Additions/Subtractions

Thanks for the help everyone. Great suggestions for new cards as well. Its ok MindAblaze please feel free to add more cards to the mix, just try for every card you suggest to put in, try to suggest 2 to take out lol. I always have this problem with mono-black, so many damn cards i want to use.

The cards i agreed with taking out and did so far are: Mutilate, Blistergrub, Temporal Extortion, Demonlord of Ashmouth, Puppet Strings, Black Sun's Zenith, Call to the Grave, Ob Nixilis, Unshackled

The cards i took out, but were wary about taking them out are: Phyrexian Rager, Skullclamp, Dark Prophecy,Blood Artist, Sign in Blood...

Those 4 cards are drawing power, and i always feel like i can't have enough draw power in an EDH deck.

I have added: Butcher of Malakir, Zombie Master, Lord of the Undead, Eldrazi Monument, In Garruk's Wake, Thousand-Year Elixir, and Skullclamp is back in.

Modern Event and Deck Changes

soullessredafro, 11 years ago

This past Saturday I played in a modern event with this deck. It was the first time for this deck to be played in an event. There were three rounds. I ended up 1-2. The first deck I played was an all or nothing R/W burn deck. IMO, the bane of my deck. With all of the burn spells being thrown at my face plus the life loss some of my spells have, my life total went away way too fast. That round went 1-2. The second round I played against a mono black discard deck using Waste Not and Shrieking Affliction. The guy used a lot of discard spells and I wasn't able to keep up. That round also went 1-2. The last round I played against a mono green elf deck that tried to get early mana excel to play Craterhoof and trample through. It also had a play set of Revenge of the Hunted. In this match up, my opponent wasn't able to stabilize due I the fact I was removing everything on his field. This round I went 2-0.

After some challenging matches, I decided I change things up a bit. I found that my lack of winning was because my creatures were not infecting fast enough. So I thought to myself "what kind of creature buffs are there in black?" After some research, I came up empty handed. Just then, I had a great idea. Mutagenic Growth! So what if I don't play green. What's more Phyrexian than paying life to play a spell? And what a great spell to buff my creatures. I would gladly pay 2 life to give a creature +2/+2! Especially if it's going to win me the game. Then a fellow TO Deckling suggested Cathedral of War. To that I said hell yes! I have a low creature count and I'm usually only attacking with one at a time. Perfect land for this deck. It makes my Inkmoths 2/2 which allows me to use Funeral Charm to buff. Otherwise Charm would just kill an Inkmoth. I only play one because it's slow and only taps for colourless.

Nissa, yo

tehswede77, 11 years ago

Out:

1 Greater Good

In:

1 Nissa, Worldwaker

Notes:

Ripped a Nissa from a prize pack from a sealed event my friends and I played together and I knew it had to go in here immediately. I cut Greater Good because I've never actually wanted to sac a creature to it....like, ever. I'd rather attack with them. And now I can finally try it out in Karador.

Found that I would always Partial away Woodfall Primus in my opening hand, so I replaced it with Reclamation Sage since it gets rid of early Sol Ring, good enchantment things, and mana rocks

Replaced Fathom Mage with Wall of Blossoms since I don't actually run that many big things to trigger evolve past 2 or 3 and a cheap chump blocker that cantrips on its own seems acceptable.

Foiling Progress: 63%

Minor tweaks

afishy, 11 years ago

Wurmcoil Engine -> Steel Hellkite. Offers much needed board control. Worried about not having enough ways to deal with threats that I'm not able to counter, so All is Dust, Evacuation, or Aetherspouts might end up making the list.

Island -> Snow-Covered Island. Makes Extraplanar Lens a bit safer against other blue players.

Think Twice -> Foresee. Nets the same card draw, but with powerful manipulation to boot.

Also,

Not sure what I'm cutting yet for the last 2.

Removed 2x Birds of Paradisefoil for 2x Gladecover Scout, and added 2x Gladecover Scout to sideboard. They've proved very useful against decks with fast removal.

After a little thinking, this change will be made once I get the card.

-1 Skinrender +1 Liliana Vess

The role Skinrender plays in the deck is (kinda) already done by Fume Spitter. Liliana Vess is a good tutor and easy to find with the reprint in M15.

EDIT: These changes have been made. Also:

-1 Archon of Justice +1 Lightning Greaves

When I added Archon of Justice to the deck, I thought the effect triggered when entering the field but recently re-read the effect and I don't think it's as good. Picked up a Lightning Greaves today and figured it would be good to give new creatures haste and shroud. It's just a good EDH card.

Sentimental Pet Cards

tehswede77, 11 years ago

Out:

1 Tolaria West

1 Land Tax

1 Terminus

In:

1 Magister of Worth

1 Ob Nixilis, Unshackled

1 Strip Mine

Notes:

I needed a few cards for another deck I'm putting together and I'd just recently won a Conspiracy Draft with a foil Magister of Worth, so I definitely wanted to make room for that somewhere for sentimental reasons. It's got an EtB effect so this is a great home for it. Opened Ob Nixilis, Unshackled at a sealed event for my bud's Bachelor Party, so that goes in as well.

I've done a little playing around, and found some things that work as well as some things that don't.

Cards that underperform:

-- Panglacial Wurm... It seems great, what with the huge body and the ability to pull it out almost at will, but in practice it's turned out to be pretty much superfluous. By the time I can pull it out, I have enough tutor to get other things I want more; a big body just isn't enough to get by in this deck.

--Ferropede... Either Yisan gets big enough that I have the mana, card draw, and tutor to do anything I want without him, or he doesn't get big enough to make use of Ferropede. It seems like the ability to finesse counters would be nice, but it's usually unecessary.

--Lotus Cobra... It has a place in many decks, but not really this one. I need land to fuel protection, and dorks that tap can be combo'd with, but I have few ways to really take advantage of land drops. In the situations where I might see some synergy (temp, scapeshift, or collective voyage), I either already have enough mana, or don't have much interesting to do with it.

Upgrades:

--Chord of Calling for Green Sun's Zenith... The extra mana cost isn't a problem, and the instant speed is amazing

--Wirewood Lodge for Forest... Can't believe I didn't notice it before

Adding In:

--Yeva, Nature's Herald... Putting this back in, should make other peoples turns more interesting

--Gurzigost... I could use another way of cycling stuff back from my graveyard, and once it's in my deck, it's often as good as in my hand. The deal damage directly bit is gravy, and the body is decent.

--Patron of the Orochi... Do I really need another untap effect? Probably not. It's worth seeing how this acts in the deck though.

Cards I'm thinking about:

Umbral Mantle, Quest for Renewal, Rings of Brighthearth

On a side note, I have no idea how I missed that Illusionist's Bracers form an infinite mana combo with Seeker of Skybreak and the Acolyte or any of the dorks (also Mossbridge Troll gets infinitely big as well)... Umbral Mantle and Rings of Brighthearth would both do that with the Acolyte and Seeker of Skybreak as well.

This does leave the 7 drop slot looking a little threadbare... I'll have to see what I'm missing in that range

Off for more playtesting

Update 1.1

MetaphysicalxProdigy, 11 years ago

Thinking of making this a bant splash, for access to cards like qasili pridemage, Rafiq of the Many, Rancor and others. Any suggestions?

One possible avenue it could take is that of a D+T/hatebear list, taxing opponents with Thalia and Leonin Arbiter, destroying enemy lands with Ghost Quarter + tectonic edge, and using Aether Vial to continue creature pressure. Obviously it will be minus Flickerwisp shenanigans, but you have two wincons through knight tribal and exalted.

Robursu4u, 11 years ago

Took some tips from you guys and some friends. Added a couple card draw abilities, blood moon, eldrazi monument and a few others. So far it's pretty agressive, if the opponent(s) don't take out Krenko in the first couple of turns he's summoned, its basically over.
