disguise their deliciousness by covering
themselves in spines harvested from the tukatongue tree.

Changes No. 1

Gorky, 11 years ago

I replaced 4x Mountain and 4x Blade of the Bloodchief with 4x Smoldering Spires and 4x Vampiric Fury.

Vampiric Fury fits pretty nice in there where Blade of the Bloodchief wasn't doing quite much.

Smoldering Spires is also kinda nice for forcing your enemy a little bit.

Hold on tight!

Journey into Nyx — THEROS 3/3

Yet again Theros succeeds on bringing in all those huge sea monsters and horrors of the abyss.

Thassa felt no need to punish the sailors for their folly in crossing the straits.
The kraken would do it for her.

Venue agora hobby Went 1-2 R1 monoblack 2-0 Blood baron did most of the work, with thoughtseize n removals doing d hardwork. Oppoment was flying in with nightveil but it landed an elspeth, hero downfalls n lands. R2 BR Rakdos Return deck 0-2 Opponent was a "no-nonsense" "iamanaggroplayerandshallnotcarewatyousay" kinda player. Managed to survived 4 rakdos returns but could not handle his guttersnipe and burn spells. Was land flooded Next game was bad as I made the mistake that hes a monoblack splash red. He isnt. Hence I badly removed 4bloodbarons n 2 lifebane n 2 scavenging ooze for +2 golgari charm +1 blind obedience +1 pithing needle +1 vraska +1 merciless eviction +2 bile blight.. Big mistake. R3 mono green devotion 1-2 Was out rushed by creatures n scavenging ooze G2 won with merciless eviction G3 lost with tons of land in play.. Merciless Eviction seems powerful esp with jou coming out. Shall rework n post a newer list soon:)

TNM Standard

LarryLiu, 11 years ago

Won 3-0 R1 GR Monster 2-1 R2 Maze's End 2-0 R3 Golgari Dreadge Players were relatively newer hence this was a lucky win.

13spades, 11 years ago

Took out Ravenous Demon  Flip, and three Orzhov Guildgate. Added another Runechanter's Pike, two Obzedat, Ghost Council, and a fourth Beckon Apparition. Replaced three gates with Scry lands. Planning on taking out Thraben Doomsayer and replacing him with Day of Judgment.

Changed this deck quite a bit!

Pseudolife, 11 years ago

The core of the deck is the same, but I removed the "hopeful" Utvara Hellkite combo that never EVER lands.

Altar's Reap works great with Underworld Cereberus, and in my meta there is a LOT of esper control. So reaping two hasters for next turn in response to Hero's Downfall just rocks people's faces off.

I added devour flesh because I lose to selenya hexproof.

3-1 Standard Tourney

Mn3m0n1c, 11 years ago

Thankfully I did not 2-2 again, but it was not a 4-0.. SHOULD'VE BEEN. Either way, I lost to a friend and it was a great time.

Round 1: 2-1 Mono Blue Devotion

Game 1: Lost the dice roll, on turn. He game out the gates fast, as does any Mono blue. Raptors, Familiars and Weirds, Oh my! I Played a Scavenging Ooze into 4 mana after Domri Rade the previous turn. Fought his Judge's Familiar, Flesh / Blood his 1/2 Cloudfin Raptor. Established board control, and started drawing threats with Domri Rade. By the time he Voyage's Ended my ooze (weird I know), I had enough threats on deck to win.

Game 2: Turn again, in came the Mistcutter Hydras, and removal. Decided to not bring in Golgari Charm because i thought I had enough removal for Master of Wavesfoil, it cant target Thassa, God of the Sea and what are the odds he draws his 1 or 2 of Bident of Thassa Well turn four he brought that sucker out with 3 fliers. Man did that burn. So I addressed what I could, established control. I actually got into position to win with an 8/8 ooze and a 4/4 Mistcutter Hydra with Domri Rade and a Ghor-Clan Rampager to trample my ooze in to victory. I attacked, and the SOB had another Voyage's End. bye bye ooze, 2 for 1'd my rampager. Lost the following turn to unblockables via Thassa, God of the Sea.

Game 3: On play!! This game I was in the driver's seat, same board.. but added the Golgari Charms.. at least they were a Master of Wavesfoil answer in addition to that damn Bident of Thassa. Quickly established control, even with my Stormbreath Dragon tapped down to a Tidebinder Mage, I worked him down fast with a 6/6 Mistcutter Hydra, Domri Rade value fightin left right and center. He was down to 12, and played a Master of Wavesfoil into 6 or 7 devotion.. I saw his smirk thinking it was GG since i was at 12 with 2 creatures on board. I went to combat, swung with the 6/6 Mistcutter Hydra, dropping him to 6. I merely dropped a Flesh / Blood 2nd main for a lethal 6 with him tapped out and won. He started blabbering, oh well next turn you were dead to wave tokens. etc.. I showed him the Golgari Charm in my hand for the next turn upset if I somehow couldnt win. his fate was sealed.

-

Round 2: 1-2 R/W Burn. gddamnit I hate this deck.

Game 1: Lost the dice roll, on turn. Burn central, had a Scavenging Ooze and a Courser of Kruphix, gained life and he ran out of cards. he conceded after having no cards, and facing down an 8/8 Polukranos, World Eater. though, yay. I won the first game on the turn.. this match is as good as mine!!

Game 2: Turn again, sided in the third ooze, ditched the Elvish Mystics for Searing Blood and Satyr Firedancer, got Sire Of Insanityx2, some Doom Blade for potential Spark Trooper and just to get a Phoenix/Mutavault at the right time. anyway, his hand just seemed endless, burn after burn.. literally double Searing Blood after blocking my Polukranos, World Eater with his Satyr Firedancer to kill my hydra and deal 6 to me. He Magma Jet me and laughed... little did I know, he scryed two Boros Charmfoils. In reality I lost this game because I failed to play correctly with my Scavenging Ooze. I shouldve ate his Chandra's Phoenix my turn or upkeep. I let him untap. realized immediately what I had done wrong. At the end of his turn I ate his Chandra's Phoenix. He hit ooze with a burn in response. I was very upset about that misplay.

Game 3: On play, Same deal. He had all the answers. Just when I had him ready to kill. Stormbreath Dragon & Polukranos, World Eater 7/7 with a Ghor-Clan Rampager in the graveyard + 7 mana for a full Flesh / Blood. I swung in, he chumped the hydra.. so I monstered my dragon for hand damage + 7 flying. Since neither was lethal with Flesh / Blood or monster, I took the more damage + safe attacked next turn win. Well he Warleader's Helix'd in response and won on the following turn. I showed him the Flesh / Blood and I just couldnt use it effectively.

-

Round 3: 2-0 U/W Control

Game 1: Lost the dice roll, on turn (what else is new). Turn 2 Domri Rade, got the D. sphere. early Stormbreath Dragon for a Supreme Verdict. after consistent beating, a Polukranos, World Eater with Ghor-Clan Rampager pump for Flesh / Blood was lethal.

Game 2: Turn again, He battled all the way up and eventually tapped out for elspeth. I had a Ghor-Clan Rampager hardcasted. He put out 3 tokens for 5 devotion thinking he was safe. I dropped a Stormbreath Dragon, swung with both at Elspeth, Sun's Champion and took her out with trample damage. He couldnt catch up, and I took an easy second win.

-

Round 4: 2-1 R/W buuuurn. fuuuuuuuu

Game 1: WON THE ROLL! played, and lost savagely. what an upset. burn burn burn, firedancer value.

Game 2: Won with two Scavenging Oozes and a Courser of Kruphix, Polukranos, World Eater did the work.

Game 3: On turn was a great out the gates start after a mull to 6. 5 mana available turn 3. back and forth beating. It came down to me at 2 hp, my lethal on board. he had no cards in hand due to a Rakdos's Return. All he had was Satyr Firedancer, any single burn was a win. he drew a mountain. got me to 1 and I could not have untapped faster. won and put me to a 3-1.

-

Recap

Although R/W burn is an extremely tough match up, it can be done.. just really really hard. I may adjust for the 4th Courser of Kruphix again, but the Scavenging Oozes just do work here.

Reaper of the Wilds was very useless that night, but it is there for any black removal deck like orzhov or mono black.

Debating on replacing the Courser of Kruphixs with Fanatic of Xenagos, courser is always removed or prevented on lifegain and is a large dud late game. Fanatic can be some much needed tempo and a pretty cheap costing 4/4

After this tournament, I removed Sire Of Insanity from main board, and added a fourth Ghor-Clan Rampager for some additional Flesh / Blood synergy and more trample shenanigans.
